Of water and wort: Butcherknife Brewing Co.
Butcherknife Brewing Co. founders Mark Fitzgerald and Nathan Johansing began serving small home-brewed batches of beer in 2011, donating a large percentage to local charities and fundraisers. Now theyve opened up full time in a 4,000-square-foot brewery with a tap room complete with large tasting room and two garage doors opening to a patio at 2875 Elk River Road.
Right now, were producing 60 kegs every 20 days, Fitzgerald says, adding that their beer can be found at 21 locations in Steamboat, including 15 bars and restaurants downtown. But the majority of our beer is sold through bottles and cans.
The brewery prides itself on its recipes, attention to detail and good ol Steamboat water. Its the best water in Colorado, he says. Our location provides us first use off the Continental Divide, which means pure, clean water in the heart of every batch. It also helps to have someone with Johansings stripes on board; he earned his masters degree in brewing from the Siebel Institute of Technology and Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany.
Were thrilled to finally be able to deliver our beer to Steamboat, Fitzgerald says, adding that they plan to deliver more than 1,000 barrels in Butcherknifes first year of operation.
Brotherly beer: Storm Peak Brewing Co.
Its 3,832 vertical feet from the top of Storm Peak to the tasting room of its new namesake brewery at 1744 Lincoln Ave. west of town, and youll be thinking of its wares every turn of the way.
Founded by Colorado natives and brothers Wyatt and Tyler Patterson, the seven-barrel, three-employee brewhouse enjoyed its grand opening Aug. 2. Brewed in a 2,000-square-foot facility with tap room and bar up front, its beers explore a range of styles from light, crisp golden ale to darker black ale and a range of seasonal styles in between.
Were focused on tap room sales and creating an atmosphere where people can enjoy our product and spend some time with us, says Wyatt, whose other brother, Zach, and father, Erik, are also partners in the business. Our equipment is all in the open so people can see the materials and machinery in action.
So far, patrons enjoying the fruits of its tap room have kept any larger-scale distribution plans on hold. The company is selling every drop it makes before it even leaves the premises. Our plan is to grow organically, says Wyatt, who has brewed beer with his brother for years. Eventually well start distributing, but for now its hard enough just keeping enough on hand in the tap room. But were proud to call Steamboat home, and we love sharing our passion for beer with as many people as possible.

Outdoor solar lights and solar garden lights use rechargeable batteries to keep the lights lit at night. Each solar light has a solar panel that charges the rechargeable batteries by the sun during the day. Then at night when there is no sun the light turns on automatically and lights all night until dawn when the sun comes up again. It then turns itself off to restart the process all over again to charge during the day and light at night.
Most solar garden and outdoor solar lights use AA or AAA 1.2 V/600 mAh Ni-Cad (nickel cadmium) rechargeable batteries and some solar lights now come with AA 1.2V/1000 mAh NiMH (nickel metal hydride) rechargeable batteries.
The recommendations are to replace the batteries with the size and type that they original come with for the solar lights to work properly. Meaning that if its a AA you use a AA, if it is a 1.2V you use a 1.2V, if it is a Ni-Cd, use a Ni-Cd, if it is a NiMh use a NiMh.
As far as the mAh (MilliAmp Hours) factor is concerned, the difference here is about how much "juice" or power it will hold and how long it takes to charge it. A 600mAh to a 700mAh is a difference of 100mAh meaning it will have 100 more mAh of charge before it will run out of "juice" or power. The difference in charging length with your solar light will be a 600mAh will take approx. 7.2 hrs to charge and a 700mAh will take about 8.4 to charge. This is important to know when figuring how much direct sun will the solar panel get to recharge the batteries fully.
The rechargeable batteries for solar lights can last up to two years. When you begin to notice that the lights are weaker in brightness, begin to flicker or will not stay on for very long, then it becomes necessary to replace the batteries.
Lamp styles of solar lights vary but most allow for easy battery replacement. The batteries are normally located right under the solar panel.
Below are instructions for 4 different lamp styles of solar lights with pictures.
1. Standard Solar Garden Path Light
2. Solar Fence Post Cap Light
3. Solar Stake Light

