Elgin City Council set to approve $131,120 contract for tree replacement

    - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ELGIN The City Council Wednesday night is to award Davey Tree Expert Company a contract in the amount of $131,120 for tree removal and planting in the Remington Meadows and Remington at Providence subdivisions.

The tree bid for the two Remington properties is to replace dead or dying trees and to plant trees that were supposed to have been done but were not since the developer went out of business, City Engineer Joe Evers said. I do not believe the winter had an impact on the trees we are looking to replace.

According to supporting material for the Wednesday council meeting, the Remington Meadows subdivision is located south of Water Road and east of Nesler Road, and the Remington at Providence subdivision is located south of Gansett Parkway and east of Nesler Road.

As part of approving these subdivisions, city ordinances required the developer to post a security in the form of a letter of credit to guarantee the completion of public improvements within the subdivisions, which are now in the DR Horton portfolio.

When Remington Homes failed to complete the public improvements within the subject subdivisions and were therefore in default of their obligations, the city made a demand on the letters of credit, the material states.

The city hired Engineering Enterprises to come up with a punch list of public infrastructure itemsneeding replacement or completion, including the tree replacement.

The number of trees to be replaced is between 130 and 150, and the project is expected to be done by May 31, 2015. Ten different types of trees will be planted and all come with a one year replacement warranty by the contractor. The tree work in Remington at Providence will run $89,055 and the cost for the work at Remington Meadows will be $42,065. The supporting material notes that there are sufficient funds remaining from the letters of credit issued for the project to pay for the tree work.

Never lose your umbrella again with Blunt + Tile integration

    - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This weeks Smart Living roundup features the worlds first traceable umbrella, a smart way to accept packages, and a retail giants new focus on smart, connected products.

For Londoners and Seattleites, never worry of misplacing your umbrella again. Blunt Umbrellas UK Ltd. has partnered with Tile Inc., a Bluetooth Low Energy tracker with an international lost-and-found community, to deliver the traceable umbrella. This is the first major partnership for Tile to incorporate its location-tracking chips into a consumer product.

Blunt is best known for its unique and lightweight design that makes their umbrellas sturdy, even when faced with strong winds and rain. Its ribs and shaft are made from durable fibreglass and has an aerodynamic design. Blunt umbrellas are also storm resistant and come with a two-year warranty.

To make the famous umbrella traceable, the waterproof Tile unit lives discreetly in the Blunts canopy and connects to the Tile mobile app. This allows users to locate a misplaced umbrella. It also leverages the large Tile community to help locate a lost umbrella, as each Tile emits a signal that can be picked up by other nearby Tile users.

The postman may always ring twice, but youre not always at home. For expensive deliveries, theres nothing more agonizing than worrying over potential thefts or having to drive to a local center to pick up the package yourself.

In the United Kingdom, a parcel delivery system is being tested with residents and businesses in St Albans and Radlett. Called Pelipod, the delivery unitis a large anddurable box with a built-in battery that lasts for a year, a cable lock to secure the container to the building, an electronic locking system, and GPRS technology to monitor package delivery or pick-up.

So how does it work? When you order online, you can include in your shipping instructions to have the item/s delivered to your Pelipod. It will then create a one-time deliver code which the delivery person uses to open the Pelipod. It also features a camera that allows verification of the delivery, and a notificationwhen the package has been delivered. When a user gets home, he or she uses their own user code to open the Pelipod toget their package. If the package is damaged or needs to be returned for some reason, the Pelipod can also be used for the same purpose.

Local World War II veteran looking for gallery to exhibit work

    - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

World War II veteran, Chuck Bahde, stands by his sculpture of a wave, made out of an old solar panel.

RANCHO SANTA FE Chuck Bahde was 17 when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September 1943. He was sent to gunnery school, got his wings and was the youngest member of the 7th Air Force fighter group, 78th fighter squadron.

He was set on making his mark as a fighter pilot. But instead was assigned to a special squad to join the Marines in taking over the airstrip at Iwo Jima.

The 88-year old veteran has his share of stories and medals from World War II, but hed rather talk about the art hes made over the last several decades.

One of the Dimensionals by Chuck Bahde

He has more than 100 pieces in his collection at his Rancho Santa Fe home that he made out of recycled material, mostly scraps of plastic sheet, broken tile, beads and old solar panels. No two are alike. He is looking for a gallery to exhibit his work.

Bahde has sold his work locally at the former Timmons Gallery in Rancho Santa Fe, and is working with local military artist Todd Krasovetz to find a gallery.

He recently donated one piece, called Ice Jam, to the Oceanside Museum of Art.

His work with plastic sheets represents an iconographic art form, said Daniel Foster, executive director at the Oceanside Museum of Art. His art style is defined by the way he crafts plastic into architectural and abstract shapes and forms.

Bahde generally doesnt deliberately incorporate his military experiences in his art, except one piece showing the raising of the flag at Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima, which he witnessed from the harbor.

Estero considers installing fire sprinklers in all new homes

    - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ESTERO, Fla.- Does your house have a fire sprinkler system? The fire marshal is suggesting every new home built in Estero must have sprinklers installed before anyone can move in.

He says the benefits far outweigh the cost but local builders don't think so.

Joey Hatfield knows a lot about house fires. "There are three main causes of house fires: men, women and children."

He's on the State Board of Fire Prevention and is also a partner of Naples Fire Protection Inc.

The company installs sprinkler heads in buildings as well as in residential homes.

Hatfield says it's a no-brainer. "The evidence is so clear, that these sprinklers save lives, every single day. It's all documented."

The company often demonstrates the effectiveness of sprinklers to the public.

A demonstration by the Naples Fire Department shows fire spreads quickly in a model room without sprinklers. In minutes, it's fully engulfed and destroyed. The opposite happens in the room with the sprinkler.

Some home builders are strongly opposed to the madatory installation of sprinkler systems in residential homes.

The vice president of the Lee County Building Industry Association (BIA) says there's no benefit for the added construction cost.

Malfunctioning Sprinkler System Causes Water Damage to VA

    - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    by Justin Kree NewsWest 9

BIG SPRING-A major clean up effort is going on inside the VA hospital after a malfunctioning sprinkler system dumped approximately 50,000 gallons of water down the third floor hallway.

"We were installing a new sprinkler system throughout the whole medical center. When they started to pressure it up Sunday evening and test some of the valves, one of them failed,"Iva Jo Hanslik, Community Relations Coordinator for the VA Hospital in Big Spring, said.

Once crews realized what was happening, they quickly sprung to action shutting off the water. Unfortunately, damage had already been done.

"A lot of water damage in our laboratory section and our Radiology Department. Of course, the water comes down to the first floor," Hanslik said.

Hanslik tells NewsWest 9 that Veterans medical records are kept in a secure network known as computerized medical records system. With the water affecting the computer system, the hospital switched over to wireless. They will use wireless until the damaged server can be fixed.

"The two areas hardest hit will be functioning with wireless capability. We are using this so those reports can continue to funnel into the computerized medical records," Hanslik said.

Some departments even had to be moved around so business can still go on while the hospital continues to dry out. Hanslik says that all operating room procedures have been halted for the day. All other parts of the hospital are functioning as scheduled.

"It's just a slight disruption. Doctors and nurses are still doing exams as planned," Hanslik said

Hanslik says that the quick action and long hours put in by the clean up crew has made this more of a technical problem than a water damage problem.
