Though farmers have immensely benefited from using pesticides, insects with resistance to chemicals have remained a major bottleneck. In such a scenario, using genes with potential for pest control is an ideal option, said Dr. Subba Reddy Palli, Professor of Entomology at the University of Kentucky.

Interacting with scientists from Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Tirupati, here recently, Dr. Reddy maintained that Ribonucleic Acid Interference-based pest management technology, wherein the double-stranded RNA is coupled with nano-scale material, had proved effective in the delivery of gene-silencing method to control pests. This pest management technology can also tackle pesticide resistance in beetles and bed bugs, and it will be made available to farmers in developed countries in the next three years, he added.

RARS Associate Director of Research T. Giridhara Krishna termed the development as the need of the hour, as majority of farmers in developing countries used huge quantity of pesticides. Indiscriminate use of pesticides has laced the produce with traces of chemicals. Apart from integrated pest management (IPM) technologies, adapting such practices will improve the quality of crops and provide chemical-free products to people, he said.

RARS Associate Dean N.P. Eswar Reddy, scientists T. Muralikrishna, P.K.N.V. Prasad, A Ramakrishna Rao, P. Ramana and Vasanthi were present.

Raleigh, N.C. After months of debate and court rulings, neighbors bonded together on Sunday to help with landscaping atcontroversial modern house in Raleigh's historic Oakwood neighborhood.

My idea was something like a barnraising, and we call it a yard raising," said Madonna Phillips, who organized the event. "We wanted to get all the neighbors together and do something positive where we could see some results immediately."

Marsha Gordon and Louis Cherry were granted necessary permits to build the contemporary house at 516 Euclid St., including a certificate of appropriateness from the Raleigh Historic Development Commission.

Construction on the house irked neighbors, who argued that the house didn't fit with the character of Oakwood, and they filed a complaint over it. That led the city's Board of Adjustment to reverse the certificate, which suspended construction on the home until a judge ruled in favor of the homeowners in September.

"It feels amazing. I mean, the reason we wanted to live in Oakwood is largely because of the community and the incredible people that live here," Gordon said Sunday.

Most neighbors were happy that the court battle over the home is mostly over. A neighbor who lives across from the home has appealed the judge's decision.

"Now they're moving forward," said Robin Vuchnich. "They're gonna be in their lovely home very soon, and I think most of the neighborhood wants to see that happen."

Gordon and Cherry plan to move into their new home by Dec. 1.

All the best young players in the region have been identified and recruited into the new Hockey NSW Accelerated Athlete Program.

However, with so many talented young female and male players, those who dont make the AAP program are eligible for the NIAS hockey program, NIAS girls squad head coach Andrew Farmilo said.

He was on hand to run the selection trials at the Tamworth Hockey Complex on Saturday.

He had some 11 players trialling, with a number of others unable to attend for various reasons.

Well have 16 in the squad, Farmilo said.

Were not sure about the boys at this stage.

FEINBERG FORECAST: The Oscar Landscape Post-Hamptons, Pre-AFI

A Stevensville family has a new home with the help of more than 100 dedicated volunteers, and one busy weekend.

The final bits of construction were being completed Sunday up at the construction site for Habitat for Humanitys Blitz Build, which put up the exterior of a house in just 72 hours.

Crews worked to put the shingles on the roof, while down on the ground the doors and windows were trimmed. On scaffold platforms teams finished installing the soffit material underneath the eaves so that the siding could be put on that afternoon.

Seven lumber mills from across Montana donated all of the wood being used in the house. This is the third time the wood products companies have partnered with Habitat for Humanity on a Blitz Build, having put up homes in Corvallis in 2003 and Missoula in 2000.

The amount of wood products donated included about 7,000 pounds of plywood and what Society of American Foresters Scott Keuhn called truckloads of bunks of 2-by-4s, each with 297 boards, with the donated material coming from as far away as Columbia Falls and Livingston.

Its one of the few houses where you can say every stick is all from Montana, said Mike Kibler, executive director of the Ravalli Habitat for Humanity.

Although the exterior construction was completed in three days, Habitat volunteer coordinator Erin Clark said the effort had been in the planning process since May. Work on the plumbing, wiring, dry wall and the rest of the work to finish the interior of the house will start as soon as the Blitz Build is done, but will done at a more relaxed pace.

In all, its going to be a 12-week build process, with the goal of having the family moved in by Christmas, Clark said.

Over the course of the three exterior building days, she said the site saw 140 volunteers lend their time to make the project a success. From experienced carpenters ready to jump right in to people who were putting on a hard hat for the first time, she said they found tasks for every skill level.

Sid and Ilene Reiff spend a lot of time at their Sun Lakes home. She's in hospice care and in bed most of time.

They've been married 25 years. "It feels like 40, but don't put that on the camera," joked Sid when we visited him at his home.

He contacted Call 12 for Action after he was unable ato cancel his contract with Monitronics Security, the alarm company that serviced his property. He reached representatives at the company and told them his wife was in hospice care at home.

Ilene suffers from COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and needs oxygen 24 hours a day. Because she's at home, the couple didn't need a security-alarm system anymore. When Sid Reiff explained that to company representatives this summer, he didn't get much sympathy, he said.

"They weren't interested. They wrote back, you're responsible for the contract," Sid said. "I was a little annoyed, and I told them I'm not paying any more money."

Our volunteers worked with Rob Washington, Monitronics customer service vice president, to get Sid's contract canceled. He no longer is bound to a three-year deal, meaninag he can concentrate on taking care of his wife without the stress of an unnecessary monthly payment.

"Thank you," Sid said.

Call 12 for Aciton saved him $1,900.

"It feels fine. It's in my pocket, not theirs," he said.
