Green T Lawn Care | Lawn Fertilization, Weed Control, Lawn …

    - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Servicing the Northern Suburbs,North-Western Suburbs, and Western Suburbs of Chicago, IL.

The Beautiful Lawn You Always Dreamed Of With Green T Lawn Care As part of your community, we believe in going that extra mile to keep your lawn looking great. We are very serious when we say we have the highest quality lawn care services and weed control to produce the healthiest yards in the Chicagoland area.

Not sure if we cover your area? Click to view our service area page.

Our extensive lawn fertilization program is proven to create green healthy yards every time. We carefully select the appropriate fertilizer for each season. Additionally included with our fertilization program:

Fertilizers come in granular and liquid form. A granular fertilizer has many advantages over liquid fertilizers. The granular fertilizer is safer for lawn traffic since it doesnt require drying and it has a slower release which produces more lasting, even results.

Click Here to read more about Green Ts fertilizer and methods.

I saw a lawn sign advertising Aeration and seeding for the fall and I decided to give Green T a call and see if they were competitive in price. I have used other landscapers in the past for power raking, aeration and spring clean up's, so I was price shopping for services. My lot is small and not much to it so I was looking for a no non sense quote for aeration. I called and they did a Google Maps on my property and quoted me over the phone. In 4 days I had my lawn done by Green T..2 technicians got it done in 20 minutes and did a much thorough job than my past landscapers. Well done Cameron and team...I will use again in the future.

This is the first time that we've decided to hire a lawn care service and immediately we've seen the results. After the first application our lawn immediately "greened" up. We could notice a difference a few hours later, and while most lawns in the neighborhood we still brown and dormant, ours was already turning a dark green. Today, I requested my first "service call" to handle a few weeds popping up and was immediately scheduled for a visit w/in the next few days. My only complaint so far was the way that referrals are handled and that the credit would apply to an additional service or next year's cost... would have been nice to get the credit applied to this year's bill.

Had my air ducts cleaned from Green Tee a few weeks ago and I have to say I'm shocked at the difference. If you don't think getting your ducts done makes a difference trust me it is quite noticeable. This was a very thorough cleaning as the techs went vent to vent in the house sucking out debris that you could actually hear going through the hose. The techs were great as well, very friendly, professional and careful of their surroundings. My place contains many obstacles and delicate objects which they gave the utmost respect to when carrying the hose through the multi. level home. I couldn't be happier and will be calling on them for my dryer vent and carpets soon. Thanks!

Did you realize that lawns have tons of benefits? Not to mention the fact that a well-maintained lawn can significantly increase a homes value.

This website is designed to simplify every facet of lawn care. Learning all the aspects of lawn maintenance and how they interrelate improves your ability to care for your lawn. We present plans to grow the perfect lawn, but we also understand that this is not the mission for all home owners.

We discuss different types of lawn mowers, how often you should mow and the correct height to mow your lawn. Other important lawn care phases covered include site preparation, lawn soil testing, and the type of lawn grass to choose for your lawn.

A step-by-step guide is given for a do-it-yourself installation of a lawn irrigation system. You can expect to learn the ins and outs of watering your lawn within these pages.

Any lawn looks better than having no lawn at all, but a well-kept lawn is more than worth the effort. Well-kept lawns maintain a certain charm that attracts people for different reasons. Maybe it is the comfortable playground it provides for kids or the enchanting setting it gives to a landscape.

    Future Lawn Fanatic

The caliber of lawn maintenance depends a great deal on convenience and the amount of time you have to employ on yard care. When you apply lawn fertilizer or mow your lawn all depends on when time permits. These tasks do not have to deflate the pleasure obtained from lawn care. Many homeowners exude a clear pride in being able to grow an attractive lawn, but who can say whether the lawn connoisseur or the occasional weekend mower receives more enjoyment?

Organic lawn care has really made a splash in the last few years even though it isnt anything new. There are definitely some advantages to pursuing the natural way of growing a perfect lawn.

Lawn Care – Colorado State University

    - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lawn Care by T. Koski and V. Skinner * (3/12) Quick Facts... Proper watering can promote a deeply rooted, healthier turf. Let grass species and health, soil conditions, and weather conditions dictate irrigation practices, not the number of days between waterings. Mow bluegrass, ryegrass, fescue and wheatgrass to a height of 2 to 3 inches. Buffalo-grass and blue grama lawns can be mowed to this height, but also do well unmowed. Core cultivation is essential for all lawn areas, especially those that are thatchy or subject to high traffic.

