Gameday: Key conference matchups highlight Week 10

    - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As the regular season continues to head down its final stretch, the landscape of college football remains in relative disarray. With Ole Miss loss to LSU, only three unbeaten teams are left, and numerous conference races are still completely up for grabs.

No. 10 TCU at No. 20 West Virginia

The Mountaineers and Horned Frogs will square off in a game featuring two top contenders in the race for the Big 12 title. Just like everybody predicted at the beginning of the year, right?

West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen has gone from being on the hot seat at the start of the season to being the frontrunner to be named Big 12 Coach of the Year. The Mountaineers, led by quarterback Clint Trickett, boast a lethal aerial attack, ranking ninth in the FBS with an average of 346.3 passing yards per game.

Meanwhile, TCUs offense is flourishing under new co-offensive coordinators Sonny Cumbie and Doug Meacham. The Horned Frogs rank sixth in the country with 360.1 passing yards per game and first in scoring at 50.4 points per game, including setting a school-record with 82 points last week against Texas Tech.

Both teams are absolutely rolling into their meeting in Morgantown, which means we should be in for a thrilling offensive shootout as they battle to stay near the top of the conference standings.

No. 4 Auburn at No. 7 Ole Miss

The SEC West remains heads and shoulders above everyone else in college football, and Ole Miss and Auburn will meet Saturday night in yet another game with major implications in the race for the division title.

The Rebels return home after an agonizing loss on the road to the LSU Tigers, in which they won the turnover battle 4-1. Head coach Hugh Freeze also made the controversial decision to try one more pass play with nine seconds remaining in the game, rather than try to kick a potential game-tying, 47-yard field goal then and there.

The result: a Bo Wallace interception sealed the Rebels fate and gave LSU renewed hope of contending for the SEC West title.

Michigan starts clearing land for Detroit-Windsor bridge

    - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Michigan is clearing land in Detroit ahead of the construction of a commuter bridge to Canada.

Gov. Rick Snyder said Wednesday that three blighted and abandoned publicly owned structures on South Post Street, South Crawford Street and Reid Street in Southwest Detroit are being cleared this week.

Other demolition will occur over the next several months to allow for construction of the New International Trade Crossing over the Detroit River between the city and Windsor, Ontario.

Snyder and Canada's minister of transport appointed representatives to the International Authority in July to oversee bridge construction.

Canada is paying most of the $2 billion project's cost and plans to recoup the money through tolls. Officials have said they hope to open the bridge in 2020.

Storage Wars challenge to benefit Goodwill

    - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

You never know what you will find at a Goodwill store.

And South Florida interior designers are proving that some of those finds are true treasurers for which you might pay good money to have in your home.

Top designers throughout the area are participating in the Storage Wars Designer Challenge, which involves five local interior designers who will be faced with a test of transforming empty storage units into beautiful, furnished rooms.

Each designer will decorate one storage unit each with items found only in Goodwill stores in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties.

The designers will retouch the items for each unit and the units will be available for viewing at STORE Self Storage & Wine Storage in Palm Beach Gardens on Nov 6. People can bid on the units during an event at the storage facility sponsored by Gulfstream Goodwill Industries. Viewing of the units will begin around 5:30 p.m. and tickets for the event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The cost includes two drink tickets, as well as tastings from the various restaurants that are catering the event.

There will also be Goodwill treasures, where tables will be filled with upscale Goodwill items for sale, such as jewelry and designer collectibles.

Each of the storage units will have a theme and the highest bidder on each unit will get to keep every single item inside. Goodwill trucks will deliver the items to their homes the night of the event.

What you see is what you get, said Loren Varvarigos, event planning manager for Gulfstream Goodwill Industries. Its unique and affordable.

Last year more than 300 people attended and $14,000 was raised. It was the first year for the Storage Wars Designer Challenge and each unit sold anywhere from $600 to $1,200. That price is a great deal, said Interior Designer and Artist Sean Rush.

With the design fees, they will easily be getting a $15,000 room for a few thousand dollars, Rush said of his unit.

On Your Side: Water warranty concerns

    - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

When water pipes burst, you could face costly repairs. It's a water emergency that can cause serious damage to your home's structure and electrical wiring.

FOX6 WBRC has received a number of questions from viewers asking about water line service program offers they are getting in the mail and online.

American Water Resources offers property owners home water line emergency services.

A Homeserve warranty flyer comes with the Birmngham Water Works Board logo and a warning about pipes installed before 1930.

Mark Kieskowski got one of the Homeserve letters.

"Is it legal for this company to mail out letters with the Water Works Board on the letterhead? Does the Birmingham Water Works know that this company is doing this?" he asked in an email to FOX6.

Birmingham Water Works Board spokeswoman Binnie Myles responded:

"We have a partnership with Homeserve to provide water line coverage to help protect old water pipes. We do not have a partnership with American Water Resources," Myles said.

FOX6 contacted the American Water Resources to get more information about what services the company offers. We will pass along the details when they become available.
