The city of Longview is still feeling the effects of the 2011 drought and was forced to cut down more than 200 dead or dying trees during the last fiscal year.
If there is a tree on city-owned property and it has the potential to cause a danger, a public safety hazard (it is removed), said Director of Community Services Laura Hill.
The city spent about $80,000 to remove dead trees this past year, and is expected to spend as much this year, Hill said.
All trees taken down were either dead or diseased, she said. Trees are removed from city parks and city right of way if they present a potential danger to people or property.
The number of trees removed annually has skyrocketed since a 2011 drought that killed about 301 million trees across the state and removed about 4 percent of Northeast Texas trees, according to a study by the Texas A&M Forest Service.
My budget used to be about $22,000 (for tree removal), and then after the 2011 drought, that next year was in excess of $100,000; so, it has kind of leveled off, but we had so many trees that were just weakened, Hill said.
The year after the drought, the department spent more than $90,000 to remove about 640 dead trees from parks, walking trails, cemeteries and other public property.
Chris Brown, the forest inventory and analysis coordinator for the forest service, said seeing continued damages from the devastating drought is not surprising.
At one point during summer 2011, 95 percent of the state was in the most extreme drought classification, leading to statewide wildfires and low lake levels.
That will be a long-term problem. That will slowly get better over time. Although, in the years since we still have been in drought conditions, Brown said.

Tile has a rich and varied history in dcor Roman floor mosaics, majolica, Delft ceramics, Mexican terracotta.
These styles and more continue to inspire artistry. Many of the newest collections of ceramic and porcelain tile were on display this fall at the Cersaie international exhibition in Bologna, Italy.
Some of the trends:
Master impostors
Across the show, faux finishes ruled. What seemed to be barnwood or other timber planking was actually porcelain. Manufacturers can now produce tile that looks and even feels like wood, marble, granite or cement but is thin and lightweight.
The application advantages are obvious: A 20-foot slab of slim porcelain printed to look like stone is a lot easier to make and install than the real thing. It can be wrapped up kitchen islands, walls and even ceilings, and its easily cut to accommodate plugs or faucets.
Advancements in digital printing have taken faux finishes a long way from earlier versions that looked unrealistic and one-dimensional. Now the detail is more precise, the image is embedded deep in the tile, and the surface texture is transformed.
In the U.S., the Reclamation collection from Crossville, based in Crossville, Tennessee, is comprised of an urban-industrial mix of cement and tiles that look like salvaged wood with names like Steel City, Cotton Exchange and Tobacco Road. (www.crossvilleinc.com)
Serenissima Cir, based in Casalgrande, Italy, got ahold of a palette of brick from Prohibition-era Chicago and used it to create a tile collection that looks and feels like time-worn brick, right down to the original makers "Chicago" stamp. (www.cir.it)
Metallic glazes are also evolving. Youll see patterns with a subtle brush of coppery glitter, while others have dramatic gold, copper and silver finishes especially striking on 3-D tiles. Antiquing gives mirrored tiles a mercury-glass quality.

The community of Luther is making progress in finding a solution to the towns sewer problems, thanks to the efforts of a committee that has been meeting weekly.
During a special council meeting Thursday night, the committee, led by Tanya Doyle, who co-owns BFE Vintage Motorcycles in Luther with her husband, gave the Luther City Council an update on the committees progress and findings.
Rather than going along with the councils proposed city-wide sewer project and ordinance, the committee has come up with a potential solution that will be more favorable to residents. The committee is proposing each resident or property owner in Luther should be responsible for bringing the septic system on their property up to compliance with Boone County regulations. Members of the committee canvassed the town, checking with property owners to see if their septic systems were in compliance. As a result, the committee came up with a list of 37 properties in the town where it is unknown if those properties septic systems are in compliance.
In addition to the sewer issues, the town wants to resolve the drainage issues that have caused headaches for residents for a number of years. After speaking with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the committee learned that if the town repairs and cleans the existing tile, the drainage issues could be resolved. Therefore, the committee is proposing the council approves a plan to clean all existing tiles, repair all broken tiles and add additional tile or increased tile sizes where necessary. The committee also wants the city to pass an ordinance that adopts the Iowa state septic code.
I cannot see why the residents of Luther would be against this, Doyle said of the committees proposals.
Doyle also discussed the $370,000 I-JOBS grant the city obtained and needs to use by next year. After doing some research into the grant, the committee discovered the grant would cover 23 percent of the total project expense. Construction permits would need to be obtained and project plans would need to be approved by Jan. 30, 2015, with all work completed by June 30, 2015, in order to use the grant money. The individuals Doyle has talked to have voiced willingness to work with the community so they can still make use of the grant money.
Council member Erica Herold pointed out that the town may be able to use the I-JOBS grant to pay off a state revolving fund loan used for services provided by MSA Professional Services, a Des Moines engineering firm. MSA was contracted to design a sewer system plan for the town.
After much discussion, Herold requested the Luther sewer project be put on the next council meeting agenda, stating she would be in favor of abandoning it so the town can move forward with the committees proposed plan. No action was taken on the committees proposed plan during Thursday nights meeting.
The next Luther City Council meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in Luther City Hall.

Work has begun on the 32-unit guest room expansion and renovation of the restaurant dining patio at Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort.
The project includes the construction of six new single and two-story guest room buildings on the north side of the existing resort property, at 5501 N. Hacienda del Sol Road in the Catalina Foothills.
The new guest rooms have been designed by Eglin + Bresler Architects to capture the Southwestern feel of the existing resort, with exposed wood and tile elements. Rooms will also feature patios or balconies with city and mountain views.
The expansion will bring the resorts room count to 62 rooms, from 30.
The $300,000 renovation of the patio will be complete around the first of the year and the $3.5 million room expansion will be done toward the end of summer, said Joe Donovan, project manager for W.E. ONeil Construction Company, Inc., which is handling the construction.
Also, a new commissary building will house business operations.
The expansion is expected to be finished at the end of next summer.
The expansion is expected to be finished at the end of this coming summer.
