The roofing company and supervisor charged with occupational health and safety violations in relation to work being done on the Canadian Tire store in Corner Brook last spring have a trial date set in provincial court.

McCarthy's Roofing Ltd. was charged with two offences under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, namely failing to provide the necessary supervision to ensure the safety of workers and failing to ensure workers were provided with a suitable fall protection system.

Gregory Browning, a supervisor with the company, was charged with one violation, failing to ensure workers under his watch used equipment required under regulation.

The company and Browning have entered not guilty pleas and a trial date was set for Jan. 16 when the matter was called in provincial court in Corner Brook this week.

Two other employees have also been charged. The allegation against them is they failed to use equipment provided for their protection in accordance with the instructions for use and training provided. Their matters are being dealt with separately and their next appearance in provincial court is scheduled for Nov. 4.

An occupational health and safety officer noted violations on two occasions during site visits May 16, according to a Service NL press release announcing the charges this past summer. Workers on the roof were using fall protection equipment incorrectly, according to the officer.

On the first inspection, harnesses were being worn, but were not attached to the existing anchorages. On the second inspection that day, one worker was not connected to an anchorage and the second worker was connected incorrectly to the equipment. The supervisor was not present on either occasion.

Neither of the inspections at the Murphy Square store were the result of incidents involving injuries.

Renewal by Andersen of New Jersey is sponsoring a benefit event to raise funds for support the noble efforts of K9s for Warriors on Nov. 16, 2014 at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway, NJ.

The event, K9s for Warriors Comedy Night, expects to raise over $65,000 for the non-profit organization that helps provide service dogs to U.S. veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury as a result of military service post 9/11. The organizations goal is to give a new leash on life to rescue dogs and military heroes, empowering warriors to return to civilian life with dignity and independence.

Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injuries are real issues for our soldiers coming back from the Middle East, Larry Landes, Renewal by Andersen of Central and Northern New Jersey president said. These issues have destroyed the lives of countless servicemen and women and these dogs have proven to have a dramatic positive impact on these heroes lives. We are honored to help however we can to get these heroes back on their feet and living productive lives again.

Our program has been successful, with documented recovery from the debilitating horrors of war, but the need is critical and overwhelming, Shari Duval, K9s for Warriors president said. We currently have a year-long waiting list, we must do more. Our plans are to expand our current program to serve more warriors. We will continue our goal of serving our Nations Greatest Asset, our Military Men and Women.

K9s for Warriors reports that it costs approximately $15,000 to train and pair up a rescue dog with a wounded warrior.

Service dogs have been long used as companions and helpers for those with disabilities such as blindness, but only recently have we learned how they can help guide those suffering with less visible conditions.

Mario Balotelli is fighting for his Liverpool career.

The Anfield giants' manager Brendan Rodgers stressed on Thursday that there is no room for sentiment in football. And that means he won't hesitate to bring in a replacement forward during the January transfer window if necessary.

Rodgers and Balotelli met before Thursday training and the player was fined for swapping shirts with Real Madrid defender Pepe at half-time of the 3-0 Champions League defeat by the Spanish side the night before.

More importantly than the shirt-swapping issue, the Italian's performances since his 16million move from AC Milan two months ago are proving a huge concern to Rodgers - and the January transfer window opens in 68 days.

He said: At this moment in time, Ill be working with the players that we have and he is one of them. Not just improving him, but improving all the players. And we will see come January what the team needs."

Balotelli has had the second-most shots per game of any striker in any of the top five leagues in Europe, but is yet to score in the Premier League. His only Liverpool goal so far came in the Champions League win over Ludogorets.

Rodgers said: We brought in the player to give him a chance, and [we] give him every chance. At this moment in time, of course, he hasnt scored the goals we would like or want. We have to give him that opportunity, and we will give him every opportunity.

As the winter months approach, homeowners across the country are looking at the prospects of high heating costs once again, and many are looking at possible ways to cut their utility bills. Those are exactly the drivers of demand that Watsco is looking for, as it takes responsibility for getting systems from suppliers like United Technologies 'Carrier division and the local repair and installation companies that put in and maintain HVAC systems in homes across the country. As trends like the move from heating oil to natural gas in many areas of the country have taken hold, Watsco has been able to capitalize on increased demand for more efficient heating and cooling systems. Yet some investors were nervous about Watsco's prospects for its third-quarter results, given a relatively cool summer season. Let's take a closer look at how Watsco did last quarter.

Racking up records at Watsco Watsco touted a number of record results for its third quarter, as the company enjoyed solid gains in its most important metrics. Revenue climbed by 5% to a record $1.135 billion, helping to drive earnings per share up 18% to $1.56, also a record. The most important driver of those positive results was margin expansion and cost containment, as Watsco saw gross profit margins rise by three-tenths of a percentage point and operating margins climb by half a percentage point. Overhead costs fell to record low levels, and operating profits jumped 10% to record levels of $105 million.

Looking at Watsco's various business units, the company produced solid growth in most of its key segments. Revenue from HVAC equipment, which makes up about two-thirds of overall sales, climbed 7%, with residential equipment in particular seeing 8% growth as Watsco captured a greater portion of the overall market. In particular, Watsco saw continued efforts from homeowners seeking to take advantage of incentives for high-efficiency residential heating and cooling systems, as the company reported double-digit percentage growth in the high-efficiency area. Commercial refrigeration sales gained 14%, leading the company's segments. Only the Other HVAC Products category reported flat results compared to last year's levels.

