Kitchen Remodel: 10 survival tips to get you through the process

    - October 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Here's the deep dark secret that the kitchen-remodeling websites and magazines don't want you to know: Between the before and after photos, you live in a house with no kitchen. For weeks, more likely months.

And that's not a pretty picture.

My own kitchen remodel involved time on a ladder scraping away popcorn, doing my own painting and cabinet assembly and literally herding cats, not to mention all the major and minute decisions I had to make.

(Photo-illustration by Jeff Neumann, The Denver Post; photos: Thinkstock by Getty Images)

Here are the 10 survival tips I learned along the way.

    1. Undergo triage

When you pack up, sort your kitchen gear into three categories: storage; temporary kitchen; and toss/donate/recycle. This task can be done over time, with the final items leaving the kitchen the night before demolition begins.

Give the boxes going to storage detailed labels so you can locate things you discover you need later because in a remodeling process, you never know when "later" might be. Put them somewhere safe, but not the garage (see Tip 8).

    2. Set up a temporary kitchen

My fridge moved into the dining room, where it was joined by the toaster oven, electric kettle and countertop microwave. Your small appliances may include an electric grill, skillet or slow cooker.

San Diego designer creates dream kitchens

    - October 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

At todays American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) San Diego Kitchen and Bath tour, San Diegans will be able to see the work of some of the countys most creative designers.

One of the stops features a rustic, Zen-style kitchen in Del Mar by Tatiana Machado-Rosas.

(The self-guided ASID tour runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., see site for details.)

Machado-Rosas, 40, who works at Jackson Design & Remodeling, was born and raised in Mexico City, but spent some of her childhood years in Europe where the varied cultures and architecture inspired her aesthetic.

Machado-Rosas, who moved to San Diego from Tijuana in 1994, explains her passion for design and kitchens.

Q: Why should the general public be interested in the ASID San Diego Kitchen and Bath tour?

A: It gives the public the chance to see in person, instead of on TV or the computer, the latest trends and technology in kitchen and bath design. Homeowners that may be looking for an interior designer for a future project get to meet nine designers and see their portfolios. Even if you are not planning a home remodel yet, it is just a fun, inspiring way to spend the day with friends touring beautiful San Diego homes.

Q: When did you become interested in design?

A: My parents noticed that I was enthusiastic about drawing at a very early age, 3 or 4 years old. They always encouraged me to explore art and take art classes. My mom, a physician by profession, has a natural talent for decorating and she would always rearrange the furniture and accessories at home. I was fascinated watching her. One day, when I was 7, I told her that I wanted to help her make the room look prettier. When I got my own bedroom at age 8, I started paying attention to the look of my room the colors, furniture and accessories. Since then Ive never stopped.

Q: Why are you drawn to kitchens?

MoistureShield Debuts New Brazilian Chestnut at 2014 DeckExpo

    - October 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Springdale, Ark. (PRWEB) October 24, 2014

MoistureShield is expanding on its innovative capstock line, MoistureShield Pro, by including a third color, Brazilian Chestnut. Known as one of the hardest and most durable woods on the market, MoistureShield Pros Brazilian Chestnut is similar to its namesake both in performance and aesthetics. The composite decking boards feature a vast range of rich color variations from a light understated brown to sultry deep brown hues. Each board provides a unique blend of coloring, finishing every deck with unrivaled warmth and elegance.

Featured at DeckExpo booth 3005, MoistureShield will showcase the new Brazilian Chestnut color along with the other two colors from their Pro line: Graystone and Ipe. With a full capstock line, MoistureShield can help builders meet homeowners needs for both sophistication and durability.

Homeowners continue to prize dark hardwoods as a mark of distinction and luxury in their outdoor living spaces, said Brent Gwatney, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for MoistureShield. Brazilian Chestnut will offer deck builders the ability to fulfill their customers aesthetic desires, while being comforted in knowing that they are providing them with a product built to last.

The three colors in the MoistureShield Pro line are backed by the industry-leading Lifetime Warranty that MoistureShield is known for, and are protected even further with a 25-year fade and stain warranty.

MoistureShield Pro is an advanced decking product that combines a moisture-resistant composite core with an extra layer of protection in a one-of-a-kind cap to increase fade, stain, scratch and slip resistance. As with other MoistureShield boards, the Pro line is so durable it can be installed on the ground, in the ground or even underwater without voiding the warranty. Each MoistureShield composite deck board is available in 12, 16 and 20 lengths with coordinating trim boards, as well as in two profile options: grooved and square edged.

MoistureShields Pro line is the newest addition to its family of decking products that also includes the Vantage Collection and Essential Collection. All MoistureShield products are manufactured through a unique encapsulation process that defends the boards against moisture all the way to the core. With 95% total recycled content, including recycled plastic grocery bags and packaging film, MoistureShield is also an environmentally responsible choice.
