Under blue skies, Beijing rolls out a red carpet for Obama and Putin

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Beijing Welcome to fairytale Beijing.

The sky is blue, the air is clean, the traffic flows. And all because China is hosting the likes of Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin at a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, Asias premier trade forum.

President Xi Jinping, chairing a major international meeting for the first time, has spared no effort to impress his guests, including draconian steps to temporarily curb the capitals notorious pollution.

The campaign goes well beyond Chinas long tradition of hospitality. Never has so much time, energy, money, and propaganda been expended on an APEC summit, says Zhang Yunling, a former trade policy adviser to the Chinese government.

Nor is it wasted, in the eyes of the authorities. They are using this meeting to build Chinas image as the leader of Asia, says Zhang Lifan, a historian and independent commentator. This is an opportunity to present their status.

Most APEC host nations organize the annual meetings in existing hotels and conference facilities. China has reportedly spent $6 billion on a purpose-built lakeside campus 40 miles outside Beijing and a new elevated expressway leading to the 595-room hotel, conference hall, and press center.

The government has chased away air pollution in equally dramatic fashion. Only half of Beijings cars will be allowed on the roads each day between Nov. 3and Nov. 12; more than 1,000 heavy industrial plants within a 120-mile radius of Beijing have been ordered to close; all construction sites have been suspended; and residents of Tianjin, a port city 90 miles east of Beijing, will not get any central heating until APEC is over.

All of Beijings schools and universities have been shut down for the week of the APEC summit, and all government employees have been given a mini-holiday, so as to reduce congestion in the capital. But that means no passports will be issued, no weddings registered, no taxes paid, in fact no official business done at all. And the partial car ban means that public transport is even more packed than normal.

The police and other security forces, though, are working overtime. Fearing a possible terrorist attack by separatists from the predominantly Muslim province of Xinjiang, the government has stepped up roadblocks and security checks around the capital.

Trying to ensure a trouble-free event in the most pleasant circumstances possible is natural enough in any host government. And the tradition of caring about face, wanting to show our best side, is part of Chinese culture, says Zhang Lifan.

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SALINE--We are pleased to announce that our indoor tennis facility is in the final stages of its State-of-the-Art renovation. In celebration of its completion, we are hosting a special Open House. We would like to invite the public, TPCC members, and all tennis enthusiasts to attend this event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday,Nov. 6. The Saline Area Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

After two months of dedicated efforts, the facility has received a complete facelift inside and out. Michigan-based businesses were used during the renovation process. The lighting was designed and made in Michigan by Shelby-based Zon LED, and supplied by Ann Arbors McNaughton-McKay. The newly installed Re-Verber-Ray infra-red heaters are manufactured by Detroit Radiant Products and supplied by Johnstone Supply in Ann Arbor. Willis Building Company, Inc. in Saline completed the installation of the roof, insulation and also provided a fresh coat of paint.

Enhancements to the facility include: new lighting, heating, roof, insulation, ventilation, painting, resurfacing of the courts, new backdrops, divider curtains, nets and new furnishings for the Tennis Shop.

In addition to the company's goal of investing in companies to promote the local economy, a conscious effort was also made to be environmentally friendly. The club recycled all previous heaters, light fixtures and fluorescent tubes replaced during the renovation.

Our new lights, in particular, will provide more and better than we had with our previous lights, which used 520 fluorescent tubes, and will also reduce our energy consumption by about 70 percent, said Guy Guarino, general manager. "DTE Energys credits on these lights and our heaters help make this not only good for our planet, but also for our budgets.

Appetizers and refreshments will be available at the open house.

Travis Pointe Country Club is a member-owned private country club 15 minutes from downtown Ann Arbor and five minutes from downtown Saline. Club amenities -- including an 18- hole golf course with putting greens and practice ranges, indoor and outdoor tennis, indoor and outdoor pools, 24/7 fitness center, racquetball court and three separate dining areas create an inviting, family-friendly atmosphere blending comfortable traditions with dynamic programs and contemporary facilities.

