Fences specialist primed to strike at Wetherby

    - October 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ITS a sure sign that were in the depths of autumn when Wetherby re-opens its doors for the start of its major jumps campaign and todays curtain-raiser at the popular Yorkshire course is staged in support of Spinal Research and embraces a seven-race card.

One of the highlights is the 10,000 Bobby Renton Handicap Chase, in which racegoers may be drawn towards the peerless Tony McCoy aboard Jonjo ONeills Foundation Man, or the James Reveley-ridden Shadrack, winner of his last two races.

Both those horses, however, are reappearing after a break and their fitness has to be taken on trust. Perhaps a better proposition may be Alderbrook Lad, trained at Middleham by Micky Hammond and a horse who ran well to finish third over hurdles at Sedgefield recently.

Now back over the major obstacles, Alderbrook Lad, a previous winner on this course, has scored four times over fences. He is napped to add to his tally this afternoon with Joe Colliverin the saddle.

The 10,000 racing UK Anywhere Available Now Handicap Chase over two miles is the joint most valuable race on the card and offers Toledo Gold the chance to follow up his recent Hexham win, where he made all the running.

The handicapper has raised the Maurice Barnes-trained gelding 7lb for that success, but Barnes has engaged the services of 7lb claimer Stephen Mulqueen to erase that rise. He could take plenty of catching.

The Spinal Research Rachel Wright Memorial Hurdle - named in honour of the lady from Stamford Bridge who was such a driving force behind this charity day for many years - is a head-scratcher for punters. Most of the runners are Flat recruits making their jumping debuts, but at least Final Countdown has had the benefit of a recent outing over hurdles.

John Quinns charge was not totally convincing before finishing second at Bangor, but that experience should have had a beneficial effect on this dual-Flat winner.

Also worth noting at Wetherby are the fit from the Flat Goodwood Mirage (3.25), another of McCoys mounts, and recent winner Orbys Man (4.35), from the Charlie Longsdon stable which was successful on this card 12 months ago.

On the Flat at Nottingham, Hazelrigg makes appeal in the Racing Specials At 32RedSport.com Handicap over five furlongs.

Reports: Mets To Move In Fences Once More At Citi Field

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) The incredible shrinking stadium is about to get another makeover.

The chronically run-starved New York Mets are moving in the fences again at Citi Field, according to multiple reports.

The team made a round of changes prior to the 2012 season, shortening the dimensions throughout and most notably nixing the Great Wall of Flushing in left field.

This time, the walls will reportedly be brought in only in the areas of center and right field. Work is slated to begin after the World Series, the New York Daily News reported.

Its not about tailoring the ballpark to a particular player or a particular composition of team, general manager Sandy Alderson said last month, acknowledging the possibility of new dimensions at the cavernous ballpark. Its about making Citi Field as fan-friendly and as exciting as we can make it.

The hope is that altered fences and a new hitting coach will boost the power numbers in Flushing, especially for stars David Wright and Curtis Granderson. The Mets hit seven fewer home runs at home (59) than on the road (66) in 2014. They also suffered a dip in average (.224 to .242) and runs (286 to 343).

On the flip side, could the the Mets a team built around young pitchers Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jacob deGrom and the emerging Noah Syndergaard be sabotaging themselves without even knowing it?

Manager Terry Collins doesnt think so.

Paul Ryan swings for the fences in new ad

    - October 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

updated 9:57 AM EDT, Wed October 15, 2014

Washington (CNN) -- Rep. Paul Ryan wants you to know, he steps "right up to the plate."

That's according to a new video ad that hit YouTube on Tuesday -- no pun intended.

"Notice how my kids hit," Ryan says over a clip of him throwing an underhand pitch to two children who smack the baseball for what is undoubtedly a base hit. "They step right up to the plate. That's what I've tried to do in Congress -- step up to the plate."

But that last line comes with a smiling Ryan knocking one out of the park. He must have since he doesn't make a run towards first.

"When it comes to protecting taxpayers' money, I will always step up to the plate because you deserve a government that respects your hard work," Ryan declares.

The 2012 Republican vice presidential pick didn't snag the No. 2 post, but he easily won reelection that year in the Wisconsin district he's represented since 1998.

But the ad might have a broader audience than voters in his home district. Ryan won't say yet whether he'll make a run for the White House in 2016, but he is widely viewed as a potential contender for his party's nomination.

JPs to take up repeal of 'whites only' drinking fountain ordinance

    - October 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Pulaski County Quorum Court at its meeting Tuesday night will take up the repeal of a 64-year-old ordinance that allows businesses to designate "whites only" drinking fountains.

The repeal measure's sponsor, Justice of the Peace Donna Massey of Little Rock, said the long-forgotten ordinance was recently discovered to be still on the books. There's no indication anyone in the county abides or even knows about the pre-civil-rights era ordinance, but Massey said it's important to take action.

"This does not reflect the current realities of Pulaski County," she said. "However, symbolically it exists and it needs to be removed. It is, I guess you would say, an affront to the non-white citizens of the county."

Massey said she began investigating the ordinance's history after receiving a forwarded email in late September of an old photo of a drinking fountain with a "whites only" sign above it. The sign in the photo also included an ordinance number, she said.

With that, officials began researching its history. She said they initially believed ordinances older than 1977 were not considered active, but ultimately determined that wasn't the case and the one in question was still law.

So Massey sponsored a new ordinance to repeal it. It's the seventh item on the court's new business agenda Tuesday night.

"This is the only thing you can do, bring it before the Quorum Court and vote to repeal it," she said. "I trust that as a body we will definitely vote to get this repealed."
