LAKE HAMILTON | To help address the poor conditions in Lake Hamilton's parks, Town Council members approved a grant application for $100,000 from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection during a special meeting Friday.
Two $50,000 Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program grants would be used to address the issues in Gunter Park and Sample Park.
In the first phase for Sample Park, town staff would like to replace the roof on the shelter, add a drinking fountain, replace two picnic tables with four recycled-material picnic tables, add four barbecue stands and two trash cans, and extend the water system to the shelter.
Staff also would like to update the signs and replace the wire fencing with the white wood fencing that the rest of the park has.
In future phases, the town would like to pave the parking lot, add a new boat ramp and install new lighting, a playground, a gazebo and modern restrooms.
For the first phase of Gunter Park, staff proposed a plan similar to the one for Sample Park, but added that they would like to redevelop the walking path and develop picnic areas with the grant money.
Town Planner Doug Leonard said the applications will go to the Legislature for approval, and if passed, he expects the town could receive the grant money in July and that construction would start about this time next year.
According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection website, the competitive program's maximum grant is $200,000.

Local arborist and Billings native, Stephanie Ridl, loves small towns, family and trees. She lives in Sidney with her husband, Mike and their daughter, Katrina, 8.
I am a parks superintendent but since we dont have a community forestry department, or a city arborist, we have a need for it, Ridl said. I asked if I could take it over and they were very willing to let me.
Ridl began college at the University of Wyoming in Laramie with a focus in criminal justice before she decided to move back to Montana and peruse a degree in horticulture science.
I have always had an interest in criminal justice, even as a kid thats what I thought I would do, Ridl said. My dad has always been in landscaping and horticulture and I worked with him through high school. I know trees and I love trees. I felt more comfortable in that so I made the leap back to Montana.
After completing her bachelor of science degree in Bozeman, Ridl moved back to Billings and landed a job at a nursery center.
I just kind of missed the small town mentality and the small town folk, she said. Billings was already too big for me after Id been gone for six years.
Ridl met her now husband, Mike, who was pursuing custody of his daughter and the couple moved to Sidney so his daughter could live with them.
He has family here and so it worked, Ridl said. The jobs were good and it was a good spot to stay. We got married last year.
Ridl is a certified arborist and a certified plant professional, as well as a certified applicator. She said she loves everything about plants, but her real passion is trees.
I think one thing I really love about Sidney is that theres such a need for that right now, with the elm trees, Ridl said.

Tile has a rich and varied history in decor, from Roman floor mosaics to majolica to Delft ceramics to Mexicanterracotta.
These styles and more continue to inspire artistry. Many of the newest collections of ceramic and porcelain tile were on display this fall at the five-day Cersaie international exhibition in Bologna,Italy.
Some of thetrends:
Across the show, faux finishes ruled. What seemed to be barnwood or other timber planking was actually porcelain. Manufacturers can now produce tile that looks and even feels like wood, marble, granite or cement, but is thin andlightweight.

Garden sheds come in a variety of styles, materials, sizes and construction methods.
Selecting asuitable Garden Shed is not as straightforward as it seems.
There is such a variety of styles, materials, sizes and construction methods, you can easy spend weeks driving around various garden centres trying to pick the right one.
Our overview of Garden Sheds for sale in the UK and Ireland, provided below, can hopefully save you a lot of time by helping you narrow down your options.
Apart from contemporary styles like the UK-designedArchipod (top right), garden sheds usually come with one of two roof styles pent or apex.
Pent garden sheds (bottom left picture) are built with a gently sloping roof, with the highest part of the shed in the front or the back.
Apex garden sheds (pictures top left and bottom right), are tallest in the middle with the roof sloping to the sides of the shed (sheds with side entrance) or to front and back (sheds with front entrance).
Apex sheds can have either high-peaked roofs (top left) or gently sloping ones (bottom right).
The choice between an apex or a pent roof may seem like a trivial point, but it is not.
Pent roofs are better suitable for areas where height is limited or restricted e.g. under overhanging branches or next to a wall. They are however a bad option if you experience a lot of snowfall. Snow tends to accumulate on a pent roof weighing it down. This can, in extreme cases, cause the roof to cave in.Apex sheds are better suited for such extreme weather conditions.

Rebecca and William Phalen felt their formal dining room needed a fresh look and little sparkle.
For help and ideas, the Phalens turned to Joann Kandrac, designer and co-owner of Kandrac & Kole Interior Designs. The couple had previously worked with their firm on several larger projects in their East Cobb home.
The new design had to incorporate the dining room table and, more importantly, the gold-framed oil painting of a marsh on St. Simons Island, where William grew up.
While the new rug, accessories and art (some reframed in brass) warmed up the traditional space, the contemporary and curvy brass chandelier adds some glitter and glamour.
The gold frame was the inspiration and key reason we incorporated brass into the room, said Kandrac. The fixture is a favorite of mine, and I was so excited when we had the opportunity to put it into a clients home.
The Phalens are thrilled with their new dining room, especially the 10-light Ringmaster Chandelier by Atlanta-based Currey & Co.
It adds a wow factor to the room, said Rebecca, an attorney and mother of three children, ages six, eight and 10. But the entire room is now more inviting.
If you havent noticed, brass is back. No, not that shiny lacquered brass of the 1980s and early 1990s.
If you elected to get rid of your old shiny brass fixtures, faucets and cabinet knobs, dont fret, said Kandrac. The new brass doesnt look like the old.
The brass being used now has a more muted, matte and weathered finish, said Kandrac. The metals in todays brass will age and become more attractive over time, without the high shine.

A growing economy appears to have made Coloradans more hungry to eat out. Food and drinking establishments account for about one out of five net new jobs added in the state this year.
And the industry's 6.2 percent job growth rate in Colorado this year is the fastest of any state and the strongest here since 1995, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
"When people have jobs, they have more disposable income. And when they have more disposable income, they go out to eat," said Sonia Riggs, president and CEO of the Colorado Restaurant Association.
Food-service employment through the first nine months of the year rose by 12,460 positions from the first nine months of 2013, and about 7,060 of those new jobs came in the metro Denver area.
Restaurant marketing consultant John Imbergamo said he has noticed that new restaurant openings versus closings this year are running three to one and, in some months, four to one.
"We are seeing some restaurateurs who have one restaurant opening their second or those with two opening their third," he said.
Union Station's redevelopment alone brought 10 new restaurants to the market in a 30-day span this past summer, and new eateries continue to pop up in places such as the River North Art District, along Colfax Avenue and in suburban pockets such as Northglenn's Webster Lake Promenade.
Chef and entrepreneur Jennifer Jasinski, a client of Imbergamo's, hired 80 people when she opened a Union Station eatery called Stoic & Genuine. Despite a mile-high altitude, the seafood venue serves everything from Black River Oscietra caviar to loaded lobster rolls.
Jasinski said finding qualified staff, especially in the kitchen, proved much more difficult this time around than it was when she opened Euclid Hall four years ago.
"Being a cook is hard work and not glamorous, and all the skilled cooks are having an easy time getting work," Jasinski said.
