Santiago Calatrava Begins Construction of Church on 9/11 Site

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Construction has begun on the Saint Nicholas National Shrine in the World Trade Center complex in New York. Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava will complete the white Vermont marble shrine, which will surround a translucent central Cupola.

The original Greek Orthodox Church was destroyed during the 2001 attacks. Now located on 130 Liberty Street, not far from its former site, the structure will overlook the National September 11th Memorial. The building will continue to serve as an active parish and house of worship and will be open to the general public.

Echoing Byzantine architectural style, the shrines bright faade takes inspiration from the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and the translucent cupola will allow for a glowing effect during the night. The building is slated for completion in 2016.

Santiago Calatrava is also responsible for the World Trade Center transportation Hub, set to open in 2015. The Hub will house a terminal for PATH trains, 225,000-square-feet of retail space, and 11 subway lines.

Angie's List Report: Is Your Oven ready for the Holidays?

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(WDEF) Appliance repair experts know oven problems can be a recipe for disaster... But they can be easily avoided. Dustin Wheeldon works as an Appliance Repair Expert. He said, "You don't have to overthink cleaning your oven. The more you do it on a regular basis, the less you have to do right before the holidays." If your oven has dials or switches don't spray cleaning fluid or water around them. Remove the knobs and soak them in the sink. And be sure to use caution when using the self-clean cycle. Wheeldon added, "If you haven't used the self-clean on your oven in five years, probably not. If you do regular upkeep and servicing the oven, using the self-clean every couple of months, then you'll probably be okay." If you don't use your oven regularly, now is the time to test it. Wheeldon said, "Find something that maybe isn't a turkey, but does have an extended bake time and see how close you are on the recommended time that it's supposed to be in there to see where you're at." Angie Hicks of Angie's List said, "One part of oven maintenance that people often overlook is checking to make sure their door seals tightly. If it doesn't, your oven is not going to be able to keep its correct temperature. If you find your door isn't sealing tight it's probably bent hinges or broken spring and those are easily repaired." While many repair companies do offer emergency services on holidays, be prepared to pay top dollar. As for the turkey that was locked in the oven, Wheeldon was able to free it. He said, "It's always good to come in there and be able to save somebody's holiday for them." Angie's List says while it may help keep it clean, you should avoid using aluminum foil under the bake element in your oven. Foil is very reflective and can alter the temperature of your oven. As a result, you can overcook or under cook food.
