    Yale goes digital

Home security with high-tech security locks

Yale is taking a step further in home security by going digital with high-tech security locks. The digital locks come with a range of features, including an alarm and an additional security beyond pin codes. These digital locks are aimed for corporate offices.

The Yale YDR3110 and the YDG313 has two access solutions: The pin code and an RF card key. The former has an invisible keypad, which reveals itself only when the user touched the screen with their palm, while the latter has a Magic Mirror, which reveals the keys upon touching them. They both have a fire alarm, which detects smoke and temperature reaching 60 degrees Celsius.

    YDG313

The first image on the right is the YDR3110s indoor side, it shows spinning bolts, which makes it difficult to saw them off. The YDG313 has a visitor code, which works once after use. This means if the user is expecting someone, they could set up the visitor code, which the guest will use to gain entry. This digital lock is designed for frameless glass doors.

The YDR4110 sets itself apart by having the one-touch Fingerprint verification swifter access.

While all that was mentioned so far had been leaning more toward the corporate side, the YDM3212 was designed for home use. From inside the home, the door can be unlocked any time, however, from outside, a pin code is required before it unlocks. The first image below shows the proximity card being used to unlock the YDM3212.

Each of the digital locks needs four alkaline batteries, which is believed would last eight to twelve months. Each of these devices has a panel underneath, where a 9-volt battery can fit. This is for instances where batteries have ran out while the user is outside.

As technology move forward, the sophistication of gadgets lessens on your side, making it harder for any intruder to break in.

Talking Business: Longview entrepreneur finds success with home security business

    - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rural, idyllic Silver Lake may not seem like fertile turf for selling security and alarm systems, but for Chris Sturm, having a home alarm is all about peace of mind.

Your neighbors are close but not overly close, so its nice to have the extra protection, Sturm said on Friday. After using another company for 25 years, Sturm said she was tired of having an outdated system so switched to Universal Security and Alarm Inc., to bring her home system up to date.

Sturm is just one of the 200 customers Universal Security has signed on since opening its doors in April. The Longview company offers residential and commercial alarm systems, medical alert buttons and fire monitors to customers in Washington, Oregon and California.

Prior to starting Universal, owner Aaron Wenner worked for another alarm systems company for over three years while running a side business with his wife Lacey. They were partners in Great Vapes, which offered supplies for users of vaporizers and e-cigarettes. Great Vapes, located in Longview, never gained traction in the area, and Wenner is in the process of selling off all of Great Vapes inventory. University Security operates out of the same address at 1429 15th Avenue.

Wenner was looking for a fresh start. Seeing the profitability of the alarm industry, and noticing areas where he thought his employer could improve, Wenner decided to break off and form his own company.

Wenner acts as a dealer working under the umbrella of the Monitronics Security System, a Dallas-based company and one of ADTs major competitors. After signing on customers and installing the hardware, Universal sells the contracts to Monitronics, which then offers 24-hour monitoring. Local police or fire officials are alerted if the alarms are activated.

Unlike old-school alarm systems, which operate off of a telephone line, Universals systems are completely wireless, using cell towers and WiFi to monitor spaces. These wireless systems are more secure, according to Wenner, since anyone can easily find an Internet video detailing how to disable a landline alarm system by cutting the telephone wire outside the building.

Wireless operation also means the system can be controlled remotely using a smartphone app. Customers can close garage doors, turn on lights and access remote video from their home security cameras using the app. Thats important for Sturm, who said she spends a lot of time away from her home travelling since retiring in 2013.

I can pull it up on smartphone and turn on lights and turn on the heat, I can do different things that I couldnt do (with the other system), she said. Sturm added that she and her husband Gene have referred several clients to the service.

Wenner depends on that word-of-mouth marketing, along with door-to-door salesmen, to bring in new customers. Big clients include Grocery Outlet stores in Vancouver and Tacoma, as well Les Schwab in Vancouver. Wenner is counting on his competitive pricing and high-tech equipment to continue to expand his customer base.

