The Jewelry Districts South Street Power Station, commonly known as the Dynamo House, will undergo an extensive renovation starting in December or January, the Corporation announced following its October meeting. In the following weeks, the University will sign a lease with private developer Commonwealth Venture that will provide the University with over 136,000 square feet of administrative office space within the Dynamo building, said Stephen Maiorisi, vice president for facilities management.
The rest of the building will be used by University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College as the Nursing Education Center.
A new facility will also be constructed nearby that will house 164 beds for graduate, medical and nursing school students, a 260-car parking garage, a retail space and an incubator space, Maiorisi said. Both structures follow plans outlined by the University over the summer.
The new complex will sit in the Dynamo Houses parking lot, Maiorisi said. The idea of renovating the Dynamo House for University purposes followed Commonwealth Ventures proposal to build the new facility, he added.
A total of 12 university administrative offices currently housed in the Brown Office Building on College Hill will move into the Dynamo space during the summer or early fall of 2016. The offices will constitute part of the third floor and all of the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the building, Maiorisi said.
Shifting most of the Universitys administrative body to the Jewelry District will facilitate interdepartmental communication, Maiorisi said. By consolidating those administrative functions, we can all work together better there in one location as opposed to being spread out across campus.
The administrative migration will also free up 90,000 square feet of space on College Hill, Maiorisi added. The Brown Office Building can then be renovated to be something else, something more geared towards the academic mission (of) the University.
Margaret Klawunn, vice president for campus life and student services, said the prime real estate at the center of campus opens up possibilities both for academic programs and for new initiatives that will be valuable for students.
The Providence Preservation Society named the Dynamo House, which has been vacant since 1999, among the citys 10 most endangered properties in 2011 and 2012. Though there were efforts to redevelop the space into a Rhode Island history museum, these plans fell through in 2008, when the project developer went bankrupt during the economic downturn.
The Dynamo House was the greatest preservation issue in the state, said Paul Wackrow, Providence Preservation Societys coordinator of advocacy and education. The current development saved the building. Im not sure how much longer it would have been around if these groups didnt step in, he added, explaining that the building has glaring structural issues, such as missing portions of the roof, which would have led to the buildings deterioration and eventual demolition.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Architects have finished designing downtown Baton Rouges 50,000-square-foot River Center branch but construction documents still have to be finished before companies can bid on the project.
The planned downtown translucent Library of the Future building will cost about $19 million. It will be located amid some of downtown Baton Rouges most eye-catching architecture, such as the Old State Capitol and the 19th Judicial District Courthouse.
Architect Rex Cabaniss told The Advocate (http://bit.ly/10NwgLM ) the library will be the center showpiece of downtown.
WHLC Architecture designed the building in collaboration with Boston-based Schwartz/Silver Architects.
The library will include computer commons, technology labs and panoramic views on its upper terrace.
Its not a square, cookie-cutter kind of building, Library Director Spencer Watts said.
Something not included in the tight budget is parking. Watts said the East Baton Rouge Parish Library system does not have the money to add parking but he hopes the urban space surrounding the library will encourage people to walk and ride bikes.
Watts said the Library Board hopes more parking will be available nearby downtown.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Library system has been doling out construction projects left and right. The new, $35 million, 126,000-square-foot Main Library opened in January.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently extended a Rs 8,000-crore (Rs 80 billion) central support for building roads in Jammu & Kashmir, Union Cabinet's approval for the big-ticket announcement came in barely 48 hours.
Unlike in the past, the proposal did not get stuck in the corridors of the Planning Commission, a Nehruvian-era body.
The Commission, which occupied the centre stage in all critical economic and social decisions until a few months ago, is now but a shadow of its former glorious self.
Its office, an imposing five-storied structure opposite Parliament House, earlier teemed with people engaged in one or the other meeting, especially in the run-up to annual Budget preparations.
Not anymore; that seems to be a story of the past, as hectic activity has given way to an eerie sense of uncertainty.
During its heyday in the 1960s and '70s, even the location where a public-sector undertaking should come up was decided by the Commission. But, today, the pivotal role it was known to play in shaping the country's development trajectory is conspicuously missing from the scheme of things.
The Planning Commission's importance gradually reduced over the years as India moved from a Soviet-style controlled economy to a more market-driven one. But the body still wielded considerable clout, particularly on important decisions of the Cabinet or Groups of Ministers.
Though all major policy decisions are referred to the Commission even today, its opinion is no longer paramount. In fact, even as a new body to replace the Planning Commission takes shape, the wings of the old one are being gradually clipped.
Its diminishing role is also evident in the fact that a mid-term appraisal (MTA) - a course correction of sorts that in normal circumstances is completed by the third year of a Plan period - is yet to be done for the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-13 to 2016-17).
"We are ready with our sectoral assessment for MTA. But, as of October, there has been no signal from the government on whether or not it wants to carry out the process," said a senior Planning Commission official who did not wish to be named.

