    West Toledo Library retains charm

Editor's note: This version of the article corrects the operating hours of the West Toledo Library.

A steady stream of patrons with young children and others, many toting books and DVDs, have been in and out of the West Toledo Library this week as the branch reopened after being closed for more than a year.

With its original multicolored slate roof, tudor-style architecture, and exposed wood support beams, the branch in the Five Points-Library Village neighborhood is among the oldest in the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library system

The library at 1320 Sylvania Ave. now ranks among the most technologically advanced branches in the county system and offers patrons renovated, enhanced gathering space and a 2,500-square-foot addition for the new childrens section.

Julie Bursten, branch manager, said parents and children lined up outside the door, eagerly waiting to get through the new back entrance on the first day Monday.

After we changed the sign on the door on Monday to open, there were maybe 10 kids and their parents in here, she said.

Once inside, they got to play, read, and learn among the enchanted forest of one-of-kind sculptured trees, adorned with tiny gnome doors, dragon tail, snails, and birds in the childrens area.

Everyone who comes in wants to know if the doors open. Its very cool, Ms. Bursten said about the eight-foot tall pieces.

San Fransokyo architects built a new world for Disneys Big Hero 6

    - October 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Oct. 24, 2014 | 12:00 p.m.

Before the directors of the new Walt Disney Animation movie Big Hero 6 settled on their story, they created the world in which its set: a jammed, vibrant place called San Fransokyo.

A mash-up of San Francisco and Tokyo set in the not-too-distant future, San Fransokyo is a dense, hilly city with cable cars and cherry blossoms, Victorian row houses and glittering neon billboards.

The filmmakers idea never stated in the film is that in a parallel universe after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the city split off and an influx of Japanese immigrants helped rebuild it.

San Fransokyo is a quintessential example of the craft of world building, the process of constructing a wholly imaginary universe for films, television, video games and other media, that involves creating the look of everything from buildings, vegetation and vehicles to the way light refracts and how people look, move and talk.

A version of production design on steroids, world building is enjoying increasing recognition as an art form thanks to the ambitious worlds created for such fantastical live action films as Avatar and the Harry Potter series, and video games like Grand Theft Auto and Halo.

Though science fiction films as far back as Star Wars and Blade Runner depicted created worlds, ever-more sophisticated computer graphics programs, including one Disney developed in-house and is debuting with Big Hero 6, have enabled creators to bring more densely designed worlds to the screen.

Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams from a loose adaptation of a little-known Marvel Comic by Duncan Rouleau and Steven Seagle, Big Hero 6, which opens Nov. 7, follows a rebellious robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada (voiced by Ryan Potter) and a guileless, inflatable healthcare robot named Baymax (Scott Adsit) as theyre drawn together by a devastating event. Four other motley heroic characters Hiro meets in the science lab round out the team of 6 in Big Hero 6.

The film marks the first time another division of Disney has taken on a Marvel property since the media giant acquired the comic book company behind Captain America and The Avengers in 2009.

Strategy to help local businesses deal with Tsawwassen First Nation malls

    - October 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Delta is bringing in a consultant to develop a strategy to ensure long-term sustainability of the local business sector in the face of a pair of massive shopping malls taking shape at the Tsawwassen First Nation.

Construction is underway on the two malls, Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons, which, when complete, will feature almost 1.8 million square feet of retail space. The malls are expected to open in the spring of 2016.

There have been concerns about the impacts the development would have on the local business community, which is made up of mostly small, locallyowned operations.

"At this time of great change and uncertainty for the business community, Delta should assist the business communities in developing a strategy to ensure these vital pieces of the community are sustainable for the longterm," Delta CAO George Harvie stated this week in a report to Delta council.

Harvie told civic politicians other cities are facing similar issues.

Once hired by Delta, the consultant will work with the municipality, Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association, Ladner Business Association, Delta Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Delta to develop the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy.

The aim of the strategy will be to provide advice on what Delta and the business community can do to ensure the sector is sustainable.

Harvie said Delta would expect a report from the consultant within three months of starting the project.

Construction is well underway on the two malls. Pre-loading began in January and construction of the superstructure started this summer.

Ivanhoe Cambridge is behind Tsawwassen Mills, which will include approximately 1.2 million square

Architects propose Sugar Grove senior living apartment

    - October 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SUGAR GROVEThe Sugar Grove Village Board on Tuesday heard from Thad Gleason, owner of Gleason Architects P.C., as he presented a senior living development plan for Senescent Healthcare, LLC of Lincolnshire.

Gleason Architects P.C., an architectural company located in Sugar Grove, has extensive experience in services for health care facilities.

Gleason explained the details surrounding the new proposed Sugar Grove senior living apartment, which will be located at the southwest corner of Division Drive and Park Avenue.

This will be a assisted living care facility with a memory care component, Gleason said. Its not a nursing home. There are 71 units on 74,000 square feet on a 23-acre lot. Residents will receive three meals a day and will have access to exercise programs, laundry services, social activities, transportation services, a hair salon, clinic/medical office and more. Bathing, dressing, and 24-hour security are included.

According to Gleason, there are a number of rooms included within the facility, such as a dining room, bistro and coffee shop area, commercial kitchen, laundry service room, movie theater, spa, activity room, multi-purpose room and more.

The parking lot of the senior living apartment and its number of parking spots was a topic of discussion during the board meeting.

Parking is generally for guests and employees since residents dont drive, Gleason said.

Village Board trustee Rick Montalto brought up his concern about limited parking at the facility.

Im concerned about the parking situation, Montalto said. I can see people needing cars. With visitors on holidays, getting service people and ambulance people in and out, Im concerned there isnt enough parking spots when you go down to 40 spots.

Community Development Director Walter Magdziarz explained the reasoning behind what could be a limited amount of parking spots.

    Victoria Day opening for Aquatarium

    - October 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The people behind the Aquatarium now have a firm date for the facility's spring 2015 opening.

We can say with some credibility and some definitiveness that Victoria Day will be opening day, Tony Barnes, chairman of the facility's steering committee, told city councillors earlier this week.

Bill Rogerson, the Aquatarium's executive director, had previously promised a revised opening date between March and May of 2015.

The new date was only the latest in a series of delays in the opening of the interactive tourist attraction, previously slated to open on the June 2013 weekend of the Tall Ships Festival, then bumped to World Water Day last March 22.

City officials hope the $21-million Aquatarium, now being built at the foot of Broad Street adjacent to the Tall Ships Landing condominium tower, will be Brockville's signature tourism attraction.

Council members this week seemed concerned about the new opening date, noting, among other things, the incomplete roof.

Mayor David Henderson said Thursday that reaction was not skepticism, but caution.

He added he wants to ensure the steering committee is building in enough leeway to make sure that we are not over-promising.

This is one area where it has consistently happened, said the mayor.

Barnes acknowledged there is some siding and some roofing on the building that remains incomplete, but that's not the real potential worry.