Before planting a lawn, decide on the desired quality, how the lawn will be used, and how much time and money you are willing to invest. Have your soil tested. Contact your Colorado State University Extension county office for information on soil testing. Soil amendments can easily be added before planting. High quality sod or seed also helps ensure a satisfactory lawn.

Many factors influence lawn water requirements, and no two lawns are exactly alike. A healthy, high-quality bluegrass or ryegrass lawn may need up to 2.25 inches of water per week under hot, dry, windy summer conditions. It may require much less when the weather is cool or cloudy. Turf-type tall fescue may perform well with less water than a bluegrass lawn, if it can grow a deep root system. In many cases, however, tall fescue requires as much water as bluegrass to look good. Buffalograss and blue grama lawns can remain green for weeks without watering, even during the hottest summer weather.

Shady lawns and areas protected from the wind require less water over the growing season than more exposed turf. However, the roots of mature trees and shrubs also need water. You may have to water more in mature landscapes where the roots of many plants compete for water. Healthy turf, encouraged by proper mowing, fertilizing and cultivation, uses water more efficiently.

Each time you water the lawn, apply enough water to moisten as much of the root zone as possible. Use a soil probe or shovel to determine what the average rooting depth is in your lawn. If the roots grow down 6 inches deep, water so the soil is moistened to that depth.

If the soil is mainly clay, apply 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water to moisten the root zone to a 6-inch depth. A sandy soil can be moistened to 6 inches by as little as 1/2 inch. It is important to know not only how deep the turf roots grow, but also how deep your irrigation water penetrates. Watering too deeply, especially on sandy soils, wastes water and allows it to percolate past the root zone.

Based on the above, grass that grows on sandy soil must be watered more often than the same grass growing on clay or loam soils. Even after a thorough watering, sandy soils hold little plant-available moisture. They require more frequent irrigation with smaller amounts of water. Conversely, turf growing on a loamy-clay soil can be irrigated less frequently, with larger quantities of water. Watering less often means more efficient water use because of less loss to evaporation. It can also reduce the number of weeds that appear in the lawn.

With most soils, do not apply all the water in a short period of time. If applied too quickly, water often runs off of thatchy turf, from sloped areas, or from turf growing on heavy clay or compacted soils. In these cases, it is more effective to apply only a portion of the water and move the sprinkler or switch to another station to water another section of the lawn. This allows water to soak into the soil rather than run off. An hour or so later, apply the rest of the water. Core cultivation (aeration) can resolve some infiltration problems by reducing thatch and compaction. Wetting agents may enhance water movement into the soil, but they should not be considered a cure-all, especially when compaction or thatch are problems.

A sure sign that turf requires irrigation is a wilted appearance. One symptom is "footprinting," footprints on the lawn that do not disappear within an hour. This symptom is soon followed by actual wilting, where the turf takes on a grayish or purple-to-blue cast. If only a few such spots regularly appear in the same general location, spot water them to delay watering the entire lawn for another day or so. These indicator spots help predict when the entire lawn needs watering. A hardened or toughened lawn, attained through less frequent, deep irrigation, often withstands minor drought and generally has fewer disease problems. It is important, however, that the turf not be allowed to become overly drought-stressed between waterings. This weakens the turf and makes it more susceptible to insect and disease damage and to weed invasion.

During extended dry periods from late fall to spring, it may be necessary to water every four to six weeks if the ground is thawed and will accept water. Pay particular attention to exposed slopes, sites with shallow soil, and south- or west-facing exposures.

    AGs office sues lawn company

    - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A landscaping contractor accused of failing to deliver lawn care services and accepting hundreds of dollars in advance payments has been served with a lawsuit from Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.

Dewines office alleges that Israel Alex Barrett, of Cape Coral, Florida, violated consumer law by taking cash payments for work that was never completed. In the lawsuit, the Attorney General seeks consumer restitution and civil penalties.

The AGs office says at least 12 consumers have complained about the business. According to the lawsuit, Barrett had a principal place of business in Goshen, Ohio. He used various business names, including Pleasant Plain Lawn & Landscape, Alexs Elite Lawn Care, and Elis Lawn Care, which are not registered with the Ohio Secretary of State.

According to a release from the AGs office, heres how the business worked:

Barrett allegedly contacted homeowners door-to-door and accepted about $300 each from consumer. His six-step lawn treatment program was supposed to last from early spring to early winter. He reportedly offered a complimentary aeration and one free treatment as part of the offer.