Another member of the Manning family gets to take on rising star Andrew Luck.
In each of the last two years, Andrew Luck faced off with Peyton Manning in some of the most ballyhooed (and enjoyable) games of their respective seasons. Luck gets his chance at the younger Manning brother when his Indianapolis Colts take on the New York Giants.
The Colts began the season off slow, dropping their first two games behind the frustrating offensive game plan of Pep Hamilton. While some elements of that approach remain (Trent Richardson still receives more carries than the far superior Ahmad Bradshaw), the offense has taken off behind the transcendent play of Luck. And for much of the season, the Colts' defense has stepped up, holding opponents to 17 points or less four times.
Likewise, the Giants didn't rush out of the gate. Due in large part to the slow installation of Ben McAdoo's West Coast scheme, New York looked lost offensively in its first two games. The offense picked up steam soon after as Eli Manning and the Giants went off for 30 points or more for three straight weeks. Though the team lost each of its last two games, it remains in the hunt for the playoffs.
In his third year, Luck has come into his own as a quarterback. While he still makes his fair share of bad decisions as exemplified by his nine interceptions, Luck led the NFL in touchdown passes heading into Week 9 with 22. He also topped the league in passing yards with 2,731. The primary beneficiary has been T.Y. Hilton, a speedy, undersized wideout who has registered a league-leading 866 receiving yards.
Manning is off to one of the best starts of his career. Though only a career 58.8-percent passer, Manning is completing passes at a clip of 64.9 percent this year, the best mark of his career. He's also throwing far few interceptions (five) and more touchdowns (14) through half a season than he has at any point as a professional. The Giants' leading healthy pass catcher is Larry Donnell, who sits just 5 receiving yards behind the injured Victor Cruz for most on the team.
Ahmad Bradshaw - Though Richardson remains the starter in Indianapolis, Bradshaw has definitely separated himself as the Colts top back. He leads the team, averaging 4.9 yards per carry and is on pace for 12 receiving touchdowns, the most by a running back in NFL history.
Odell Beckham Jr. - Despite missing the first four games of the season, Beckham has made quite the impact on the Giants offense. Since returning from injury, Beckham is averaging a touchdown a game. More importantly, his presence stretches opposing defenses and opens things up underneath for the tight ends led by Donnell.

ATTLEBORO - Attleboro Chapter, Daughters of The American Revolution, will be holding a dedication and open house this Sunday, Nov. 9, to celebrate the completion of the window replacement project at the historic 1723 Peck House.
The local chapter took advantage of a $5,000 matching grant from the DAR to complete the installation of historically-correct windows in the 2 Elizabeth St. house. The dwelling was originally built near what is now Capron Park but was moved to North Main Street in 1750. The local DAR chapter saved the building from demolition in 1902 and moved it across the street to its present location.

One World Trade Center in New York on October 17, 2014 JEWEL SAMAD/AFP/Getty Images
NEW YORK -- Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, the resurrected World Trade Center is again opening for business - marking an emotional milestone for both New Yorkers and the nation.
Publishing giant Conde Nast will start moving Monday into One World Trade Center, a 104-story, $3.9 billion skyscraper that dominates the Manhattan skyline. It is America's tallest building.
It's the centerpiece of the 16-acre site where the decimated twin towers once stood and where more than 2,700 people died on Sept. 11, 2001, buried under smoking mounds of fiery debris.
"The New York City skyline is whole again, as One World Trade Center takes its place in Lower Manhattan," said Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns both the building and the World Trade Center site.
He said One World Trade Center "sets new standards of design, construction, prestige and sustainability; the opening of this iconic building is a major milestone in the transformation of Lower Manhattan into a thriving 24/7 neighborhood."
With construction fences gone and boxes of office equipment in place, Conde Nast CEO Chuck Townsend planned to walk Monday into what Foye calls "the most secure office building in America."
Only about 170 of his company's 3,400 employees are moving in now, filling five floors of the tower, said Patricia Rockenwagner, a Conde Nast vice president and spokeswoman. About 3,000 more will arrive by early 2015.
The building is 60 percent leased, with another 80,000 square feet going to the advertising firm Kids Creative, the stadium operator Legends Hospitality, the BMB Group investment adviser, and Servcorp, a provider of executive offices.
The government's General Services Administration signed up for 275,000 square feet, and the China Center, a trade and cultural facility, will cover 191,000 square feet.