Kenny provided the following, If Alabama wants to move forward it is going to have to free itself from the reputation of oppression it has built for almost two centuries. Some may call it freedom of speech but I see it as sedition and hate in an effort to continue keeping us on the bottom and the wrong side of history.
Eyrma responded with, Cowards sneaking around at night, scurrying about like rats to try and spread their fear, weakness, and self hatred. They really should get together and just leave this country and find one of their own.
Nate submitted, I believe there's a simple way of ending racism. Stop talking about. No one in this generation has been a slave. No one has experienced it in over 100 years. These groups such as the KKK, black panthers, Al Sharpton, etc. are keeping racism alive.
Lastly, Todd adds, They have the right to do this. It is in the constitution - for the most part. Just throw the flyer away; freedom of speech; for the record - I do not support them. This is America.

Landscape architecture is one of the world's most important professions.
Neglecting the architectures of the world's fast-changing landscapes will result in endless highways lined with endless blocks of endless tedium - dreary expanses of housing, industry, forestry and agriculture - our natural landscapes buried under repetitive building and planting. Instead, we should design the architecture of 'new landscapes for our new lives' (Fairbrother, N. 1970). The engineering of anti-landscapes should make way for an enlightened landscape architecture. With the death of engineer's modernism, it is time for a twenty-first century approach. See:- 20 Essays on Landscape Architecture & Urban Design + 750 illustrations.
Landscape architecture is the professional skill of composing man-made structures, including buildings and paving, with the natural landscape and with designs for landform, water and planting. See also: Definitions of landscape, landscape design, landscape architecture, landscape planning and EID.
Landscape architecture and garden design are separate arts with a shared and ancient heritage. The distinction is that gardens are usually enclosed and private. Landscape architecture is concerned with public goods and public spaces. Societies require landscape architectural policies for each land use category - to conserve what has value and and to create new public goods. See the policies for: urbanisation, greenways, cycling, forestry, mineral extraction, transport, water storage, river reclamation, new towns and green towns.
The name "landscape architecture" was invented by a Scotsman in 1828. It uses the ancient skill of garden designers (to compose landform with water, vegetation, structures and paving) and applies this skill to the man-made landscape. As Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe wrote in The landscape of man (1975): 'It is only in the present century that the collective landscape has emerged as a social necessity. We are promoting a landscape art on a scale never conceived of in history'. Landscape architecture is set fair to become the mother of the arts.
Landscape architects share with garden designers a concern for the planning and design of outdoor space. Like vets and doctors they have similar knowledge and similar skills. The key difference is that landscape architects normally work for public clients (business and governmental) while garden designers tend to work for homeowners. The range of work undertaken by landscape architects extends from detailed design to the broad scale landscape planning. It includes:
Though they require similar skills, the garden design and landscape architecture professions offer different career and jobs. Landscape architecture jobs often involve working with other professionals (engineers, planners, environmental consultants etc) and have typical career paths from assistant to associate to partner or director. Garden designers are more likely to be self-employed and to work with builders and craftsmen. The illustrations to the right are of landscape architecture.

Doris Dumrauf of Robinson believes what we do in our backyards can make a difference when it comes to helping preserve wildlife, and she has the pictures to prove it.
Ms. Dumrauf, who has received national awards from publications like Birds & Blooms magazine for her wildlife photography, doesnt have far to go when she wants to capture memorable photographs of birds, insects or flowers.
She can just stroll into her backyard, which was certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a wildlife habitat.
What we do in our yards does make a difference. We see that in our yard with more and more species attracted each year, Ms. Dumrauf said. With the help of her husband, Donald, she has made their backyard a welcoming destination for birds and pollinating insects like butterflies and bees.
It took about 10 years. We did it a little bit at a time, she said.
When she decided to pursue certification she found The Wildlife Federation requiresthat people interested in establishing a backyard habitat provide food, water and shelterplaces for birds and butterflies to raise their young.
To achieve her goal, Ms. Dumrauf and her husband planted a variety of native flowering plants that would bloom at various times through the spring and fall.
For water, she started out with a bird bath, but eventually installed a small pond, and for shelter the yard features a variety of trees and large bushes.
The federation is very interested in if you use pesticides, and want to know what you use instead to keep the garden organic, she said.
For alternatives to pesticides she uses mulch to suppress weed growth, weeds by hand, and relies on the many species of birds who visit her garden to help keep the insect population in check.