Barrett reportedly closed his operation in Ohio in March, 2014. He notified customers that he was closing, but he did not find another landscaping contractor to apply the lawn treatments, nor did he provide refunds, according to the lawsuit.

We wont tolerate businesses that take advantage of Ohio consumers, Attorney General DeWine said. This contractor went door to door signing up customers but left town before providing the promised services.

The Attorney Generals lawsuit was filed in the Warren County Court of Common Pleas. It charges Barrett with violating Ohios Consumer Sales Practices Act and Home Solicitation Sales Act by failing to deliver services, performing shoddy work, and failing to provide proper notice of consumers right to cancel a home solicitation sale.

The AGs office encourages consumers who believe they have been treated unfairly to contact them at 800-282-0515 or visit ohioattorneygeneral.gov.

Lawn mower – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    For agricultural mowers see Mower.

A lawn mower is a machine that uses one or more revolving blades to cut a lawn to an even height. The blades may be powered either by hand; pushing the mower forward to operate the mechanical blade(s), or may have an electric motor or an internal combustion engine to spin their blades. Some mowers also include other abilities, like mulching or collecting their clippings.

Two main styles of blades are used in lawn mowers. Lawn mowers employing a single blade that rotates about a single vertical axis are known as rotary mowers, while those employing a multiple blade assembly that rotates about a single horizontal axis are known as cylinder or reel mowers.

There are several types of mowers, each suited to a particular scale and purpose. The smallest types are pushed by a human user and are suitable for small residential lawns and gardens. Riding mowers are larger than push mowers and are suitable for large lawns. The largest multi-gang mowers are mounted to tractors and are designed for large expanses of grass such as golf courses and municipal parks.

A transition from traditional hand-guided or ride-on mowers to automatic electric mowers is beginning to take place, with the growth in robotic lawn mower sales of 2012 being 15 times the growth in sales of the traditional styles.[1] At current rates of growth automated lawn mowers are set to soon reach the point of outselling traditional mowers in some regions.

The first lawn mower was invented by Edwin Budding in 1827 in Thrupp, just outside Stroud, in Gloucestershire, England. Budding's mower was designed primarily to cut the grass on sports grounds and extensive gardens, as a superior alternative to the scythe, and was granted a British patent on August 31, 1830.[2]

Budding's first machine was 19 inches (480mm) wide with a frame made of wrought iron. The mower was pushed from behind. Cast iron gear wheels transmitted power from the rear roller to the cutting cylinder, allowing the rear roller to drive the knives on the cutting cylinder; the ratio was 16:1. Another roller placed between the cutting cylinder and the main or land roller could be raised or lowered to alter the height of cut. The grass clippings were hurled forward into a tray-like box. It was soon realized, however, that an extra handle was needed in front to help pull the machine along.Overall, these machines were remarkably similar to modern mowers.[3]

Two of the earliest Budding machines sold went to Regent's Park Zoological Gardens in London and the Oxford Colleges.[4] In an agreement between John Ferrabee and Edwin Budding dated May 18, 1830, Ferrabee paid the costs of enlarging the small blades, obtained letters of patent and acquired rights to manufacture, sell and license other manufacturers in the production of lawn mowers. Without patent, Budding and Ferrabee were shrewd enough to allow other companies to build copies of their mower under license, the most successful of these being Ransomes of Ipswich, which began making mowers as early as 1832.[3]

His machine was the catalyst for the preparation of modern-style sporting ovals, playing fields (pitches), grass courts, etc. This led to the codification of modern rules for many sports, including for football, lawn bowls, lawn tennis and others.[5]

It took ten more years and further innovations to create a machine that could be drawn by animals, and sixty years before a steam-powered lawn mower was built. In the 1850s, Thomas Green & Son of Leeds introduced a mower called the Silens Messor (meaning silent cutter), which used a chain to transmit power from the rear roller to the cutting cylinder. These machines were lighter and quieter than the gear driven machines that preceded them, although they were slightly more expensive.[3] The rise in popularity of lawn sports helped prompt the spread of the invention. Lawn mowers became a more efficient alternative to the scythe and domesticated grazing animals.

My lawn mower stopped working mid-mow. Since it was the summer I thought I would be forever for a service company to fix my mower. Found the perfect answer - Bruce the lawn mower guy! Brought my mower to him after work one day, gave me a quick, honest, free quote. Then the best part - told me it would be done next week! Even better - he delivered the fixed mower within the week at less money than I even expected. The test - week and a half of heavily fertilized Bermuda. Took two passes just because of the length but the mower was back to normal.