EasyTurf Scheduled to Showcase Industry Leading, Environmentally Friendly Synthetic Turf at Greenbuild International

    - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW ORLEANS, La. (PRWEB) October 12, 2014

EasyTurf is scheduled to showcase their industry leading, environmentally friendly synthetic turf at the Greenbuild International Expo Oct. 22, 23 In New Orleans.

EasyTurf will unveil a booth that showcases the intricate energy saving and water conscious systems associated with their fastest growing artificial grass applications, pet, rooftop, playground and commercial landscapes. The EasyTurf artificial grass system can be largely engineered with recycled products, adding to the environmentally friendly nature of synthetic turf.

EasyTurf has been an innovator of synthetic grass landscaping and has taken a leading role in educating consumers of our many benefits, said Dave Hartman, EasyTurf President. Were excited to join the Greenbuild community of professionals and present the diversity of EasyTurf and our ability to improve homes, businesses, and ultimately, quality of life, while at the same time, conserving our natural resources.

Stop by the booth to learn how artificial grass fits into green roof design. When natural grass is a part of landscape irrigation costs, 60% of those costs go to watering sod - not only is the water conserved [when artificial grass is installed] but so is the energy that would be used to get that 60% of irrigation from point a to point b, said Jackie Luper, EasyTurf Vice President, Marketing. Because of the UV protection, artificial grass extends the life of existing roof membranes by up to 20 years artificial grass in rooftop applications has also been shown to help insulate buildings keeping cold air in and hot air out in hot weather, and hot air in and cold air out in cold weather.

Advancements in synthetic turf technology have increased the list of applications available to consumers. Lawns and putting greens are now just a fraction of EasyTurf's installations. The green roof industry has been growing aggressively since 2009, up about 115 percent thanks to companies and organizations like Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC), Cities Alive, EasyTurf, and the more than 425 accredited Green Roof Professionals (GRPs) in the market. EasyTurf is one of the most effective water conservation products available to green building industry professionals. EasyTurf is 100 percent recyclable, reduces carbon emissions, utilizes waste and preserves precious water resources.

EasyTurfs superior synthetic grass products are matched by a dedication to exceptional craftsmanship and customer service, Hartman said. Our commitment to excellence continues to attract homeowners and commercial businesses searching for functional, aesthetic improvements.

World renowned dog whisperer, Cesar Millan recently introduced EasyTurf artificial grass as his turf-of-choice for pet owners. Millan says drainage was critical in his decision to partner with EasyTurf on the 10,000 sq. ft. installation of artificial grass at his Dog Psychology Center in Santa Clarita, Calif.

We have a lot of land to cover, so its important to me that our landscaping is easy to care for, safe for our pack and has proper drainage, said Millan. Not only does Easy Turf look just like natural grass, it helps to eliminate common lawn problems associated with pets like brown spots from urine, tracked in mud, grass clippings and it can even deter your dog from digging holes.

EasyTurf, the landscape division of FieldTurf, plays an important role in environmentally friendly lawns, recreational fields, playgrounds and energy conservation plans for communities throughout North America. More than 30,000 attendees and 900 exhibiters from across the U.S. and around the world are expected to gather at the Morial Convention Center. The seven-year-old won a handicap hurdle at the same meeting last year before adding another Cheltenham success the following month and eventually finished second to Don Poli in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle at the Festival itself.

Thomas Crapper is now due to switch to the bigger obstacles with trainer Robin Dickin looking forward to a return to the gelding's favourite track.

He said: ``Thomas Crapper has done fabulously over the summer and the time has come to go over fences with him. He was actually ready to go chasing last year and we thought that the icing on the cake would be to give him a run over hurdles first.

``He had already schooled around Towcester this time last year and we thought that we would have a nice day out at Cheltenham at the start of last season but he won, so we decided to stick to hurdles.

``It was a shame that we came up against Don Poli at The Festival but there's only one thing you can say about coming second - it is better than finishing third!

``He needs plenty of pace in his races and I am looking forward to going chasing with him because he can be ridden a lot handier. He was always a bit free over hurdles, which meant we had to drop him out early, but he won't be ridden the same over fences.