Also helping to drive Watsco's results higher was its increased ownership interest in its joint venture with Carrier. With the company having partnered up with the United Technologies division in 2009, Watsco has generated considerable success from the venture, and Watsco decided to spend $88 million to raise its stake in the venture from 70% to 80%.

What's coming next for Watsco? In light of its success, Watsco said that it expects to see earnings per share for the full 2014 year come in between $4.20 and $4.40. That would represent growth of between 14% and 20%, and it's consistent with the $4.26 per share consensus among investors.

Watsco Stays Hot Despite the Summer's Cool Weather

UNM energy engineers at the Physical Plant Department were recognized by the New Mexico Association of Energy Engineers with two prestigious awards for decades of achievements in increasing energy efficiency on campus.

The PPDs Engineering and Energy Services division won the Corporate Energy Management award for outstanding accomplishments in developing, organizing, managing and implementing their corporate energy management program, according to the NMAEE website.

And Donald Swick, University facilities engineer, was honored with Energy Engineer of the Year award for his lifetime achievements.

The award is given to an individual for outstanding accomplishments in promoting the practices, principles and procedures of energy engineering, the website said.

Swick said his individual award is based on his work in energy conservation for the past 40 years at various locations around the state. Most of his work at UNM has involved upgrading the infrastructures of some of UNMs oldest facilities, such as Northrop and Regener Halls, he said.

Each of those projects was a total upgrade of building controls, improvements to the heating and cooling systems and reduced wattage to lighting systems, Swick said. Typically, we saw in the range of 35- to 45-percent savings in each of those projects.

The true honor is having the opportunity to work with a talented group of engineers at the PPD, he said.

Not only are we looking at projects that involve improving the performance within buildings, we have developed a group of technicians that have the training and the skills to install, operate and maintain these new digital control systems, Swick said.

David Penasa, facilities engineer-electrical, said he has been involved with the PPD for 11 years. He and his fellow engineers have been working hard to reduce UNMs energy dependence and to be recognized for (their) work is extremely gratifying, he said.

The fact that we can save on the order of more than a million dollars a year in utility costs by implementing these energy conservation projects, I think, is pretty impressive, Penasa said.

The Citys new ElectricityServices head office in Bellville has been recognised by the Green Building Council of South Africa as the first municipal building to adhere todesign, construction and management best practice in terms of resource efficiency. As such, it has been awarded a four-star green energy rating.

Gone are the days when municipal buildings were seen as the dreary, fluorescently lit centres of painstaking bureaucracy. With its eco-friendly and innovative design, the City of Cape Towns Bellville Electricity Services Depot breaks the mould not only aesthetically, but also in terms of the impact it has on the environment. This design has been recognised by the Green Building Council of South Africa, who awarded it a four-star rating.

Notable features of the building include an air conditioning system that achieves a 150% improvement on the requirements set out in the South African national standards for energy efficiency, without compromising the comfort levels of staff. In fact, the fresh air system supplies the building with 12,5 litres of air per second, per person. This means increased oxygen levels and fewer contaminants. Additionally, the building has been designed to promote the use of natural light, and maximise views to the outside with curved facades. Sun louvres protect the curtain wall glazing from heat gain, and blinds have been installed throughout the facility so that comfortable lighting levels can be maintained.

In addition, smart lighting controls, motion sensors and timers linked to the building management system have been installed. This system is calibrated to automatically turn lights off when need be or when no motion is detected, while also adjusting the level of lighting according to the amount of daylight coming into the building. Artificial lighting is almost superfluous as the building is configured around a central glazed atrium that introduces natural light to the offices.

A graph taken from an office, shows the effect of the lights that dim as natural light enters the office. At 06:30, the light switched on as the person entered the office at 100% energy. The amount of energy used went down to 5% at 12:00. Between 14:15 and 15:00, the light switched off when the person stepped out of the office.

Moreover, 400 solar panels have been installed to help reduce the energy consumption of the building. On average, these panels generate approximately 156 800 kWh per year.Further reducing the buildings carbon footprint is the rooftop garden, as well as outdoor seating and recreational areas a stark contrast to the hard-surfaced parking areas, residential buildings and tennis courts that occupied the space previously. Importantly, it was landscaped using indigenous, water-wise plants that grow naturally in the area.

The plumbing system has been split into black and grey water discharges to enable the waste streams to be split for different treatment processes. A grey water recycling system has also been incorporated into the building design to reduce potable water use for flushing of toilets and urinals. The filtration process is fully automated and uses a chemical-free treatment method.

In terms of the materials used, the furniture, fittings, finishes and building fabric (paints, carpets, adhesives, composite wood products, sealants, etc.) were carefully selected to minimise emissions. In addition, all timber products used are sourced from reused and Forest Stewardship Council-certified timber.

The Electricity Services Departments pioneering attitude toward green building design is serving as an example for other departments and municipalities to follow. So far both the Human Settlements Directorate (with their Contact Office in Manenberg) and Transport for Cape Town (with the new Wallacedene Taxi Rank) have since been successful in meeting the standards set out by the Green Buildings Council of South Africa, said the Citys Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg.
