Five to seven times a day, the air in your home circulates through the air ducts of your HVAC heating and cooling system, carrying with it the dust and debris of everyday living.
Your furnace filter catches much of the stuff, but neglect, remodeling projects, or shoddy duct installation can lead to a buildup of gunk inside your ductwork that threatens the efficient functioning of your system.
Are Dirty Ducts Hazardous to Your Health?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asserts no studies have proven that duct cleaning prevents health problems. Also, there isnt proof that dirty ductwork increases dust levels inside homes.
But some people are more sensitive to airborne dust and pet dander than others. If your nose is getting itchy just thinking about what might lurk in your ducts, the $300 to $600 it costs to clean a 2,000-sq.-ft. home is a worthwhile investment. But before you reach for the phone, take a good look to see if your ducts are dirty.
Get the Picture
Wouldnt it be handy if you could take an incredible journey through your ductwork to see if cleaning is needed? Using a pocket digital camera equipped with a flash, you can come close. Simply remove a floor register, reach as far as you can into the duct (dont drop your camera!), and take a couple of shots.
If theres gunk within a few feet of the register, take heart. Its easy to snake a vacuum cleaner hose into the duct and remove the stuff. However, if you see a long trail of junk and a thick coat of dust beyond what your vacuum can reach, your house may be a candidate for professional cleaning.
Look for These Symptoms
In addition, recent construction inevitably creates dust you dont want in circulation.

Gov. Pat Quinn Monday announced the completion of the first phase of the Illinois Route 59 reconstruction project on the border of Naperville of Aurora.
Monday marked the completion of retaining wall work along the projects 3.4-mile roadway expansion.
The Naperville area has long needed a significant expansion of Route 59 and the improved Interstate 88 interchange for better access to and from the expressway, Quinn said. This is a fast-growing region and we need to make sure the infrastructure is in place to keep up that momentum and drive the economy forward.
The expansion of Route 59 is essential to our community, Naperville Mayor A. George Pradel said. This highway is a critical lifeline through Naperville and Aurora. Route 59 brings moms and dads to and from jobs that support their families, and it gives businesses a convenient location to open their doors to support the local economy. By improving Route 59 and the Interstate 88 interchange, we will improve the quality of life for area residents, visitors and businesses.
Monday marked the completion of construction that began in the summer of 2013 including 22 new concrete retaining walls, 13 new noise abatement walls totaling more than 6,000 feet in length, utility relocations and reconstruction of the Wabaunsee Creek box culvert. These features were a critical part of the work that had to be in place before the rest of the project could proceed, state officials said.
As the walls were constructed, crews began work on the roadway portions of the project, which should be complete in the fall of 2015.
Route 59 is being reconstructed for 3.4 miles from Aurora Avenue/New York Street to south of Ferry Road. The work is providing three lanes in each direction on Route 59 separated by a raised median, plus new traffic signals at all major intersections including New York Street/Aurora Avenue, Liberty Street/Jefferson Avenue, Meridian Parkway/Glacier Park Avenue, North Aurora Road and Diehl Road.
Sdewalks and bicycle paths are being constructed along the entire project length and a storm sewer pump station is being upgraded to handle the additional stormwater drainage the wider road will create.
The average daily traffic along Route 59 is 49,700 vehicles per day.
The project also includes the reconstruction of the existing interchange at Route 59 at I-88 with a new Diverging Diamond Interchange configuration. This will offer increased capacity and reduced accident potential at the interchange, state officials said. The work includes construction of two new dual bridge structures over I-88 in addition to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the interchange ramps.