``We have always regarded him as a chaser - he is a big, fine horse and a very good jumper.''

Thomas Crapper is one of 11 entries for the 20,000 heat with Evan Williams' talented hurdler Court Minstrel, who made a winning start to his chasing career at Newton Abbot at the end of September, and Solar Impulse from Paul Nicholls' yard also in the mix.

Guilford County Non-Profit Helps Families Find Fences for Dogs

    - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Visit the Unchain Guilford website

Unchain Guilford formed after county commissioners passed an ordinance last year banning unattended backyard dog tethering.

Sunday, about a dozen volunteers with the organization built a fence for Vanessa Ratlife's dog, Patches.

"I love that he's going to be free, and he can run and he can be happy, Ratlife said. He won't have to be chained up anymore and have other dogs fight with him."

This is the third fence Unchain Guilford has built, and its goal is to build two per month. Its helping families who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it.

"We used a welded wire fence, said Ellen Metzger with Unchain Guilford. It comes in big rolls at the home improvement store. It's very cost effective. We don't use chain link because it's more expensive. We use 2'x4's and it's really a quick and affordable way to get a fence up. It's also very secure, and dogs can't dig or jump over it."

Volunteers say one thing they've learned along the way through this process is that everything doesn't have to be exactly right.

Its giving dogs the happier lives their families want for them.

It's so wonderful because I know I wouldn't have been able to pay for a fence. It's not on my income, Ratliffe said. When they told me they could do it, I thought I was going to sing! It was just a wonderful feeling."

For the organization to build the fence, a family must meet certain financial qualifications and have the dog spayed or neutered, along with a rabies shot.

Unlikely muralist creates works of art on fences

Allen Russell never trained as an artists but the murals he's created on the fences around his yard are true works of art.

If someone showed these colorful, detailed exterior murals to Allen Russell and told him that the artist is a novice who never tried to do art before, "I'd think they were lying," he said.

But Russell is the artist, and he insists he first picked up the paint on June 28 of this year.

"I'm 47 years old, and this is totally new to me," Russell said. "I have no art training. I suck at using a brush. I can't even draw well. But I know how to use a spray can!"

He added that his wife, Kimberly, who teaches English as a second language courses at Clark College, and his daughter Dramma, a ninth-grader at Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, "can both attest" to his lack of background as an artist.

"It's like discovering you can play the piano, and you'd just never tried," he said.

Why did he? Because of life and death.

Russell is a multi-instrumentalist who hasn't been able to make a living at music, he said, and he's a newly trained piano tuner who's trying to drum up some business. Meanwhile, a friend from California has made a killing as a muralist, he said. He's also a Gulf War-era military veteran who didn't see combat but emerged with post-traumatic stress disorder nonetheless, he said.

"Painting calms restlessness brought on by military service," he wrote in an email.

    Wasleys shows community spirit

    - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

IT might have a population of under 400, but Wasleys is a small town achieving big things.

On October 18, the Wasleys Institute will be a hive of activity as the inaugural 'Showcasing Wasleys' event kicks off.

To be held from 3pm to 7pm, the initiative encourages local businesses and tradespeople to show off their wares and skills.

Wasleys Community Group secretary and operator of the town's post office Dawn Richter said the project was created to build community spirit and lift the local economy.

"We've had lots of new people move into town with the new building estate, and we have people come in all the time asking me if there's an electrician or a plumber or something around in the town," Dawn said.

"I thought we needed to organise some way of letting people in the community know about the skills that they have."

She said new residents often assumed they would need to head to a larger regional centre to find tradespeople, but this was not the case.

"If someone needs a plumber or an electrician, or they're looking to get something built, they'll go outside of Wasleys, not realising that we have those skills in our own town and in our own community.

"If we all work together and promote and support each other, then our local people will thrive and our community as a whole will thrive - that's the plan.

"People don't necessarily have to use the local people, but at least if they know they're out there, they can ring them and get a quote. If it works out, it's a win-win for everyone in the community."
