Governor Babatunde Fashola
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has called on the people of the state to support the governments efforts in curbing flood and ensuring safety of the aquatic habitat.
Fashola also enjoined residents to maximise the benefits inherent in nature to their advantage and for the well-being of the state.
The governor, who was represented by his Special Adviser on the Environment, Dr. Taofeek Folami, and the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, made this remark on Saturday, at the State House, Marina, during the 2014 Walk for Nature event themed Small Island Developing States: Focus on Coastal Areas.
The event, which was marked in partnership with Nigerian Conservation Foundation, was aimed at encouraging and promoting healthy living among Lagosians.
He said, This offers us another opportunity to focus on our environment and rededicate ourselves to its sustainability. It is high time we had a rethink and reviewed our strategies towards the management of coastal and marine issues, realign our implementation plans and partnership as well as redirect our efforts towards new set of goals.
In his address, Bello stated that Lagos as a coastal city was beset with several challenges such as illegal land reclamation and sand mining activities which had threatened sustainability of the coastlines.
He said illegal dredging had caused surges and flooding in some parts of the state.
He identified other environmental consequences of dredging as physical alterations, destruction of coastal habitats, flooding and pollution. He urged Lagosians to support the government in preserving nature by embracing the message of the Walk for Nature programme.
He added, When we walk for nature, we get closer to nature, we reduce vehicular emissions which contribute to global warming; as more vehicles will stay off roads, we experience world class bird watching, learn about the varied habitats, understand the management effort needed to develop and discover more about nature through our lively interpretation.

LARGO A crane tipped over as it was removing trees in Largo on Sunday, damaging three parked cars, a travel trailer and a neighboring home, authorities reported.
The operator, Danny Tomas of Sustainable Tree Service, was able to jump off the crane as it toppled. No one was hurt in the incident, which occurred at about 11:35 a.m. at 9142 Dream Way.
Tomas was using the heavy duty crane to remove a tree on the property of Melinda Jenkins, 50, who lives at 9115 Dream Way, deputies said.
As Tomas was removing the tree, which was damaged in a storm last week, the crane tipped and fell.
The crane damaged a Honda Civic owned by Megan Sampson, 54; a 2011 Rockwood trailer owned by Robert Fasoldt, 64; a 2003 Chevy Venture owned by Sandra Beard, 54; a 2003 Dodge 2500 van owned by Jeffrey Clause, 53; and the roof and base of Clause's home.
None of Jenkins' property was damaged.
Duke Energy responded to the scene because the crane also damaged a light pole.
Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies are conducting an investigation.

LARGO --
A heavy duty tree removal crane tipped over Sunday afternoon in Largo, smashing vehicles, a trailer and a home
But there were no injuries.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the home of50-year-old Melinda Jenkins, located on Dream Way in Largo after the 30,000 pound crane tipped over.
According to deputies, crane operator Danny Tomas of Sustainable Tree Service was able to jump off the crane safely after it began tipping over. Tomas was in the process of removing a large tree when the accident occurred.
The driver of the truck jumped off of the platform and landed in between the mailbox and that wood and did a little tuck and roll, things and spun down on to that ground and survived," said Jeffery Claus, whose home and van were damaged by the crane. "It was so scary I thought he was going to die.
Deputies say the crane caused damage to a Honda Civic owned by 54-year-old Megan Sampson; a 2011 Rockwood trailer owned by 64-year-old Robert Fasoldt; a 2003 Chevy Venture owned by 54-year-old Sandra Beard; and a 2003 Dodge 2500 van owned by 53-year-old Jeffrey Clause. Clauses' home also sustained severe damage to the roof and base.
Beard is just thankful she and the kids got out of the way in time.
Just asked him to move that van, and that crane fell on it," said Beard. "So thank God.
Tomas said a piece of equipment on the crane, called an outrigger, snapped which caused it all to tip over.

