    A passion for antique purses

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mesh purses, once carried by flappers in the 1920s, are among the 2,500 handbags some dating back to the 1600s in the collection of Lori Blaser. Photo by Elyse Glickman

Lori Blasers home is a shrine to womens handbags. With 2,500 pieces in her collection the oldest of which dates back to the 16th century she displays her treasures with the eye of a skilled interior decorator (which she is). Beaded and mesh bags nonchalantly dangle from the edges of painting frames. Tiny mesh vanity purses hang from a multihook stand to form a small chandelier that rests on a desk.

The co-author of the book A Passion for Purses, Blaser has come to understand that these items are more than simple fashion accessories. They contain fascinating histories about their owners, the times in which they lived and the craftspeople who made the bags.

But the Thousand Oaks woman long has had a personal affection for them, too.

I am just drawn to purses, Blaser said, offering as proof a photo of herself at age 2 in her native Michigan, decked out in a puffy snowsuit and clutching a small purse.

I cant tell you why, but I know it is something inside of me, she continued. Our family had modest means, and although I did not have the money to buy brand-new purses, I realized I did not want what everybody else was carrying. I bought 50s purses made with alligator, crocodile and snakeskin with my babysitting money.

Blaser, who is in her 50s, explains her passion for purses truly ignited around the time she turned 40 and went to Europe for the first time. On a visit to the London Silver Vaults, the worlds largest retail collection of fine antique silver, she bought her first antique mesh purse, which was more than 80 years old. By then, she had retired from her telecommunications career to raise her youngest son, Brian.

In 2003, about a decade after her London trip, she stumbled upon one of the most beautiful antique purses she had seen in her life.

I did not win that purse, but my heart started palpitating, and I thought at that moment I died and went to heaven, she recalled. There is something about this purse that marked the beginning of my obsession in earnest.

As her collection grew, Blaser built a network of fellow collectors from around the world. It led to her co-authoring a book with Georgia-based collector Paula Higgins, covering the history, art, design and functions of handbags through the ages. Both women are founding members of the Antique Purse Collectors Society. This year, the group met in Amsterdam at the Museum of Bags and Purses at the invitation of its director, Sigrid Ivo.

Hook Lobster Redevelopment: Residential Tower, Sit-Down Restaurant

Owners of James Hook & Co. would preserve their working seafood pound on the Boston waterfront while adding a 285-foot-tall residential tower under designs unveiled Wednesday.

William Zielinski, a principal at developer SKW Partners Inc., said the Hook family considered other uses, including offices and hotels before settling on a residential tower - either apartments or condos - for the half-acre site at the corner of Northern and Atlantic avenues.

"They will remain and look forward to seeing their business reunited and expanded," Zielinski said.

The original building where the fourth-generation seafood wholesaler operated was destroyed by fire in 2008. Since then, the business has been operating out of temporary buildings that would be removed to make way for the new development.

The seafood market, wholesale business and sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating on the harbor side would occupy 9,000 square feet on the ground floor of the new building.

"We've got plenty of permeability and light and air around the building," architect David Manfredi said.

The presentation took place during a meeting of the Downtown Waterfront Municipal Harbor Planning Advisory Committee, which is advising the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) on development along the central waterfront.

Hartford's 100 Pearl skyscraper for sale

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    October 23, 2014

    Deal Watch Today

Weeks after downtown Hartford's distressed CityPlace II skyscraper landed a new owner, a healthier office tower directly opposite 100 Pearl Street is on the sale block without an asking price.

Short Hills, N.J., landlord The Silverman Group is selling the 17-story building sheathed in sapphire-blue glass it bought two years ago, paying a reported $18 million cash for the tower at the northeast corner of Pearl and Trumbull that at the time was about two-thirds vacant.

A digital flyer circulating from the Hartford office of CBRE/New England, which has the listing, claims 100 Pearl's approximately 281,000 square feet is 99 percent leased. Corporate tenants include Virtus Investment Partners, Updike Kelly & Spellacy, Guilford Specialty Group, First Niagara, First National Title, Ricoh USA, Regus, Environ and Robert Half International, and the nonprofit Greater Hartford Arts Council.

According to the flyer, 100 Pearl Street offers a first-year in-place net operating income of $3.2 million annually, with few of its current leases due to expire in the short term. Its underground parking garage yields another $600,000 in revenue a year.

Silverman has invested some $2.3 million in the building, the flyer says. Those include a revamped main entryway and six-story foyer, with concierge station. Other additions include an expanded fitness suite and fourth-floor caf area with a pool table and flat-screen TVs.

The building debuted in 1989 and for a time was headquarters for former Mechanics Savings Bank, now part of Webster Bank.

Officials with The Silverman Group and CBRE/New England did not immediately return calls Thursday for comment.

Listing of 100 Pearl comes just two months after a Monroe, N.Y. investment group paid $20.6 million for CityPlace II, 185 Asylum St., at a foreclosure auction in August. That building was previously owned by Northland Investment Corp.

Leaky Indoor Stadium roof adds to Sports Hubs woes

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE: Already hit by lighting issues that drew complaints on Tuesday (Oct 21) from tennis players at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals, the Singapore Indoor Stadium (SIS) on Wednesday found itself dealing with a roof leak as well.

An afternoon downpour caused water to drip onto the court at the SIS which is part of the S$1.33 billion Sports Hub at Kallang as the first womens doubles quarter-final match between Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, and the Russian-Australian pairing of Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova, got under way at 1.30pm.

Towels had to be placed on two separate spots on court in the section closer to the South entrance in between games during the second set, with a ball kid also activated to mop up the water during the match. Play was not disrupted, with the leak appearing to stop as the match progressed.

SportsHub Pte Ltd (SHPL) was expected to issue a statement in consultation with Sport Singapore on Wednesday, but was unable to respond by press time last night.

The Indoor Stadium was on Tuesday hit by complaints from top players Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova that certain lights were turning on and off during their match.

Wednesdays roof leak was yet another blow for the billion-dollar Sports Hub, with pitch issues at the National Stadium forcing SHPL to cancel a rugby friendly between the Asia Pacific Dragons and Maori All Blacks scheduled for Nov 15, while the Nov 8 Jay Chou concert was postponed to Dec 27 to allow the pitch more time to recover for next months ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup.

This is not the first time that the Indoor Stadium which was opened in December 1989 has suffered a roof leak. At the badminton Singapore Open in 2010, rainwater seeping through the roof onto Court 2 caused a three-hour backlog of matches, forcing the tournament referee to reschedule 10 matches to the next day.

In July 2012, the stadium was shut for more than three months to allow for a series of renovations that included work on its interior roof. But the problem persisted, recurring in April, again during badmintons Singapore Open when play was halted for nearly an hour due to rainwater dripping onto the court.