As the head of the National Architecture Awards jury Paul Berkemeier spent two "intense" but "fun" weeks travelling across Australia visiting about 60 sites in contention for a gong from the Australian Institute of Architects.

But when he walked into Hotel Hotel's lobby-cum-bar-cum-restaurant, he was bowled over.

    "It's really memorable," he said.

"It just has such a strong, quirky sense to it, both the architecture but also the social aspect really works."

The "exciting and original design" of the hotel's lobby scored its designers, north Melbourne firm March Studio, a national award for interior architecture one of three handed out by the institute.

The Australian Institute of Architects' 2014 National Architecture Awards were announced on Thursday night in Darwin.

Across Australia, 43 awards and commendations were given to 36 projects, but Hotel Hotel was the only ACT winner.

Mr Berkemeier said the "playful" way timber and concrete was assembled in the hotel "sings".

Architects For Sheldon Hall Renewal Win Award

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

OSWEGO Architects working with SUNY Oswego on the 2011-13 exterior renewal of century-old Sheldon Hall recently earned a top design award for historic preservation from the American Institute of Architects New York State.

Architects from WASA/Studio A in New York City recently earned the American Institute of Architects New York State Award of Excellence in Adaptive Reuse/Historic Preservation for work on Sheldon Halls exterior renewal. Now poised for its next century, the colleges Old Main gleams in this April 2013 photo by SUNY Oswego photographer Jim Russell.

WASA/Studio A of New York City working closely with the colleges Facilities Design and Construction office as well as State University Construction Fund representatives won AIA New Yorks Award of Excellence in Adaptive Reuse/Historic Preservation.

The award was presented in October at the professional organizations annual Design Conference in Saratoga Springs.

The Sheldon Hall exterior renewal project put the colleges Old Main, which opened in 1913, on course for its next 100 years.

The building remained fully occupied as contractors restored the cupola and replaced its four long-missing clocks, updated lighting with a new LED and linear-halide system, rebuilt the parapets, replaced the granite steps and the iconic columns, put down a new copper roof, added fleece-reinforced waterproofing for gutters, replicated hundreds of terra cotta replacement moldings, repointed the brickwork and replaced damaged bricks, installed special-order historic replicas of the windows and much more.

It is wonderful to have Sheldon Hall, which is so intertwined with the colleges identity, finally and fully restored, President Deborah F. Stanley said in the summer 2013 edition of Oswego, the colleges alumni magazine.

The AIAs award letter to WASA/Studio A noted that architects from California, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, D.C., served on the jury for the 2014 New York Design Awards.

Volunteers Work To Repair Veteran's Home

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A cold rain did not put a damper on plans to complete a restoration project that is bringing hope to a south side couple dealing with medical concerns.

More than 40 volunteers from Fifth Third Band and Rebuilding Together Central Ohio began making essential repairs at the home of Teri and Scott Chesonis.

Teri lost her right leg in January after complications of diabetes. Scott is a disabled veteran who is losing his vision.

"They're making things a lot better for my wife to be able to function as a human being again, instead of having to depend upon everything to do things for her. She's going to be able to do a lot more things by herself," Scott said.

"We showed up first thing this morning. Everybody was very motivated and had a smile on their face. They've been working with a lot of energy all day," said Alex Sutliff, of Rebuilding Together Central Ohio. "We're going to be making some changes so that Teri has better access to the bathroom, for example, by putting a roll-in shower that she can access with her wheelchair."

On a chilly, blustery day, volunteers cleaned up their yard, made exterior repairs, spackled, primed, and painted, inside and out.

"We're doing a combination of painting. We're doing some beautification projects, and we're just really excited in helping someone who did so much to help us for this country," said Stephanie Steward, a Fifth Third Bank volunteer.

"They're wonderful. It makes me very grateful. They're taking time from their lives to make my life better," Teri said.

There is still much work to be done, but that has not deterred the spirit of the volunteers, and has left a deep impression on Teri and Scott.

Theorganization has working projects in 14 cities across the nation, investing $190,000, helping residents in need with an army of 400 volunteers. Fifth Third Bank contributed $10,000 locally toward the project, whichis expected to be completed next week.
