No End in Sight for Somali Political Bickering

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    NAIROBI, KENYA

Somalia's political leaders are at loggerheads once again over the reorganization of the cabinet, prompting a warning from the United Nations to focus on building credible institutions to move the country forward. Analysts say the next year will be crucial for solidifying Somalias recent gains after decades of lawlessness.

The controversy began Monday, when U.N. envoy to Somalia, Nicholas Kay, said he was concerned about allegations that lawmakers were being bribed in exchange for votes to oust the prime minister.

In a statement, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud acknowledged the U.N.'s concern, but called for the international community to respect Somalia's right to determine its own future, and allow Somali leaders to resolve their differences.

    Political fault lines

The political bickering between the president and Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed began two weeks ago after the premier made a cabinet reshuffle. Among those affected was the presidents close ally and Minister of Livestock and Husbandry Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir.

The president termed the changes null and void, setting off an increasingly public dispute between the two leaders and their supporters in the parliament.

This is the kind of division that has plagued Somali politics for years. But Somali lawmaker and former constitution minister Abdirahman Hosh said it is good for Somali leaders to negotiate, calling it part of the democratic process. He added that ultimately, the politicians must settle their disputes.

"Top leaders' political wrangling is good thing for us. Leaders who agree on everything is not good for the country. The politics itself is about people with different views coming together, but when there is a division, then a solution has to be found to solve the differences," said Hosh.

Vinyl siding is a lightweight, energy-efficient, and economical siding solution. Another attractive feature of vinyl siding is the fact that it can be installed over existing wood siding. This can save time and money during the installation process. Installing vinyl siding over an existing siding product involves first fastening rigid foam to the house. This will aid with insulation, but the primary reason for the foam is to create a firm base for the new siding to be fastened onto.

First Baptist Church of Ardmore conversion, other developments moving ahead

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Cheryl Allison callison@mainlinemedianews.com

In the past week, the townships historical commission and planning commission have both voted to recommend approval of Main Line reBuilds plans for the Gothic Revival structure and its parsonage at 120 E. Athens Ave.

In other action this week, the planning commission also recommended approval of preliminary plans of land development for projects that will bring significant change to two locations in Bryn Mawr. One is a new residential development on Old Lancaster Road near Bryn Mawr Hospital and the other a commercial development on the former Verizon Lot on Lancaster Avenue that would fill a longstanding gap in the business district.

    First Baptist Church of Ardmore

Falling vacant as its congregation could no longer support it nearly three years ago, the First Baptist Church of Ardmore was one of the prime movers for a church conversion ordinance in Lower Merion.

When a developer-buyer sold the 1-acre parcel to Main Line reBuilds partners Mac Brand, Scott Brehman and Tom Harvey this summer, it came into the hands of a group already dedicated to adapting these community landmarks. Other current projects include the United Methodist Church of Narberth and Odd Fellows Hall and Gladwyne Methodist Church in Gladwyne Village.

Following Lower Merions new conditional use process, the partners have agreed to list the church property as a Class 2 historic resource on the townships inventory. A public hearing on action to make its protected status formal is scheduled for the Nov. 19 meeting of the board of commissioners.

Also in connection with the project, a conditional use hearing is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. before the townships Hearing Officer. A preliminary plan of land development for a four-unit conversion of the church building, retaining the parsonage as a fifth condominium unit, will be before commissioners in December.

At a meeting in September, the historical commission had endorsed in concept the residential conversion. Following up at a meeting Oct. 27, members reviewed in detail architectural changes Main Line reBuild has proposed to make the building suitable for residential use. Key changes include converting the basement into a garage with eight parking spaces, adding a driveway from St. Pauls Road to access the garage, and adding a front porch and rear two-car garage to the parsonage. For a specific potential buyer, the plan also includes installation of an ADA-accessible ramp on the St. Pauls Road side of the church.

Primary sources of interest for the commission were proposed replacement of portions of the stained glass windows and the addition of dormers on either side of the roof to provide windows and light for living space on a new second floor. Continued...

Now Available at Bird B Gone, Inc. BeakGuard Woodpecker Deterrent Ideal for Commercial Applications

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) November 06, 2014

Bird B Gone, the leader in bird control products for commercial, industrial and residential applications offers a highly effective woodpecker deterrent for commercial and residential properties called BeakGuard.

