Hundreds of Torres Strait Islanders have converged on Thursday Island for the biggest event on the region's sporting calendar.
The Zenadth Kes or Torres Strait Cup draws teams from several island communities each year, with some players arriving on dinghies to take part.
Seven men and three women teams have been battling through the ferocious heat of the day and into the night at the Ken Brown Memorial Oval since Friday.
Each tackle threw up plumes of dust and the relentless wind buffeted the the palm trees along the waterfront and gazebos around the field, where fans took shelter.
The fierce contest has seen local councillors pit their strength and skill against current and former NRL players including Timana Tahu and Travis Waddell.
So far two players have been taken from the field by ambulance suffering ankle and neck injuries.
But every match has ended with both sides forming a circle, interlocking arms, cheering for their opponent and celebrating unity and islander culture.
James Livok Ronson, 26, has travelled from Sydney to play for the Badu Island side Kulpiyam.
"It's good to see all the islands come in as one and this is our culture so this is what we do, we come here for football and have big family gatherings. It's just a privilege. Makes you feel good to be a Torres Strait Islander," he said.

Clark County residents are debating the future of the former Snyder Park golf course and their ideas on how to re-use the space in one of the oldest and largest parks in Springfield have ranged from an educational center to international gardens.
Local officials see the former golf course as an anchor that can tie many of the regions recreational assets together in the long run, said Pam Bennett, OSU Extension director.
The National Trail Parks and Recreation District is seeking input on what to do with the site, including holding meetings with residents and key stakeholders last week.
Much of those discussions focused on the potential of a roughly five-acre area near the former clubhouse. The Ohio State University Extension and Master Gardeners of Clark County plan to move their horticulture education gardens to the site from the current location on Gateway Boulevard, Bennett said.
The gardens on Gateway Boulevard already draw more than 1,500 people on guided tours to the site and have contributed about $4 million in economic impact since the late 1990s, Bennett said.
The five-acre area, which will be maintained by the Master Gardeners, will be manicured and ideally will eventually offer a variety of activities to draw residents from all over the region to the park, she said.
Were going to have a beautiful, pastoral site to host our gardens, Bennett said.
The golf course closed earlier this year as National Trail sought to make its golf operations financially sound.
Residents have suggested new uses for the area ranging from maintaining a single hole of golf at the site to nature trails to gardens featuring traditional farming methods from the 1700s. Several residents on hand also asked that the site be accessible for residents with disabilities, as well as offer items like park benches and gazebos for shade and rest.
Other suggestions included a beer garden, cooking classes, an educational center or meditation area.

Despite being a beaten favourite on his comeback at Chepstow last weekend he showed far more enthusiasm than in the second half of last season and Lavelle hopes she may have a viable contender for the big race itself on her hands come April.
"He's a very frustrating horse as he has tonnes of ability," she said.
"What happens is he puts all his effort into his early races of the season which is why his form tails off.
"He just does what he wants, he goes out and gallops and jumps but because you can't tell him what to do if he gets taken on for the lead he goes half a stride too quick.
"That means that come the end of the race he has used up too much petrol.
"He's come out of the race well and I was far happier with that than with any of his efforts in the second half of last season.
"We'll stick to our original plan and go for the Becher Chase next as long as it is not bottomless. I think he'll take to the National fences and while it might be a long way off you'd have to be thinking of the big one if he enjoys it there."
Lavelle also has some nice targets in mind for Fox Appeal who ran a nice race under a big weight at Market Rasen on his first run of the campaign.

SEOUL: South Korean police said on Sunday (Oct 19) no safety personnel were deployed at an outdoor pop concert where a ventilation grate collapsed, killing 16 people and injuring nine others.
"From the beginning, there were no safety personnel for the concert," a police spokesman told reporters, according to Yonhap news agency, after about 20 people were questioned over the incident on Friday in the city of Seongnam south of Seoul.
Those questioned included officials of Edaily, a domestic Internet news provider which financed and organised the concert attended by more than 700 people, Yonhap said. A local government official in charge of safety committed suicide Saturday by jumping off a building near the site after he was questioned by police.
The victims were standing on a ventilation grating to get a better view when the structure collapsed under their weight, sending them plunging 18.7 metres (62 feet) into an underground parking area. Amateur video footage obtained by television stations showed shocked spectators surrounding the collapsed grate as the popular all-girl K-pop band 4Minute, apparently oblivious to the accident, continued performing on stage.
Witnesses have told media there were no security guards or safety fences to prevent spectators overflowing, with dozens of people chanting and dancing on the grating despite warnings by show organisers.
Edaily chairman Kwak Jea-sun apologised to the victims' families and said he would take responsibility for the tragedy, including compensation. "An unexpected incident happened due to structural problems and negligence," he said. Experts described the incident as another "man-made" disaster.
"Over the past decades, economic expansion always took precedence over safety concerns, resulting in a lack of safety consciousness among Koreans," said Seoul National University professor Chung Jae-hee.
The country is still grappling with the aftermath of the Sewol ferry disaster in April that left more than 300 dead, most of them high school students. That tragedy prompted government promises of a national review of safety standards, as it became clear that poor regulatory oversight was a major contributor to the scale of the tragedy.
In February, the roof caved in at a student-packed auditorium near the southern city of Gyeongju, killing 10 people and injuring more than 100. An investigation found structural flaws and lax management controls. In 2005, 11 people were crushed to death and nearly 80 injured in a stampede as thousands tried to enter a stadium venue.

There are many honest contractors out there, but there are also quite a few that might be looking to rip you off. If youre about to undertake a big renovation project, here are a few red flags to look out for before you hire a contractor.
Asking For Too Much Money Up Front
Most contractors wont start a job without getting part of the payment upfront. After all, there are materials to buy and workers to hire. But a contractor that wants the entire sum up front should set off alarm bells. Once you fork over the cash for a project, a contractor might lose the motivation to finish the job quickly and efficiently. For most jobs, a downpayment of around 15 percent is common, and an initial payment should never exceed a third of the total cost of the project.
Asks for Cash Payments
Some contractors will ask to be paid in cash, which is a sure sign that there is something shady going on. Without a check or credit card statement to back you up, it becomes your word versus the contractors in any payment dispute. So even if a contractor offers you a cheaper rate if you pay in cash, dont take the deal.
Too Many Subcontractors
A good contractor will know how to use subcontractors wisely. For instance, if theres a particularly tricky wiring job, its a good idea to call in an expert electrician. But a contractor who is overly reliant on subcontractors should raise some red flags. If a contractor is farming most of the work out to subcontractors, then hes acting more like an unnecessary middleman rather than a essential part of the renovation process.
Wont Give You References
If a contractor refuses to give you references, its a sure sign that something is amiss. Every contractor should have a few pleased customers that can vouch for past jobs. If a contractor says hes just starting out and doesnt have references yet, take a pass and find someone with more experience.
