This year so far has had a number of information security incidents that have cost likely billions of dollars, and they've cost even more as damage to the reputations of some well-known businesses. US retailer Target, Home Depot, Apple, Sony, JP Morgan Chase, and the list goes on.
But for each attack that makes the mainstream news headlines, such as the Russian attack on JP Morgan, there are at least thousands or possibly millions of attacks that don't make the news. They usually affect smaller businesses and institutions, but there are many, many more of them.
According to the 2014 Symantec Internet Security Threat Report, in 2013:
Website, web database, and point-of-sale system attacks caused the identities of 552 million users to be stolen, with an average of 2,181,891 identities per breach. 552 million online identities is nearly one in five of the roughly 2.8 billion people estimated to use the Internet that year.
One in 196 emails was estimated to contain malware.
One in 566 websites were estimated to contain malware.
351 web browser vulnerabilities were found in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Opera. As most lesser known web browsers share a layout engine, such as WebKit, Gecko, or Trident with one of the top five web browsers, many vulnerabilities that affect a major web browser also affect many less common web browsers.
Something as simple as a single malware file, malicious email, or network vulnerability can cost a business a lot of money in stolen data, litigation, or even mere computer and network downtime. All businesses with computer networks are at risk of information security attacks.
Prevention is indeed the best medicine. Creating and enforcing a well-designed IT security policy makes your business less likely to be subject to attacks, and less often. But absolutely nothing can be made 100% secure.
So, the perfect complement to sound prevention with a good IT security policy is well prepared incident response. A well trained and vigilant Computer Security Incident Response Team is crucial.

Raising New Orleans area east bank earthen hurricane levees by a foot or two before allowing theArmy Corps of Engineers to install a combination of geotextile mat and Bermuda grass sod asarmoring against erosion caused by overtopping will cost the east bank levee authority between $40 million and $50 million, authority members were told Thursday (Oct. 16).
A more detailed estimate will be presented to theSoutheast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East by its staff in November, executive director Robert Turner said, after additional meetings to discuss the costs and the extent of the levee raising with corps officials next week.
The additional soil is needed to assure that the levees will continue to be high enough through 2028 to block storm surges caused by a hurricane with a 1 percent chance of occurring in any year, often referred to as a 100-year storm.
Without the additional soil "lift," officials would have to rip out the millions of dollars of geotextile mat used to armor the levee in a few years, when portions of the levees sink beneath the one percent protection level and the levees would need to be raised. A failure to raise the levees when they sink could result in the system being decertified, which could result in residents and businesses in the area losing flood insurance, or seeing higher flood insurance rates.
Most of the work will be required in Jefferson Parish and New Orleans. Most of the levees in St. Bernard Parish are topped by T-walls that were built about 3 feet higher than the surge height expected today, and won't require height adjustments for another 40 to 50 years.
Turner said the East Jefferson Levee District would rely on money it has and will have in its levee improvement fund, and on money it would request from the state's capital outlay budget for the lifts on its levees. The authority approved a resolution later in the meeting to request $29.6 million be included in next year's state capital outlay budget for the lifts there.
The Orleans Levee District's budget will have to be amended to address the increased cost, but at first glance, existing taxes are high enough to pay for the costs, he said.
The authority acts as the board of both the levee districts.
The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-West is considering similar levee lifts in advance of armoring installation. The corps says thearmoring of all earthen levees on both sides of the river will cost about $300 million.
Authority member Rick Luettich, a civil engineer and professor of marine science at the University of North Carolina, questioned whether existing estimates of how high the levees should be are adequate, given a recent study for the authority that indicated the corps' storm surge modeling was already outdated.

Cheltenham Festival 2015. Click here to bet.
The five-year-old was a stunning winner of the Cheltenham Festival curtain-raiser in March and made it five from five for Ireland's champion trainer when stepped up in trip at Punchestown in early May.
Owner Rich Ricci reported at the start of the month another of his prized assets, Faugheen, would remain over hurdles this term and now his trainer has confirmed the intention is for Vautour to go over the larger obstacles.
Mullins said: "Vautour will probably go over fences.
"The ground has been so fast that you wouldn't really want to school horses at the moment. The horses are still heavy and you want to keep them sound.
"They came back in very heavy this year and I would say it's the best summer grass we've ever had. There was such great growth.''
Another hugely exciting runner for the Mullins-Ricci combination is the brilliant mare Annie Power.
The six-year-old has been successful in 11 of her 12 starts, with her only defeat coming when runner-up in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Mullins has not yet decided whether she will remain over timber or go chasing this term, but has not ruled out mixing the two.

ROCKVILLE - With less than three weeks until the 2014 general elections, candidates are making a last-minute push to appeal to voters. In the June primary, few incumbents lost their seats and many expect to be voted back into office in November.
The Democratic County Council candidates are already preparing for their tenure on the council despite one having a Republican contender. At a recent press conference Council President Craig Rice, who said he ousted the last republican to hold office in 2006 with his election to the state House of Delegates, said he doesnt expect a Republican to win in Montgomery County where Democrats outnumber Republicans 3-1.
Congressional District 6 Republican candidate Dan Bongino expects to change that. At the announcement of his candidacy in 2013, Bongino told his supporters Republicans deserved a say and they will win back the four seats they lost. Bongino, a former secret service agent who has worked with three presidential administrations, ran against Ben Cardin in the 2012 senate race. He said he easily won District 6, which is heavily Republican.
Montgomery County cares about the things people in the same county care about, jobs, education, and these things are no different. Were the only campaign that is talking about real solutions for job growth, the out of control tax rate, giving people control of their healthcare system back and weve been the only campaign to put out real solutions for that. We havent had any problems in Montgomery County, Bongino said.
Bonginos platform includes a stay on tax rates, Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) reform and a change to the rain tax.
How did we lose the argument that we were the genuine legitimate party for Americans middle class? The Republican party forgot the working class a long time ago. I was a grave digger, my father a plumber, my brother an electrician and I only became a secret service agent later on. How we became the party of rich oil barons is beyond me. When the liberals win in Maryland, like they always do, everybody loses; when we win, the liberals lose nothing. When the liberals win, more money comes out of your pocket and you lose control of your healthcare, and you cant pick where your kids go to school thats why people leave the most beautiful state in the union. What happens when we win? When we win, we take nothing from them. Their wallets get fatter and their businesses grow, they get their own healthcare back and they get to pick where their kids go to school. Nobody loses. Bongino said.
Neither Bongino nor his opponent incumbent John Delaney live in District 6. Bongino lives in District 2s Severna Park and Delaney lives in District 8s Potomac. Less than a million people live in District 6, many of them in Montgomery County. The district includes Potomac, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Poolesville, Clarksburg, Frederick and all of Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties. Republicans outnumber Democrats 2-1 in Frederick, Washington and Allegany counties.
Bongino said he is running a grass-roots campaign which includes phone calls, knocking on 20,000 doors 6,000 of which Bongino said he knocked on personally and attending community events.
