Texas Woman Helps Women Battling Cancer Get Their Homes Cleaned – for Free!

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It started with a phone call.

Years ago, Debbie Sardone, owner of Buckets & Bows Maid Service, got a call from a woman inquiring about a price quote for Sardone's cleaning service.

"I gave her our rates," she tells PEOPLE, "and she went, 'Oh I can't afford that, I'm undergoing cancer treatment' and hung up."

It was a literal wake-up call for Sardone.

"I sat there and realized I could have given her the cleaning for free, and I was disappointed it didn't occur to me until too late," she recalls.

"There's no way for me to call that first woman back," says Sardone, 55, of Flower Mound, Texas, explaining that it was in the days before caller ID.

"But she inspired me to change, inspired a policy that eventually became a nationwide nonprofit," she says.

That nationwide nonprofit is Cleaning for a Reason, an organization that provides housecleaning services free of charge to women battling cancer.

Since the organization was founded in 2006, more than 1,100 maid services across the nation and in Canada have signed up to dedicate their time to women in need.

"Maid-service owners have told us it's the most rewarding thing they've ever done in business," says Sardone.

Another Man Jumps White House Fence

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Another man jumped the White House fence Wednesday and made it onto the North Lawn before he was arrested by Secret Service officers, a little more than a month after another man climbed the fence and ran inside the executive mansion, officials said.

Dominic Adesanya, 23, of Bel Air, Md., was tackled and apprehended by security officers about 20 yards past the fence after he entered the lawn at 7:16 p.m., a Secret Service official said. Adesanya was unarmed, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment. Charges are pending.

Two Secret Service dogs were injured in the incident, and they were taken to a veterinarian for treatment, the official said. The White House press corps and photographers were locked inside the White House as a security precaution.

On Sept. 19, Omar Gonzalez, 42, allegedly breached the secure grounds of the White House in an incident that drew criticism to security procedures that led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson. Gonzalez was carrying a knife and had a machete and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in his car and made it as far as the East Room of the White House before he was tackled, officials said.

A Maryland man hopped the White House fence and assaulted two police dogs Wednesday night before he was apprehended by Secret Service agents on the North Lawn.

Dominic Adesanya, 23, was charged with felonies for making threats and punching and kicking the canine officers, as well as four misdemeanor charges. President Obama was inside the White House when the breach occurred.

Video footage below shows Adesanya jumping the fence around 7:15 p.m., and kicking and punching police dogs on the lawn.

Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary reportedthat Adesanya was unarmed while the dogs, Hurricane and Jordan, were taken to a veterinarian for minor bruising, and were cleared to return to work.

Adesanya was also charged with unlawful entry at the White House complex in a July incident, in which he allegedlytold an officer that hopping the compromised security barrier "was easy and that the next fence to the south grounds of the White House would not be a problem as well."

The former Stevenson University track athlete also told officials that the Rothschilds a prominent banking family were watching him. Adesanya was ordered to attend outpatient mental health treatment and was expected in court on September 9.

Three days after the July arrest, Adesanya was apprehended at the White House complex after he refused to leave the Treasury building and swung his fists at officers. He was given a curfew and ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device. A warrant was issued for Adesanya's arrest after he failed to appear at his September court date.

Wednesday's breach marks the seventh time this year that someone has made it over the White House fence. Just over a month ago, a man with a knife darted over the fence, across the lawn, and into the executive mansion before being captured by Secret Service agents. That incident led to the resignation of former Secret Service director Julia Pierson. Internal and independent reviews of the agency's practices are currently underway.

White House Fence Jumper: Video Shows Dogs Attacking Intruder

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A man who jumped over the White House fence was apprehended by Secret Service agents, who were assisted by dogs.

The man went over the fence at 7:16 p.m. and ran 30 yards across the north lawn, where two dogs attacked him, and he was subsequently arrested by Secret Service Agents.

Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan told the Washington Post, An individual jumped the north fence of the White House. He was immediately taken into custody by canine units and Uniformed Division officers. No shots were fired, Donovan said.

The White House was placed on lockdown and members of the media were held inside until it was lifted.

Video of the incident appears to show the man kicking and punching at the dogs as they attack him. The man, whose name has not been released, is reportedly receiving medical treatment for a dog bite.

This is the seventh such incident at the White House this year, and comes only weeks after an incident in which intruder Omar Gonzalez, 42, made it into the executive mansion armed with a knifebefore being apprehended. Secret Service Director Julia Pierson resigned over the breach of security.

CBS White House correspondent Mark Knollerquoted a Secret Service spokesperson as saying dogs got him. Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason tweeted that security at the White House appears to have adopted different tactics in dealing with intruders since the Gonzalez incident.

Southview Design Offers Hot Landscaping Tips for the Fall

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (PRWEB) October 23, 2014

Winter may be around the corner, but the landscape experts at Southview Design say that this is ideal time to think about the pillars in any landscape design the trees.

