    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Twelve local and international architecture practices have been invited by the Art Gallery of New South Wales to submit a concept design for Sydney Modern project, a $450 million expansion of the art gallery. Five practices will move on to produce conceptual designs in the final round of the competition.

The Sydney Modern vision for expansion and transformation is much more than just a building project, says Dr. Michael Brand, gallery director. Through this invited competition the gallery is seeking ideas that will create an architecturally ambitious, intelligent, sensitive, sustainable, and highly functional design. Our site overlooking Sydney Harbour will inspire each of the invited architectural practices, all of whom have extraordinary design skills.

The invited architectural practices are: Candalepas Associates Sydney David Chipperfield Architects London Fender Katsalidis Melbourne Herzog & de Meuron Basel Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA Tokyo Kengo Kuma & Associates Tokyo Kerry Hill Architects Singapore Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos Madrid RPBW (Renzo Piano Building Workshop) Genoa RMA Architects (Rahul Mehrotra Architects) Mumbai Sean Godsell Architects Melbourne Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Architects New York

The Sydney Modern Jury, chaired by Dr. Brand, selected these practices. The jury will select up to five architectural practices to proceed to the second stage of the competition in early 2015.

Sydney Modern Jury members include: Dr. Michael Brand, (chair) director, Art Gallery of New South Wales Kathryn Gustafson, Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (Seattle) and Gustafson Porter (London) Michael Lynch, CBE AM CEO West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, Hong Kong Professor Toshiko Mori Robert P Hubbard, professor in the practice of architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design Professor Glenn Murcutt, Australian architect and recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2002 Professor Juhani Pallasmaa, Helsinki-based architect, professor emeritus, and widely published writer Hetti Perkins, member of the Eastern Arrernte and Kalkadoon Aboriginal communities and internationally acclaimed curator, filmmaker, and author

Based on these final submissions, the jury will select an architectural practice in April that will work closely with the gallery and stakeholders to develop a detailed design.

Competition to give Birmingham Centenary Square a new look

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Architects are being offered the chance to redesign Birminghams Centenary Square in a new competition launched by the city council.

With the transformation of surrounding buildings underway with the new Library of Birmingham finished and work on Paradise Circus, Arena Central and the Metro extension due to start - the council believes it is now the time to look at the square itself.

A competition for the public space is now being launched through the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Landscape Institute on behalf of the city council.

The competition is open to registered architects, landscape architects, urban designers and students of these disciplines worldwide.

And with Enterprise Zone funding available, as well as public realm spin off cash from the various developments there is likely to be funding on the table to turn any designs into a reality.

Council deputy leader Ian Ward said: This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for designers and the city council to shape what we hope will become a space accessible to both residents and visitors.

I am looking forward to seeing some truly innovative ideas put forward by designers from around the world.

    Construction Underway on Fraser Centre

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Construction is finally underway on the Fraser Centre in downtown State College. Crews are working to get the grounds at the corner of Fraser Street and West Beaver Avenue ready for construction. Current plans for the center include retail space, a Hyatt Place hotel, residential condos and restaurants. The building will be 65,000 square feet and 158 feet tall. The Fraser Centre Project was first proposed in 2007 and has since run into several delays. Downtown State College improvement district representatives say the project is an exciting addition to the area. "We know this will be a convenience for folks for a while. We hope that our loyal patrons of downtown State College will stick with us through this project, said George Arnold, Executive Director of Downtown State College Improvement District. It will certainly impact some streets closing, but remember our businesses down here, they are here and you know, this project will ultimately improve downtown State College." The first phase of the project is expected to be complete by spring, and the second phase should begin in April or may.

Police: Man used chainsaw on family vacation home

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LIDKOPING, Sweden, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A Swedish man whose parents gave their vacation home to his brother is accused of causing $98,000 in damage to the domicile with a chainsaw.

Authorities said the 47-year-old man wanted his parents' vacation home in Lidkoping and became angry when they decided to give the house to his older brother.

The man allegedly armed himself with a chainsaw and caused $98,000 worth of damage to the house, including the destruction of the home's facade, interior and several electronic devices.

Investigators said the man also cut down 20 trees from the vacation home's garden.

The man also allegedly stole a heater from the bathroom during the January incident.

The suspect was charged Tuesday in Skaraborg District Court with causing serious damage and theft.

Police said the man told investigators he did not commit a crime because he helped fund a restoration of the home during the 1990s and he was the one who planted the trees he chopped down.

Guy has power to save Whitlam home

    - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Video will begin in 5 seconds.

Winding back history to revisit the 1972 ALP election theme song that helped bring Gough Whitlam to power after 23 years of coalition government. By Rocco Fazzari and Denis Carnahan.

Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy has stopped the destruction of Gough Whitlam's birthplace in the Melbourne suburb of Kew, despite on Wednesday claiming he could not intervene because a demolition order had already been granted by the local council.

Mr Guy on Thursday said he had applied for an interim protection order on the former prime minister's family home in Kew.

"Yesterday I applied for an Interim Protection Order, under the Heritage Act, for the birthplace of Gough Whitlam," Mr Guy said."I am advised that the Heritage Council has today made an Interim Protection Order."

Demolition has begun at Ngara, the Kew childhood home of Gough Whitlam.

Mr Guy said Mr Whitlam was "widely acknowledged to be one of the most significant Australian political leaders of the 20th century".

"As his birthplace, it is likely that the cultural significance of this house will become recognised more strongly as time passes," he said.

The interim protection order would be issued while the nomination of the house to the Heritage Register proceeded, Mr Guy said, to allow "for a fresh consideration of its cultural significance given Prime Minister Whitlam's recent passing".
