Tweed plumber pleads not guilty over hijacking scare

    - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MATT Christopher Lockley has pleaded not guilty to interfering with a crew member after he sparked a hijacking scare on a flight from Brisbane to Bali.

Mr Lockley faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday, accused of pounding on the cockpit door during his flight last April, the Brisbane Times reports.

The court heard Mr Lockley removed the rope between economy and business class several hours into his flight, before approaching the locked door to the flight deck.

Flight attendant Angela Demo told the court he was "pounding on the flight deck door and turning the handle".

Neil Cooper was the pilot who sent a code to alert air traffic control of a possible hijacking - but he told the court he didn't know exactly what was happening.

Lead Paint Remains A Threat in Homes

    - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you or someone you know is planning work on a pre-1978 home, please make time to take precautions against the possibility of lead poisoning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that about 500,000 U.S children ages 1 to 5 have elevated lead levels in their blood. Lead paint, estimated to exist in 40 percent of the U.S. housing stock, is considered the most hazardous source of lead for U.S. children, along with lead-contaminated dust.

Even a tiny amount of lead can cause nervous system, kidney, hearing or other damage, as well as development problems. Children age 6 and younger are at special risk because they lack the developed blood-brain barrier that protects older children and adults from more severe effects.

Since 1978, the federal government has banned residential use of lead-based paint. But old paint can chip. Also, any project that disturbs old paint such as painting, remodeling or window installation can create dust and debris that an infant or child may inhale or ingest.

Thats why the Environmental Protection Agency has required, since 2010, that contractors whose work disturbs lead paint be trained and certified in proper safety techniques.

Unfortunately, the Angies List research team recently found significant discrepancies between what federal law requires regarding lead-safe home-improvement practices and what some service providers tell potential customers.

Posing as parents who wanted work to be done in their 2-year-olds bedroom in a 1920s home, our team called 150 renovation contractors. We said we wanted to know the proper ways to strip paint or replace windows, window frames and door frames. Nearly 32 percent of the contractors told us they didnt have EPA lead-safety certification, and nearly 11 percent described work practices that might actually result in lead poisoning.

In 2007, when our team conducted similar research, about a third of contractors we interviewed gave advice contradictory to federal guidelines. Im glad theres been an improvement, but our work shows that homeowners must take matters into their own hands when ensuring the safety of their loved ones.

If you own a pre-1978 house, or your kids spend time in one, please spend the time and money it takes to ensure that a home improvement project doesnt create a health hazard:

Hire someone to test your home for lead. There are many in-home kits you can buy, but for more certainty, hire a reputable, experienced lead detection service.

Ask any painting or remodeling contractor youre considering if the company is appropriately certified in lead-safe practices.

    State seeks restitution from landscaper

    - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine today announced a lawsuit against a landscaping contractor accused of failing to deliver lawn care services despite accepting hundreds of dollars in advance payment from Ohio consumers.

The lawsuit charges Israel Alex Barrett, of Cape Coral, Fla., with consumer law violations. In the lawsuit, the attorney general seeks consumer restitution and civil penalties.

We wont tolerate businesses that take advantage of Ohio consumers, DeWine said. This contractor went door to door signing up customers but left town before providing the promised services.

According to the lawsuit, Barrett had a principal place of business in Goshen, Ohio. He used various business names, including Pleasant Plain Lawn & Landscape, Alexs Elite Lawn Care, and Elis Lawn Care, which are not registered with the Ohio Secretary of State.

He contacted homeowners through door-to-door visits and accepted about $300 each from consumers. He offered a complimentary aeration and one free treatment as part of the offer. His six-step lawn treatment program was supposed to last from early spring to early winter.

In March 2014, Barrett closed his operation in Ohio. Although he notified customers that he was closing, he did not find another landscaping contractor to apply the lawn treatments, nor did he provide refunds.

The Ohio Attorney Generals Office is aware of 12 complaints from consumers who said that Barrett provided no service or only a fraction of the services for which he was paid.

The Attorney Generals lawsuit, filed in the Warren County Court of Common Pleas, charges Barrett with violating Ohios Consumer Sales Practices Act and Home Solicitation Sales Act by failing to deliver services, performing shoddy work, and failing to provide proper notice of consumers right to cancel a home solicitation sale.

Consumers who believe they have been treated unfairly should contact the Ohio Attorney Generals Office at http://www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov or 800-282-0515.

Worker killed, 2 more injured when brick facade collapses on SW Side

    - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

One construction worker was killed and two others were injured Saturday afternoon when a brick facade collapsed from the front of a West Lawn building.

About 1 p.m. the facade fell from the first story of a commercial building in the 4100 block of West 63rd Street, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said.

Roberto Topia-Gonzalez, 44, of the 2500 block of South Homan Avenue, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 1:41 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

An autopsy performed Sunday found Topia-Gonzalez died of multiple injuries he suffered when he was crushed by a falling brick wall, the medical examiner's office said. His death was ruled an accident.

Another worker, a 30-year-old man, was also taken in serious-to-critical condition to Christ Medical Center, while a third construction worker, a 44-year-old man, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in fair-to-serious condition, authorities said. A 41-year-old man denied medical treatment, police said.

Mimi Simon, a spokeswoman with the city's Department of Buildings, said the work at the site was being performed by unlicensed contractors without building permits.

The building owner has been instructed to abate the dangerous and hazardous conditions, remove debris and erect a heavy duty canopy for public safety, Simon said in a statement.

The building's owner will be issued several violations upon the completion of a full inspection, Simon said.

Getting ready for the winter season

    - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Rbecca Groff, correspondent

    November 1, 2014 | 8:00 pm

Tis not quite the season yet, but winter and its accompanying notorious four-letter word are edging closer with each falling leaf.

While many of the areas snow removal companies offer diversified services that include concrete work and green services such as mowing, fertilizing and landscaping, the time to prepare for the snow removal portion of their business is at hand.

Its a big conversion going from lawn care and landscaping over to snow, said Greg Scharf, who has owned and operated Gregs Lawn, Landscaping and Snow Removal for the past 31 years.

We work on trucks year-round getting them ready for the snow season. Snow is the worst thing you can do to a truck, he said.

Scharf has four full-time mechanics dedicated to keeping the trucks and equipments in operating condition. While he plans to add on a great deal of part-time seasonal workers to help with snow removal, he said it is becoming more difficult these days to find them.

The economy is changing and people are loosening up with their purse strings a little bit more, he noted. With more people putting on house additions and the like, that is what is consuming a lot of the labor pool. We just cant bring them on fast enough right now.

In a good season, such as last years persistent snowfall, this line of work isnt for the faint of heart.

We were running 24 hours a day, and last year it seemed like it hit us every weekend, he recalled. It just kills your guys.