The best time to plant trees and shrubs is in the fall, and now is the time to get them in the ground, said Karen Filloon, a landscape designer with Southview Design. The roots just need to get established before the snow flies, Filloon said. Roots can grow in soil as cold as 40 degrees. Even if the air temperature is below 40, the soil is warmer than the air.

The most important consideration in planting a tree is to pick a location that will enable the tree to grow to its full size and offers the requisite conditions sun or shade for that particular plant, Filloon advised. You dont want to have to transplant a tree or a shrub, so plan ahead, she said. Ideally, that tree or shrub is one component of an overall landscape design for your entire yard.

Since its fall, Filloon cautioned against fertilizing trees or shrubs, which can weaken the plant and inhibit root establishment. She also advised against pruning trees and shrubs; pruning promotes new growth which is fine in the spring, but not the fall. However, adding a root hormone, which encourages roots to grow, is definitely a good idea, she said.

A thoughtful landscape design also takes lighting into consideration. Featured trees can set the stage for dramatic nighttime lighting using one of several lighting techniques, such as uplighting, silhouetting and moonlighting. If the tree is big enough at least 15 feet tall it could be a candidate for downlighting or moonlighting, Filloon said. The light fixture is mounted high up in the trunk and branches so it can cast light downward through the branches to create interesting shadows on the ground.

The type of fixture, intensity and color of the bulbs, and spread of the beams can have a huge effect on the character and mood. Lighting is also a great way to brighten the long autumn nights and dress up a home for the holidays.

Since Minnesota has had very little rain this year less than .02 of an inch so far in October its important to thoroughly water your trees and especially the newly-planted ones until the ground freezes, Filloon said. She also suggested hiring an arborist to check the trees for overall health and possible winter/spring pruning.

Southview Design has posted several photos showing moonlighting and other dramatic effects created by lighting trees and landscape features. For outdoor landscaping and lighting ideas, visit http://www.southviewdesign.com.

Gray water trial will help determine feasibility for landscape irrigation

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

14 hours ago by Paul Schattenberg The second phase of gray water research at the Uvalde center will focus on how gray water affects the performance, growth and aesthetics of landscape plants, as well as the chemical composition of the soil. The trial plot consists of 24 rows of 13 different native, exotic and adaptive landscaping plants.

The second phase of a study on the use of gray water for landscape irrigation will soon be underway and its results may affect how municipalities view gray water as an alternative non-potable water source statewide and beyond, said the Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientist leading the study.

Dr. Raul Cabrera, AgriLife Research horticulturist at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Uvalde, said he is now in the process of starting the second phase of his study on the long-term effects of gray water irrigation on the growth, performance and aesthetics of several ornamental plant species.

"Gray water provides a potential alternative, non-potable water source available in practically every home," Cabrera said. "By definition, gray water is simply wastewater, basically soapy water coming primarily from washing machines, showers and bathtubs.

"The research is particularly useful for application in urban areas where as much as 50 percent of household water is used for landscape irrigation."

He said with many parts of the nation facing water restrictions, competition for water resources and drought, it is becoming more necessary to minimize our dependence on potable water supplies.

"Using native and adaptive plants, applying good management practices such as spreading mulch to retain moisture and the wise use of supplemental irrigation are vital in preserving the state's and nation's potable water resources," Cabrera said.

He said gray water accounts for about half of the wastewater from a typical household.

Cabrera said the use of gray water from washing machines alone has the potential for saving a significant amount of the state's potable water supply. He said if gray water from household laundry in Texas could be used for landscape irrigation, it could save about 400,000 acre feet of potable water annually. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo)

"It is estimated that the average family of four will produce 90 to 100 gallons of gray water per day. That's a lot of non-potable water that could be going toward supplemental landscape irrigation."

Attrition of first World War etched like scars into Flanders landscape

Last Friday evening, quietness descended over a corner of northern Europe as Belgium paused to remember the 600,000 victims of the first World War who died on Belgian soil.

From Nieuwpoort on the North Sea to the town of Ploegsteert, 50km south on the French border, 8,400 torchbearers lined up to honour those who fell between 1914 and 1918.

The front of light illuminated the arc of the western front, the line between allied and German powers which, though no longer visible, is etched into the Flanders landscape like a scar.

Though the position of the front shifted periodically during the four-year war, reflecting the advances made by each side, it was the relative stagnancy of the western front that was one of the great tragedies of the war, as it became a battle of attrition rather than conquest.

While commemoration of this years centenary of the outbreak of the war reached its peak during the summer, as countries marked the chain of events that began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28th, 1914, and culminated with the outbreak of the war less than six weeks later, commemorative events are continuing in Belgium and further afield.

The approach of the traditional armistice date of November 11th in a few weeks time is likely to bring the issue of commemoration back into focus.

The Republic will be taking an active role in the commemorations, as the country continues its engagement with a chapter of history that had long been hidden.

Perhaps of most significance will be the participation of Irelands Ambassador to Britain, Daniel Mulhall, in the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the cenotaph in London for the first time this year.

s involvement But there is also a flurry of events in Belgium that will mark the Republic
