WASHINGTON -- The National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) Remodeling Market Index (RMI) reclaimed the high-water mark of 57 in the third quarter of 2014. This is the sixth consecutive quarter for an RMI reading above 50.
An RMI above 50 indicates that more remodelers report market activity is higher (compared to the prior quarter) than report it is lower. The overall RMI averages ratings of current remodeling activity with indicators of future remodeling activity.
"Most remodelers remain confident that the market is improving as home owners undertake renovations, large and small," said NAHB Remodelers Chair Paul Sullivan, CAPS, CGR, CGP, of Waterville Valley, N.H. "The consistency and longevity of positive RMI readings are in line with the gradual recovery of the housing industry."
The RMI's future market conditions index rose to 58 from 56 in the previous quarter. All four of its subcomponents--calls for bids, amount of work committed for the next three months, backlog of jobs and appointments for proposals--increased or remained level with the previous quarter's reading.
The current market conditions component of the RMI increased one point to 57 this quarter. A two-point gain was made among the categories of large additions as well as smaller remodeling jobs with readings of 56 and 58, respectively.
"The stabilization of the RMI in the mid-50s for more than a year demonstrates the slow, steady recovery of the housing industry that we expect to continue," said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. "The major headwind to a stronger recovery is a shortage of qualified labor and subcontractors in some parts of the county, making if difficult for remodelers to employ carpenters and finish projects as quickly and economically as many of their customers expect."

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- BuildZoom, the intelligent marketplace for remodeling and construction services, recently launched its new remodeling index with a finding that permitted remodeling activity in Seattle and New York has surpassed pre-crisis highs, while in Miami and Atlanta it remains well below the pre-crisis peak.
Drawing upon the company's database of approximately 45 million building permits from sources across the United States, the BuildZoom Remodeling Index tracks changes in permitted residential remodeling and maintenance activity in several major metropolitan markets on a monthly basis. Access the data HERE.
"We believe that the BuildZoom Remodeling Index, in tracking remodeling and maintenance of the existing housing stock, will provide a valuable new source of information to improve understanding of the housing market, a critical component of the economy," said Issi Romem, Chief Economist for BuildZoom. "There are US cities in which it is particularly difficult to expand the housing stock with new construction. In such cities, much of the action is in the upgrading and re-purposing of existing real estate. At BuildZoom, we hope to shed light on this aspect of the housing market, which has largely remained hidden until now."
As reported in the table below and shown in the graphs, the remodeling index shows that from the precrisis peak to the post-crisis trough, residential remodeling activity in New York and Seattle fell by approximately 25%. Remodeling activity in other parts of the country was hit much harder by the housing market crisis than in New York. In Miami and Atlanta, for example, residential remodeling activity plunged by 60% and 85%, respectively. Although both cities have seen a rise since then, neither has reverted to pre-crisis levels. As of September, residential remodeling activity in both Miami and Atlanta is still 55% below its pre-crisis peak.
"The housing markets in Miami and Atlanta were more buoyant than most before the crisis," said Romem. "Although the current rate of remodeling in Miami and Atlanta may be too low to maintain the housing stock in good repair over an extended period," he added, "we should not necessarily expect - or even want - remodeling activity to revert to its highest levels pre-crisis."

PANICKED motorists were left fuming after discovering their cars had been moved to another street by workmen who were repainting road markings.
Some drivers were on the verge of tears, believing their vehicles had been stolen after returning to find their vehicles missing from the Southampton street where they had left them.
In fact workmen had hoisted the cars on to a transporter and parked them in nearby streets to allow them to continue painting lines on the recently resurfaced road.
Drivers spent hours searching for their vehicles last night while making frantic calls to the police in a bid to find their cars.
After being reunited with them, drivers hit out at Southampton City Council asking how they were allowed to move their vehicles without warning and without any notification as to where they had moved them to.
Letters from the council had gone out to residents three days before the lines were due to be painted by Balfour Beatty, contractors for Southampton City Council.
The letter reads: We have made several attempts to complete this work but have found that motorists are removing the cones and parking cars in the spaces which has prevented work starting.
No waiting cones will mark the working area. Please be advised that any cars parked on the eastern side of Carlton Road between Wilton Avenue and Archers Road will be removed to the nearest available area, a record of which will not be noted.
"If your car is removed we will not be responsible for its safety and location or for any costs incurred by its relocation.
A spokesperson for the AA said that the action was pretty dramatic but that the council do have the right to remove cars if warning has been given.

