NASHUA Emergency crews were busy dealing with a variety of flooding problems during Thursday's heavy rainfall, including a collapsed retaining wall, an overflowing detention pond and a sidewalk sinkhole.
The city's street department and wastewater department responded to about 20 areas in Nashua during the height of the nor'easter, which forced the closure of some roadways.
Cleveland Street at Almont Street was closed on Thursday when three vehicles became stuck in high water, according to local police. Vine Street was also a problematic area for motorists as about three-feet of water pooled in the vicinity of 112-117 Vine St., said emergency officials.
We definitely have some flooding in the city, Justin Kates, director of Nashua's Office of Emergency Management, said Thursday afternoon. Thankfully we were able to get some lead time on this storm, so we got crews out early to clear storm drains in advance. Unfortunately, we couldn't get to them all.
Significant roadway flooding was reported at Murphy Drive and Northeastern Boulevard, and vehicles were encouraged to avoid that area of the city on Thursday.
There was a detention pond overflow at Rivier University, and a sinkhole in the sidewalk near 7 Fletcher St.
Kates said a low retaining wall in the downtown area behind Portland Pie Company caused minor concerns when it collapsed Thursday morning. The wall fell into the railbed, so PanAm will be working on it. The fire department did go out there and deemed there was no life safety hazard, said Kates. Fortunately, that is not a heavily traveled area.
Roadway flooding also occurred on Sargent Avenue, Fairmount Street, Concord Street, Summer Street, Arlington Street, Main Dunstable Road and other local roads.
Kates said this is a challenging time of year when it rains, as leaves are blocking storm drains and it often comes the number one cause for urban flooding.
It really makes a mess. Thankfully, we know the problem areas in the city and we sent crews out in advance to help alleviate some of the issues, said Kates. All of the crews are out and it is all hands on deck.

CALHOUN COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -
A church on the outskirts of Anniston will repair a Hobson City ball field as part of what they call the "100 Men Challenge."
The event will involve a number of things, including helping the elderly, working at a boys home and even handing out gifts at a shopping center.
But members of Cornerstone Church will also do considerable construction and landscape work at Noble Mason Field, a Hobson City football stadium that has fallen into disrepair. The field hasn't been used in two years.
Some members have already worked on the field during the past week, including repair work on two roofs, one each on the rest room building and a concession stand.
Two electricians who are church members are also looking into a scoreboard that had been damaged by lightning.
Other work will including the striping of the field, which was home to the Hobson City Vikings. The coaches have been putting the football players in vans and taking them out of town to other fields to play.
The church's pastor says they've gotten a lot of support from Hobson City mayor Alberta McCrory and the council for the work they've done, and will do tomorrow, for the ball field.
"It's always great to help people. And this is really what this is about, especially when we found out that some of these great coaches were busing some of these kids into different cities to be able to play the game that they love so much," says Cornerstone Church pastor Michael Cox.
"We thought, what a great way to do it."

Fellowship Baptist Church is celebrating 170 years this Sunday October 26, 2014. Pastor John Outlaw, who has been the pastor of the church since 1994, holds a couple historic photos. He holds a picture of Rev. Alonzo L. Prisoc who was Rev. from 1899-1900 then 1906-1911, left and a picture of the church and the congregation from the 30's. The membership of the church is around 200.
The Rev. John Outlaw said he will be wearing his cowboy boots to church this Sunday. In fact, many members of the congregation will be dressing up in period costume to celebrate the 170th anniversary of Fellowship Baptist Church, one of Marion County's oldest churches still in existence.
Sunday's celebration is free and open to the public. The 10 a.m. service will include special music and a drama depicting many humorous and tender moments in the early days of the church.
Someone will represent John Tucker, one of the founding pastors, said Outlaw. And we'll re-enact some of the more comical things that took place back then, like when the hogs got under the church. That's my favorite little story.
Outlaw said the church has stood on the same 10 acres since the raising of its first building, constructed out of wood planks, in 1844. The initial congregation had 21 members, he said.
It was a church before Florida became a state in 1845, and before the Southern Baptist Convention was formed that same year, Outlaw said. The first building was destroyed by fire in 1860, the same year President Lincoln was elected. They stayed without a building for 25 years and met in homes or wherever. Of course, that was during the time of the Civil War and then the American Indian wars.
In 1885, the congregation built a second sanctuary, but it also was destroyed, probably by fire, Outlaw said.
We know that the one they had prior to 1948 was a shotgun-style building, he said. In 1948, they built the previous worship center. We remodeled it last year and use it for Sunday school space, youth ministry and our food ministry that provides for people in the community.
Outlaw, who came to the church 20 years ago, said the current 225-seat multi-purpose worship center was completed in 2004. About 140 people attend the church.
Even with the new construction, the aura of history prevails, Outlaw said.

Chalmers Church planningcondo development
By Mark Newman, News Staff
Facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in future renovation and upkeep costs and a shrinking congregation, Chalmers Presbyterian Church is moving forward with a unique plan, possibly the first of its kind for a church in Canada, aimed at keeping the church on Mountain Park Avenue for many years to come.
Were planning on incorporating our church into a housing community, said Reverend Dr. Victoria Eldridge, the minister at Chalmers which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2005.
For the past year church officials have been working with a local architectural firm on a plan that would essentially see the church hand over its land on Mountain Park near Cliff Avenue to a developer who would demolish the two church buildings and replace them with a multi-million dollar condominium complex that could rise as high as 12 stories with underground parking.
The church in return would get and own most of the space on the first two floors that would become the new Chalmers Church.
Were hoping this isnt going to cost us any money, said Eldridge, who noted the complex will not be any higher than The Madison; a nearby 11 storey condo building that was completed in 2008.
Eldridge noted the project is still in the preliminary stage and the exact size and scope of the development, including the number of condos, has not been determined.
Unlike the current church buildings, the new church facilities would be completely accessible.
The first floor will include the sanctuary with portable seating for 150 along with a couple of meeting rooms and possibly a coffee shop.
