Retaining walls are common in the Lower Mainland when it comes to containing gardens and lawns, in large part, because of our regions rolling geography and sometimes-steep grades of land.

The downside of sitting on top of a hill is that it sometimes leaves you with nothing more than a significant drop-off when you step out the door.

Probably the most popular reason to build a retaining wall is to increase usable yard space, and to add to the overall landscape design of your yard.

Terraced hills with retaining walls and leveling out yard areas that allows enjoyment for kids and guests.

Retaining walls can be substantial undertakings and youll want to consider hiring a contractor or landscaper experienced in building retaining walls to do this major job for you.

Plan ahead before starting your project. The bigger the project is, the more youll have to consider your walls ability to hold back soil and rock that is piled up behind it.

That means solidifying and fortifying foundations, making sure youre using proper building materials and procedures, and acquiring the proper building permits from city hall.

But we dont all live in mansions and smaller retaining walls are typically used in landscaping to create some depth and perspective in gardens and landscaping.

A police pursuit ended in a deadly, fiery crash Monday night after a van that authorities allege was involved in a homicide crashed into a freeway retaining wall in Anaheim, Orange County Sheriff's Department officials said.

The crash, in which the driver was killed, occurred at about 9:25 p.m. near East Frontera Street and North Rio Vista Street, said Lt. John Roche of the Sheriff's Department. Flames engulfed the vehicle shortly after it struck a wall bordering the 91 Freeway, Roche said.

Authorities said the van matched the description of a vehicle believed to have been involved in a homicide in Tustin earlier Monday. Detectives were at the scene of that incident in the 18400 block of Warren Avenue in Tustin, the Sheriff's Department said.

A woman who was found at the Tustin home died at a local hospital after being shot at least once, Roche said.

Roche said the pursuit began in the 100 block of Franklin Street in Santa Ana shortly before the crash. Officers were watching a home they believed was connected to the Tustin homicide when they began to chase the van.

A portion of the northbound 57 Freeway was briefly shut down while investigators searched for an object that emitted sparks when the driver threw it out of the van, Roche said.

A '150 crore special project has been chalked out for Nethravathi flood management'

To protect the Port City from the flood waters of Nethravathi and Gurupur rivers, the State Minor irrigation department has started 16 retaining wall projects worth Rs 3.40 crore sponsored by Nabard in the Mangalore South Assembly constituency, said MLA J R Lobo.

Addressing a press conference in his office here on Tuesday, Lobo said that retaining walls will be built at identified places of Padau, Maroli, Kulshekar, Kudupu, Kankanadi, Alape, Bajal, Jappinamogaru and Boloor villages.The work would be completed within three months. An additional proposal of projects worth Rs 8 crore has been submitted to the government, he said.

Under Flood Management Project, a special project of Rs 150 crore has been chalked out for Nethravathi flood management and the proposal is before the State government. It is a Central- State partnership project, wherein Central government would invest 50 per cent of the total cost, he said.

J RLobo said that to extend Mangalore International Airport runway by 270 meters, it needs around Rs 1007 crores. But, as suggested by Central Civil Aviation Minister of state G M Siddeshwara, the runway can be developed in Cochin airport model with Public Private Partnership (PPP). If government comes forward.

On the other hand, the Non Resident Indians (NRI) are enthusiastic to nvest money. It will help more private airlines to start their service from Mangalore, which will help for the development of the state. I will try to attract the attention of the government with Infrastructure Development Minister R Roshan Baig, he said.

Meanwhile, he said that NRIs are requesting to allow their children to write Common Entrance Test (CET) in India. It is allowed in neighbouring states like Maharashtra, Kerala and Goa.

It is a long pending demand, so this time I will request Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande to give prominence to it, he said.
