The End of the Throw Away Appliance

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

I went to press the start button on the dishwasher. Nothing happened. There was no sound, there were no lights. Nothing. It didnt start. I convinced my daughter to help me take out all the dishes and wash them by hand. It really didnt take too long, but I still love having a dishwasher.

When I had time, I started trying to troubleshoot and figure out the problem. The first step is always to turn off the power and turn it back on. You never know, that might fix it but not in this case. After a couple more tests, it seemed clear that the washer was indeed getting power. I had narrowed the problem down to either the control board (the computer for the dishwasher) or the front control panel.

Here is the real problem. I wasnt exactly sure which part was broken. The control panel costs about $100 and the control board has a price around $120. On a gamble, I could order the control panel (pretty sure thats where the problem was), but what if Im wrong? I could possibly return the piece but the whole process could take a significant amount of time.

Are there other options? Yes, there are two things to consider. First, I could call the repairman. These guys charge about $150 to come out and then you would have to pay for the part on top of that. No, thats not a good option. Could I just buy a new washer? Yes, a new washer would cost between $250-$300.

Now you can see why we are in the age of the throw away appliance. Why would you repair an appliance if it is just a little bit more to buy a new one? Even if I did spend $100 to fix my washer, who knows something else might break next week. In too many cases its just simpler to buy a new thing than to repair. I think this sucks.

What ever happened to Luis and Marias Fix It Shop on Sesame Street? You just dont see places like this anymore. Its not a good business plan since people just buy new appliances when they break. I miss Luis and Maria.

Maybe the companies that make appliances dont really mind that you have a throw-away dish washer. Maybe they are even happy that you have to buy a new one. However, I think the future is near. In this future you will once again be able to repair your appliance. Why? Ill give you three reasons.

Youtube. Even though we have devices that arent so easy to figure out, we have help (by we I mean people that want to repair their own stuff). Lets go back to my dishwasher. If I do a quick search, I can find several videos showing exactly how to fix it like this one. How awesome is that? And if you cant find it in a video, you can probably find your answer in some DIY appliance forum. This is what makes the internet so great.

Arduino. The Arduino is an inexpensive and open source processor. Think of it as a tiny programmable chip, thats essentially what it is. You can build all sorts of awesome stuff and it isnt even that complicated. I have a group of kids that meet each week to work on building simple things.

But could you replace the control board in your dishwasher with Arduino? Yup. In fact, someone already did. So, the Arduino can solve the problem of replacing an expensive control board. What if manufacturers just used Arduino to begin with? It might be cheaper for them to create and it would be easier for you to fix. Also, just imagine all the cool upgrades you could add to your Arduino-based appliance.

Construction in expansion for 5th month

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Growth in construction activity has slowed, as the strength in the housing market is offset by weakness in engineering construction.

The Australian Industry Group/Housing Industry Association Performance of Construction Index fell 5.7 points to 53.4 points in October.

But, it was the fifth straight month the index has stayed above the 50 level that separates expansion from contraction.

Ai Group director of public policy Peter Burn said the data reflect the changing nature of the Australian economy, away from one that was driven by mining investment.

"Residential and commercial construction continued to lead the rebalancing of the economy away from the emphasis on mining investment that has been such a feature of domestic economic activity in recent years," he said.

"With official data showing housing loan approvals flat, construction businesses appear to have wound back the exuberance of recent months with only a marginal lift in employment levels in October."

Housing Industry Association chief economist Harley Dale said the housing sector was consolidating after stellar growth earlier in 2014.

"The activity and new orders indices for both detached houses and apartments are consistent with the maintenance of elevated levels of residential building approvals, rather than further growth," he said.

Of the four construction sub-sectors, engineering was the only one to record a fall in activity in the month.

House and apartment building were robust and growth in commercial building activity moderated.

Amazon Wants to Enter Your Homes and Hearts With This Super-Cheesy Infomercial

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

'Alexa, do we really need a voice-activated speaker that listens for our every command?"