A woman has been awarded more than $35,000 after a bizarre series of events.
Isabela OSullivan, 61, was sitting on the toilet of her recently re-tiled bathroom when a tile fell, alarming her to the point that she fell forward onto the floor, reports Irish Times.
OSullivan injured her right knee in the fall and says she was so badly hurt that she laid on the floor for several minutes before calling a friend for help.
Since the accident, OSullivan reportedly has needed regular visits to the doctor, and physiotherapy.
X-Rays of OSullivans knee revealed a degenerative condition, reports The Daily Mail. The condition had not bothered her prior to the bathroom accident.
The bathroom in OSullivans home had been re-tiled a few weeks before, following a fire in her house in Rathsallagh Grove, Shankill, Ireland.
OConnell filed suit against contractor Neil Kelly, of Old Road, Monasterboice, Drogheda, Co Louth, who was hired by her insurance company to repair her home.
Kelly denied liability for the alleged negligence because he had contracted a tiler to complete the work.
Kelly added that OSullivans claim was fraudulent and that she pried the tile off the wall because she wanted different tiles after discovering not enough tiles were ordered to cover the bathroom walls.
In court it was reported that the 24 by 13 tile, weighing 6.6 lbs, broke the toilet seat when it fell.

The Fodder & Shine building site is a frenzy of construction, with contractors of all sorts trying to make a deadline for a soft opening for the Florida Cracker cuisine restaurant in early December, thus adding yet another funky destination to the growing lineup hot restaurants in Seminole Heights.
It was about a year ago when I last wrote about all the new places trying, hoping, praying to open up in Seminole Heights, the quiet bungalow neighborhood thats long been thought of as the next Hyde Park.
Now, lots of those places and a few more are expanding, opening or just about to: craft beer bars, coffee shops, liquor distillers, vegan/organic cafes and upscale sandwich shops where lamb shank is a core part of the menu.
Our goal is to show that passion of a chef-driven restaurant, said Michelle Baker, who with her husband and chef Greg Baker co-owns Fodder & Shine, along with The Refinery restaurant. There is nothing that doesnt grow in Florida, and we have some brilliant farmers. Our goal is to bring that, and classic Cracker cuisine-style recipes, back to life.
For sure, South Tampas dining scene is doing just fine, and corporate branded restaurants in the West Shore District are money-making operations. But whenever I talk with the power brokers and development honchos in Tampa, and I ask where they like to eat, more than a few get a glint in their eye and say something like, We just found this amazing place in Seminole Heights. Have you heard of it?
And to me, one of the surest signs that a neighborhood has reached a tipping point from perhaps a bit sketchy to a blossoming barrio are the cars parked out front. On any given night, the streets around Rooster & tThe Till, Ellas AmericanAmericana Folk Art Cafe and The Refinery are lined with BMWs, Range Rovers, Jaguars and perhaps a Bently or two.
Soon, there will be even more places for these brave foodie explorers to go:
At Fodder & Shine at 5910 N. Florida Ave., the menu will feature a long list of Florida-centric foods, from Yellowhammer steaks (from the centuries-old Florida breed with massive horns) to seafood from the Gulf and vegetables from local farms. The owners have a strategy of buying whole farm fields full of veggies, then bringing them to the restaurant for 24-hour canning sessions so chefs can pull them from Mason jars all year long. Besides an expansive kitchen and canning room, there will be an open-air patio, pool tables, classic arcade games, an expansive bar/lounge and plenty of room for expansion.
Angry Chair Brewing at 6401 N. Florida Avenue started brewing on Oct. 3 and is already stocking barrels of advanced and creative beers. That includes 30 barrels of Ascension IPA, 20 barrels of a German-style salted wheat beer and a hoppy red ale. Its public space is nearly ready, and operators hope to open the first week of November with a half-dozen beers made on site and plenty more other local brews alongside. Were going to brew beers we like to drink, said co-founder Ryan Dowdle. Well let your customers dictate what we need to make more of and that will develop into our core beers. http://angrychairbrewing.com/
Owners of the vegan and organic-focused Delicious Surprise restaurant plan to fully open their space in November at 5921 N. Nebraska Ave. in a former sandwich shop/former bodega/former gas station. A fundraising drive on GoFundMe helped get them off the ground, and soon theyll be serving healthier plant-based classic American comfort foods, said owner and founder Michelle Ehrlich. That means customizable bowls, but also veggie burgers, and pizzas and milkshakes, but all plant-based and no animal products, all from as many local sources as possible.