PennDOT set advanced signs Oct. 10 announcing that a section of Route 225, Peters Mountain Road, on the north side of the mountain will close on Monday, Oct. 27, as construction crews begin work to build a retaining wall in Halifax Township, Dauphin County.
Earlier this year, PennDOT Dauphin County maintenance crews installed drainage pipes and conducted repairs on Route 225 in an attempt to stabilize the failing slope along the roadway shoulder. The majority of the repairs were successful. However two specific areas continue to show signs of movement and must be addressed before the roadway is resurfaced. In the meantime, a $4,065,225 contract was awarded on June 19 to Blooming Glen Contractors, Inc. of Blooming Glen, Bucks County. The contract includes drainage updates, roadway base repair, guiderail work, removal of the top layer of asphalt, and bituminous resurfacing on Route 225 in Middle Paxton and Halifax townships. PennDOT and the contractor agreed to delay resurfacing until next spring and add work to construct a retaining wall to address the areas of concern. The contractor will be working six days a week in 10-12 hour shifts in order to excavate, remove guiderail, build a retaining wall and rebuild the roadway. As winter sets in, work will halt and the contractor will return in the spring to resurface the roadway from Route 325 to Route 147. All work under this construction contract is scheduled to be completed by the end of summer 2015.
PennDOT advises motorists that starting Oct. 27, Route 225 will be closed to through traffic for at least four weeks. Until then, traffic should use the detour which follows Route 147, U.S. 322, and Route 325. Appalachian Trail hikers will be able to access the trail at the top of the south side of Peters Mountain. On average, nearly 11,200 vehicles travel this section of Route 225 every day. To avoid delays, motorists should allow for additional time in their travel plans or seek an alternate route.

A skateboard is a type of sports equipment used primarily for the activity of skateboarding. It usually consists of a specially designed maplewood board combined with a polyurethane coating used for making smoother slides and stronger durability.
A skateboard is propelled by pushing with one foot while the other remains on the board, or by pumping one's legs in structures such as a bowl or half pipe. A skateboard can also be used by simply standing on the deck while on a downward slope and allowing gravity to propel the board and rider. If the rider positions their right foot forward, he/she is said to ride "goofy;" if the rider positions their left foot forward, he/she is said to ride "regular." If the rider is normally regular but chooses to ride goofy, he/she is said to be riding in "switch," and vice versa. A skater is typically more comfortable pushing with their back foot; choosing to push with the front foot is commonly referred to as riding "mongo".
Recently, electric skateboards have also appeared. These no longer require the propelling of the skateboard by means of the feet; rather an electric motor propels the board, fed by an electric battery.
There is no governing body that declares any regulations on what constitutes a skateboard or the parts from which it is assembled. Historically, the skateboard has conformed both to contemporary trends and to the ever-evolving array of stunts performed by riders/users, who require a certain functionality from the board. Of course, the board shape depends largely upon its desired function. Longboards are a type of skateboard with a longer wheelbase and larger, softer wheels.
Skateboards have three axes. The tail axis (running from nose to tail), the central axis (running straight down through the center of the board), and the short axis (running from the width of the board, perpendicular to the tail axis).
The two main types of skateboards are the longboard and the shortboard. The shape of the board is also important: the skateboard must be concave to perform difficult tricks.[1]
The following descriptions cover skateboard parts that are most prevalent in popular, modern forms of skateboarding. Many parts exist with exotic or alternative constructions. A traditional complete skateboard consists of the deck (often with griptape applied on top to enhance traction), trucks (with urethane bushings), wheels (with sealed bearings), bushings and nuts and bolts to fasten the truck and wheel assembly to the bottom of the deck. Older decks also included plastic parts such as side, tail, and nose guards.
Modern decks vary in size, but most are 7 to 10.5inches (17.78 to 26.67 centimeters) wide. Wider decks can be used for greater stability when transition or ramp skating. Skateboard decks are usually between 28 and 33inches (71.12 and 83.82 centimetres) long. The underside of the deck can be printed with a design by the manufacturer, blank, or decorated by any other means.
The longboard, a common variant of the skateboard, has a longer deck. One of the first deck companies was called "Drapped" taken from Jonny's second name. "Old school" boards (those made in the 1970s80s or modern boards that mimic their shape) are generally wider and often have only one kicktail. Variants of the 1970s often have little or no concavity, whereas 1980s models have deeper concavities and steeper kicktails.[citation needed]
Grip tape is a sheet of paper or fabric with adhesive on one side and a surface similar to fine sand paper on the other. Grip tape is applied to the top surface of a board to allow the rider's feet to grip the surface and help the skater stay on the board while doing tricks. Grip tape is usually black, but is also available in many different colors such as pink, yellow, checkered, camo, and even clear. Often, they have designs die-cut to show the color of the board, or to display the board's company logo.