Amazon is trying to earn a spot on our bookshelves, countertops and coffee tables with Echo, a wireless device that's ready to stream music and answer the types of questions you could easily ask Windows' Cortana or Apple's Siri. UPDATE: Echo only listens for commands when prompted by a word set up by the user. The family in the video went with "Alexa."

Judging from the online infomercial, the device is perfect for any family that's just stepped out of a 1980s sitcom. ("Alexa, what's the definition of annoying? Example, brother.") Alexa is like the new Small Wonderyou remember, that show about a girl robot, V.I.C.I., who is just part of the family.

Amazon gadgets can be hit or miss with consumerstheFire phone cost the company $170 million last quarter. Still, Amazon is trying to place devices in consumers' hands that make it easy to order products from the Web. And it's trying to send those goods faster with far-out concepts such as drone deliveries.

It also wants to sell as many digital books, movies and shows as it can. Echo is just another step toward total shopping control, a commercial outpost for Amazon embedded in the homes of its most loyal customers.

Echostarts at $199, a pretty steep price for a glorified speaker. Have a look:

Mike Kledzik: He loved teaching people about wine

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mike Kledzik had a penchant for fine wines, having spent more than three-quarters of his life working in the wine and spirits industry.

"He knew everything about wine and loved teaching people about it," said Bonnie Brown Kledzik, his wife of 16 years, adding he couldn't get through a gathering of friends or families without someone asking him questions about wine. "They would want to know which were the best wines and the difference between the first and second crushing."

As a senior member of the sales team for PRP Wine International, which sells wines from boutique vineyards, he could explain that and more.

The Tavares resident was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer a year ago. He died Oct. 30 at 71.

Born in Melvindale, Mich., Kledzik moved with his family to the Orlando area when he was 7. A year later his father died. His mother singlehandedly raised him and his nine siblings. In 1960, he graduated from Bishop Moore High School and later served three years in the Air Force.

Mike and Bonnie met at a singles dance at a Methodist church in downtown Orlando and dated for three years before they married. Although they had their own successful careers, they enjoyed their time together doing things they liked such as travelling especially cruises to Europe, where Mike hosted wine-tasting lectures.

    He enjoyed being around others.

"He loved life and his life was meeting people," said his sister Georgia Bender, 78, of Altamonte Springs. "Once you met him, you felt like you had always known him.Mike was a part of so many people's life, if you had a problem he wanted to know about it and see if he could fix it."

He was active in the community and volunteered during fundraisers for Cornerstone Hospice, St. Paul Catholic Church in Leesburg and served as auctioneer numerous times for Mission Inn Resort & Club's annual Florida Junior Golf Auction.

"He also was a generous soul," said his 68-year-old wife, a retired interior decorator.

Take a look at the future of Tampa International Airport

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TAMPA When Joe Lopano talks about what Tampa International Airport will look like in the future, he sounds more like a real estate developer than the airport's CEO.

Other times, he sounds like he's planning a romantic evening.

"You have a little something to eat, maybe a glass of wine," Lopano said Thursday. "You watch the sunset. Then you go to the airside and get on your plane.

    "It will be completely awesome."

The airport's CEO was showing off renderings of what TIA will look like when the airport's $943 million expansion and renovation project is completed in 2017. Airport officials said the new renderings are very close to what the finished product will look like.

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, which oversees the airport, on Thursday also approved more than $330 million in contracts a third of the project's total price.

"It's a big, audacious plan," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn, who sits on the aviation board. "It's expensive, but in the long term I think it's the right decision. I think it will allow Tampa International Airport to prosper and grow for decades to come."

The new renderings showed that glass and steel will be added to the concrete exterior that has dominated the airport's architecture since the main terminal opened in 1971.

Skanska USA was awarded the second phase of a contract to gut, expand and renovate the main terminal, adding 55,000 square-feet. That contract was worth $32 million. Construction is set to start this month and run through November 2017. The airport is also taking bids to replace all of its eating, drinking and shopping options by 2017.

Lopano was particularly enamored with the big new outdoor terraces that will be added on the east and west sides of the third-floor transfer level of the expanded terminal. Airport patrons will be able to sit outside and grab a bite while watching the sunset on the new west terrace or stargaze with a glass of wine on the east side.