Every year, woodpeckers cause considerable damage to commercial and residential property, particularly during the fall seasonSeptember 22nd and to December 21st. Many common woodpeckerslike the downy, hairy, and northern flickersare attracted to natural wood exteriors and occasionally stucco. The birds will aggressively drill into cedar, redwood siding, plywood, pine, fir or cypress. Woodpeckers will even peck at metal gutters, downspouts, chimney caps, TV antennas, rooftop plumbing vents, and metal roof valleys. Besides drilling for winter roosts, woodpeckers looking to feed on insects can create long, narrow furrows following horizontal or vertical seams or along window frames. The damage can be major and costly to repair and repaint. Holes can often be 2-3 inches in diameter. Its important to proactively discourage woodpeckers or they will gather in greater numbers. Pellet guns, poisons or other lethal means to get rid of woodpeckers is prohibited by the North American Migratory Bird Act, which regards these birds as a federally protected species.

Bird B Gones BeakGuard Woodpecker Deterrent is humane, effective and highly recommended for both commercial and residential applications. It can be used by pest- and bird-control professionals as well as by painters. The elastomeric acrylic finish communicates a warning signal to woodpeckers that discourages them from attacking vulnerable areas. It covers latex-painted surfaces, wood, fiber-cement, stucco, aluminum or vinyl. The compound won't harm woodpeckers or other birds, yet its durable, long lasting, resists dirt pick up and endures heavy weather. The formulation creates a vapor permeable, flexible membrane that keeps its color. BeakGuard is easily applied with a brush, roller, paint pad or ordinary spray equipment. One gallon covers approximately 180 square feet. Currently available colors include Nova White, Sand Stone, Whetstone and Portabello as well as custom colors on request.

Bird B Gone is the worlds largest manufacturer and distributor of bird repellents and bird deterrents, providing effective and humane solutions to a bird-free environment. The company provides advice, training and installation services for those who need help with these and other bird control measures.

Roofing Worker Falls Down Elevator Shaft, Dies In Mount Vernon

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    TRI-STATE NEWS HEADLINES

From our newsroom to your inbox weekday mornings at 9AM.

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) Mount Vernon police on Thursday were investigating an accident in which a worker fell to his death down an elevator shaft.

The 28-year-old New York City man, whose name has not been released, was doing roof work with four other men around 6:30 p.m. at 6 Gramatan Ave. in Mount Vernon, according to a city news release.

The man was apparently putting away his tools for the night when he fell through a screen covering the opening of the elevator shaft, and ended up landing on an elevator car several stories below, the city said.

The mans coworkers brought him back to the roof and paramedics came, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, the city said.

The Mount Vernon Buildings Department had issued a permit to Global General Construction Inc. back on Oct. 24, for masonry pointing and brick and stone work and repair on the Gramatan Avenue building, the city said. A preliminary probe indicated that roof work was not supposed to be part of the job, the city said.

The Buildings Department issued a stop work order until the investigation is done, the city said.

This is a tragic accident and our prayers go out to the family of the victim, Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest D. Davis said in the release.

Mount Vernon police and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration were investigating Thursday night.

Royals' run spurred by additions who came from Brewers

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Zack Greinke trade after the 2010 season was part of the foundation of the 2014 Royals' success. Make that a major part.

The Royals had a top-shelf haul in this deal. Credit general manager Dayton Moore with seeing the possibilities and seizing the moment.

Kansas City came up with an elite defensive shortstop, Alcides Escobar, who, in a more just world, would have already won an American League Gold Glove Award or two. Escobar's offensive game has developed to the point that he moved into the leadoff spot in the Royals' lineup and was good enough to make a real difference.

Center fielder Lorenzo Cain, a multifaceted talent, arrived from the Brewers in the same deal. He emerged in this postseason as a legitimate star. He hit .333 with a .388 on-base percentage in the 2014 postseason, scoring 13 runs in 15 games, and shining in the outfield.

The Royals also picked up Jake Odorizzi, at the time regarded as one of the best pitching prospects in the Brewers' Minor League system. Moore eventually packaged Odorizzi in the deal that brought starter James Shields and reliever Wade Davis from Tampa Bay. We all know how that worked. Shields became the leader of the rotation and Davis evolved into one of the best eighth-inning setup men in the game.

Another Brewers prospect in the trade, flamethrowing Jeremy Jeffress, did not pan out for Kansas City. He was, ironically or not, back on Milwaukee's roster and pitching well in relief during the second half of the 2014 season.

The Brewers were not shut out in this deal. They got the immediate payoff they wanted in 2011, winning a division title, setting a franchise record with 96 regular-season victories and advancing to the National League Championship Series.

The following season, they traded Greinke to the Angels. One of the players they received in return, shortstop Jean Segura, could be a long-term answer, even though he is not a defensive player of Escobar's stature.

When you look at the overall effects of this trade, the Royals could be benefiting from it for a long time. The importance of this deal for Kansas City cannot be overstated.

Further assistance came from Milwaukee prior to the 2014 season. The Royals needed a top-of-the-order hitter and stable right fielder. They got that player from the Brewers in Nori Aoki. Aoki's second-half resurgence was a huge plus in the Royals' push for the postseason.