Bruce picked up my John Deere mower and then dropped it off once it was repaired. He was always here exactly when he said he would be and he was very knowledgable about small engine repair. He was able to diagnose the problem at my house, but needed to take it to his shop so he had access to all the necessary tools. I highly recommend Bruce for mower repairs!

No money to start a business? No problem. Try these five options

    - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

You might be limited to a strict budget when you want to start a business, but that doesnt mean you dont have any options. It is possible to start a business with very little money, if you have the right combination of skills, work ethic and marketing know-how.

According to Chris Guillebeau, author of The $100 Startup, To succeed in a business project, especially one youre excited about, it helps to think carefully about all the skills you have that could be helpful to others and particularly about the combination of those skills.

Follow these simple guidelines to start a business when you have little to no money.

    1. Make something. Yes, making something does take an initial cost in supplies, but oftentimes, these products can be sold for many times over their actual cost. What you decide to make is up to you, but there are several places you can sell your handmade options online:

Many business owners sell their products on multiple platforms to get the most exposure possible. It is important, however, to make sure your inventory stays updated on all sites you have a storefront on. If you want to learn about more resources for selling homemade items, check out this Lifehacker post.

    2. Resell something. If you dont want to make anything (or you dont consider yourself a creative person), many business owners have grown large businesses just be reselling products that have already been made. This can be done through a variety of ways or channels:

    3. Sell your services. One way to start a business with little to no startup capital is to sell your services, instead of a physical product. Theres a huge variety of services you can offer, depending on your background and interests.

Some will require advanced degrees, such as accounting, while others require little more than a working knowledge of how its done (such as babysitting, lawn mowing or personal assistance).

Because you are selling your services, you will need a branding plan to make sure your name and company gets in front of the people who may need the service. Some places that are free for promoting your services include Fiverr, Craigslist, Elance, Taskrabbit and Skillshare.

Its also useful to have a website to show examples of your work, list your experience, and blog about your industry to draw visitors. If you want to learn more about branding and online marketing, check outBuffer s social-media blog, Hubspot s blog, Content Marketing Institute and CopyPress.

    MLA Applications

We are still accepting applications for the Master of Landscape Architecture program.

Eight University of Minnesota members of the ASLA-MN Student Chapter visited Toronto, Canada August 24 through August 29th.

Although Toronto is double in size compared to the Twin Cities, there are important similarities, including a cold climate, post industrial waterfront urban city. It boasts of new world-renown landscape architecture projects by leading international firms.

The students visited these projects, varying in scale, form, and type, rural to urban. They researched these sites prior and made a booklet including the history of Toronto, and background information on each site to be visited.

Firm and site tours by professionals added to the excitement of the trip. Janet Rosenberg, from Janet Rosenberg & Associates, gave the students a firm tour and explained her HTO Park, one of the waterfront projects the students had visited. Roberto Chiotti, principal of Larkin Architects, generously offered a tour of his off-the-grid straw bale house, and his expertise as he walked the waterfront with the students. Dennis Winters, principal of Tales of the Earth, gave a tour of Evergreen Brick Works Park and explained his recent project associated with the Don River Valley.

Check out the blog the students kept each day: http://www.aslamnsc.tumblr.com.

Thanks to the many donors who made this trip possible: ASLA-MN, Metropolitan Design Center, donors to the GoFundMe website, and all who participated in the two fundraisers at Damon Farber & Associates and the lovely home of Chris Behringer.

On Sunday, March 10 students of the University of Minnesota MLA program made their Netherlands rendezvous to commence their field studies for The Cultural Ecology of Water in the Netherlands traveling studio. With backpacks and bikes, sketchbooks and snapshots, for the next four weeks students are immersed (get it?) in a direct experience of how the Dutch landscape is a symbiosis of culture and water. Follow their blog to experience daily narrative and photographic accounts of their progress.

Nearly three years after traveling to Itasca State Park and commencing their MLA program of study, 25 MLA students are currently focused on their capstone studio projects. The spring semester LA8555 Capstone Studio is the culmination of the MLA educational process and is the first step in transition from the academy to a professional role in Landscape Architecture. The studio allows students an opportunity to pursue an independent course of inquiry into a variety of contemporary issues and project sites, of their choosing, within the discipline of Landscape Architecture.