A thirty-four-year-old local woman, who posed as an employment agent, was sentenced to jail for twenty four months and ordered to pay BND$22,920 in compensation to a group of people who paid her money to secure the services of maids.
Nazura Garip has to serve an additional eighteen months and two weeks in jail if she fails to pay the compensation, which is equivalent to the amount of deposit money she received from 11 clients between October 2011 and May 2013.
She convinced her clients to hand over the money after they selected maids from a list of biodata, which she had created. The deposits varied from BND$500 to BND$2,500.
Nazura used to pick foreign women, who were in the country on social visit passes, to send to her clients' houses to work as maids.
However, after a few days she would take them away on the pretext that the maids had to undergo a medical examination and apply for an identity card.
She used to replace the maids several times to convince her clients that she is an authorised maid agent. When Nazura could not find a foreign woman to work as a maid, she would stop contacting her clients.
A police report was lodged by one of her clients, who did not get a maid after paying money, which prompted a probe into the case.
Nazura had asked the court for a fine instead of a jail term, however, Magistrate Hajah Ervy Rahman ruled that imprisonment is justified as her crime is serious. BRUDIRECT.COM

A 44-year-old worker died and three others were injured Saturday afternoon when a brick facade fell from a West Lawn neighborhood building and injured workers, officials said.
The accident happened shortly before 1 p.m., at a single-story commercial building that houses several different businesses across the street from a Mexican restaurant in the 4100 block of West 63rd Street, Chicago Fire Department officials said.
Workers were making changes to the buildings facade when it came tumbling down. Stacks of fallen bricks remained piled on the sidewalk an hour after the accident, attracting a group of gawkers who stood in the parking lot across the street.
A 44-year-old man and a 30-year-old man were taken in serious-to-critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where the older man later died. A 44-year-old man was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in fair-to-serious condition. According to police officials, a 41-year-old man was injured but refused treatment.
Chicago Department of Buildings spokeswoman Mimi Simons said the work at the site was being performed by unlicensed contractors without building permits.
When a full inspection is complete, we expect that we will issue the building owner several violations, said Mimi Simons, spokeswoman for the Chicago Department of Buildings.
The building owner must remove the debris and erect a canopy for the public's safety, she said.
Ramona Lopez, 55, runs a bakery and a small shop selling religious artifacts and plants inside the building. Lopez, who is a tenant in the building, said the workers had been there for three days and described them as hard-working, humble people.
Lopez was working inside the building when she heard a loud crash and saw the accident, she said.
Fighting back tears, she said she was nervous about the future of the building and what its closure could mean for her family.

ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -
Since childhood, my love of the outdoors has always been a part of me. And as an adult, I hope to share that passion with my own children.
So, I offered this challenge to my family, to join me in exploring the hidden treasures and more popular gems Connecticut and the surrounding region have to offer.
From hiking to biking to kayaking, I hope my window into the outside world inspires you to explore as well.
DIVIDEND POND TRAILS
Rocky Hill
Connecticut is steeped in history and there is no clearer vision of this than at Dividend Pond Trails and Archaeological District in Rocky Hill. Located off of Old Forge Road, it is an ideal spot to explore the wooded 68-acre parcel which includes two ponds, trails, and industrial relics harkening as far back as the 1600s.
I settled on hiking the White Trail with my four-year-old, who tagged along for the 2.5-mile adventure. It begins at the parking lot and heads left down the trail past Lower Dividend Pond. But before starting, it pays to study the map at the kiosk at the park's entrance. It details the 10 archaeological gems that dot the property. All showcase the area's rich manufacturing heritage from the late 1600's to the mid 1880's.
And, as we soon discovered, the moment we strolled past the lower pond, some of these shadowy artifacts began to emerge. I found the presence of what was once a powerful industry built on factories and mills gels nicely with its natural surroundings.
As we rounded the pond and began to head uphill, the sound of the cascading waterfall soon greeted us. A dam dividing the lower pond from its upper pond neighbor is a dramatic, and worthwhile stop on this journey. Here, is where the true pieces of Rocky Hill's past come alive. Broken remnants of an 1884 manufacturing plant hugs the falls, with its looming columns and steep steps following the landscape down to the brook below.
