According to biographer Anthony Flint, Le Corbusier (seen here in an undated photo) once proposed razing Paris' historic Marais neighborhood in order to give the dilapidated district a fresh start.
What do an Ikea showroom floor, urban housing projects and Kanye West have in common? They've all been inspired, at least to some degree, by the Swiss-born French architect Le Corbusier. Though his name has fallen out of the popular imagination Frank Lloyd Wright is much more likely to ring a bell Le Corbusier's influence is visible nearly everywhere you look in the landscape of the modern world, sometimes for better, and sometimes for worse.
Anthony Flint has written a new biography of the architect called Modern Man: The Life of Le Corbusier, Architect of Tomorrow. As he tells NPR's Rachel Martin, today Le Corbusier is either derided or revered.
"He's blamed for urban renewal ... urban freeways, even countless suburban office parks with their horizontal strip windows," he says. "But what he was trying to do at the time, if you go back to the 1920s, was he was challenging the status quo. He believed that the city wasn't up to its full potential. And this spirit of innovation, I think, is something that can be applied in today's developing world cities in the 21st century just millions and millions of people streaming into cities and many of them moving directly to slums. So, those challenges are very much before us, in the same way that Le Corbusier faced them."
On Le Corbusier's shifting World War II alliances
He was nothing if not an opportunist. And during World War II, he rather aggressively sought to join the [collaborationist] Vichy government after the Nazi occupation of France, and he wanted to be the sort of urban czar for the Vichy government, and he consorted with some quite unsavory characters. ... He did say some things about Hitler in a letter to his mother that suggested that there was inherently a grand vision for Europe in what he did. And he was saying all the right things, if you will, to kind of ingratiate himself in the administration of the Vichy government.
Now, he did give up on this pretty quickly. And so, he ends up getting himself back to Paris. And by 1944, and of course 1945, he switched sides again and starts advising [French resistance leader Charles] de Gaulle about post-war housing and urban policies.
On the building that best exemplifies Le Corbusier's work
I guess I would say Unit d'Habitation in [Marseilles, France,] might have been the most inspiring and the most emblematic for how he thought about housing and efficient housing design. ... It's straight out of an Ikea catalog when you walk into some of these apartments. They're arranged over 12 floors, essentially, like "bottles in a wine rack" that was how he described it and it makes very efficient use of space. There are sliding doors that, you know, have chalkboards on them to write down grocery lists, built-in shelves. There's also a balcony that looks over the Mediterranean and makes things feel open. But it's just a terrific, efficient use of space. And within the building itself: theatre; shops; on the rooftop a gym; a school. So, it was a new approach to living.

The 49ers seized momentum of the game early in the quarter, when safety Antoine Bethea timed a ball thrownby Rams quarterback Austin Davis andintercepted itat the Rams 35-yard line.
Bethea sagged off his man, backpedaled and made a nice grab of a pass that Davis tried to get to wide receiver Tavon Austin.
Three plays later, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick rolled right, stopped near the line of scrimmage, surveyed the landscape and found receiver Anquan Boldin all alone in the middle of the field,
Kaepernick got the ball to Boldin, who turned and navigated the remainder of the yards for a 27-yard touchdown that gave the 49ers a 10-3 lead.
Cornerback Perrish Cox intercepted Davis on the Rams ensuing possession and put the 49ers in business once again. However, the 49ers drive ended soon after it started and culminated with Andy Lee punting.
The Rams tied the game for a second time when they parlayed a Robert Quinn sack-fumble of Kaepernick into a 55-yard scoring drive.
Davis connected with wide receiver Kenny Britt on a crossing route, and Britt kept running into the end zone untouched for a 21-yard score.
Cornerback Chris Culliver was on Britt at the line, then let Britt go. Linebacker Chris Borland had no chance at catching up with Britt after he spotted Britt beyond him and with the ball.
The half ended with the 49ers attempting a 55-yard field goal. Phil Dawsons kick came up short, and it was fielded by St. Louis Tavon Austin.
For some reason, Austin danced around in the end zone before he advanced the ball into the field of play. By that time, 49ers coverage guy Derek Carrier met Austin about the 2-yard line, with Austin retreating into the end zone.

Coleen Rooney has seen off a bid to build 15 new homes overlooking her sprawling 5million neo-Georgian palace after saying the development would ruin the village.
She complained to planning bosses saying the development - which included five affordable homes - would damage the special landscape around the mansion she shares with Wayne in Cheshire.
But the WAG has been accused of hypocrisy after she bulldozed the original 1930s Prestbury mansion and replaced it with 'Waynesor Castle' - complete with pink-interior swimming pool.
She was backed by almost 60 neighbours, including former Manchester United defender Wes Brown's wife Leanne and ex-Slade rocker Noddy Holder's wife Suzan.

A court has rejected the home-building plans of a north shore property owner due to controversial new bushfire laws that allow unfettered tree clearing around properties, in a ruling that has ramifications for development throughout NSW.
A court has rejected the home-building plans of a north shore land owner due to controversial new bushfire laws that allow unfettered tree clearing around properties, in a ruling that has ramifications for development throughout NSW.
Critics say the laws, introduced in August after the Blue Mountains bushfires destroyed more than 200 properties last year, are ill-considered and are being used to clear land for development or improve views. The government says the rules help protect homes.
The so called "10/50" measures, which are under review, allow home owners near some bushfire-prone areas to clear without approval trees within 10 metres or shrubs within 50 metres of a home.
The NSW Land and Environment Court hasrejected a proposal for a two-storey home on a bushy block at Beecroft because the laws would allow the owner to uproot more than half a critically endangered blue gum forest nearby.
Parts of the site had already been cleared and a driveway built.Hornsby Council had previously knocked back the proposal, arguing the forest should be protected.
Last week, Gosford City Council rejected plans to subdivide about five hectares of land at Avoca Beach for residential development because important ridge-top vegetation could be ripped up under the new laws. It said while the proposal had merit, the 10/50 policy had created "uncertainty" and would overrule conditions imposed by the council.
Tweed Shire Council has also warned the laws may limit development that might otherwise be approved.
It blamed the state government policy for an incident at Fingal Head in August when a landowner cleared a swathof rare littoral rainforest. The move, although lawful, was reportedly decried as a "massacre" by outraged neighbours.
