Port Authority calls World Trade Center "the most secure office building in America"

    - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Members of the media tour an office on the 63rd floor of One World Trade Center. The skyscraper, which opened for business Monday in New York, is 104 stories tall and cost $3.9 billion. The opening came more than 13 years after the 9/11 attacks destroyed the original World Trade Center buildings. (Andrew Burton, Getty Images)

NEW YORK Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, the resurrected World Trade Center has opened for business marking an emotional milestone for New Yorkers and the nation.

Some staffers of publishing giant Conde Nast began working at 1 World Trade Center on Monday. The 104-story, $3.9 billion skyscraper dominates the Manhattan skyline. The publishing giant becomes the first commercial tenant in America's tallest building.

It's the centerpiece of the 16-acre site where the decimated twin towers once stood and where more than 2,700 people died on Sept. 11, 2001, buried under smoking mounds of fiery debris.

"The New York City skyline is whole again, as 1 World Trade Center takes its place in Lower Manhattan," said Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the building and the World Trade Center site.

The agency began moving into neighboring 4 World Trade Center last week.

He said 1 World Trade Center "sets new standards of design, construction, prestige and sustainability; the opening of this iconic building is a major milestone in the transformation of Lower Manhattan into a thriving 24/7 neighborhood."

With construction fences gone and boxes of office equipment in place, the company moved into what Foye called "the most secure office building in America."

Prior to the move, Conde Nast addressed any issues employees might have had about moving into the tower.

The architectural firm, T.J. Gottesdiener of the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, says it took extra measures to strengthen the steel-and-concrete structure.

PSU attempts to cut energy use

    - November 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Imagine you want to use 20 percent less energy in your home.

It's a noble goal, but it can be tough. You might have to change your insulation, install energy-efficient windows, put on a new roof, maybe get a different furnace or water heater. You have to get your kids to turn off the lights when they leave a room, and learn to take a quicker shower in the morning.

Now imagine that you have almost 100,000 kids, spread out in 24 cities, with 289 houses in one town alone.

Welcome to saving energy at Penn State.

The university joined the U.S. Department of Energy's Better Buildings Challenge this month, committing to cutting the energy use in its buildings by 20 percent over the next 10 years. More than 200 businesses, organizations and government agencies have signed onto the challenge, including Macy's and Kohl's department stores, the states of Massachusetts and Maryland and cities such as Denver and Atlanta.

Penn State is the largest educational institution to pledge participation, as well as being a leader in the state. The university is one of First Energy's five largest customers in Pennsylvania.

According to Rob Cooper, director of energy and engineering for the Office of Physical Plant, the challenge is the continuation of something Penn State has been working toward for more than a decade. Since 2003, the university has invested $75 million in energy-saving projects.

That might seem like a lot of money, but the University Park campus alone has a $14 million electric bill every year. Heating the buildings over the winter takes another $12 million. Cooper said the projects have actually made it possible to get energy costs down to levels from 10 years ago while simultaneously adding 4 million square feet of facilities to the campus.

Some projects are being tackled purely for energy reasons, such as converting the West Campus Steam Plant from using coal for production to cleaner-burning natural gas. Other projects are being tackled as they arise.

There are building projects happening all over campus, and as they are planned, OPP is evaluating them for efficient energy improvements.

    - November 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Massachusetts brick walkways and steps evoke the feeling of a bygone era, a golden time of progress and certainty and can imbue your yard and garden with a similar feeling of steadfast permanence. Using brick in landscaping is always a good option, but particularly appropriate when paired with a brick home. It can turn a drab, dull, or awkward outdoor area into the favorite family room.

Whether the backyard is small or large, regular or irregular, or even sloping, an outdoor brick patio can create the intimate backyard room your family has always wanted. Wouldn't it be lovely to have an expansive multi-room outdoor area, perfect for entertaining?

The brick itself can conform to create a Clinton outdoor fireplace, a thoroughfare, a garden area with or without raised beds, an open floor for eating, dancing, and socializing or a tranquil and removed area just perfect for getting away from it all. Walkways can artfully surround your in-ground pool, hot tub, or sauna, guiding traffic in, around, and through, from the door of your home to the places you most want to end up outside.
