The design of the Qasr al Sarab resort in Abu Dhabi blends with the desert landscape.

A room with a view is precious. When you book a hotel room, there is added value attached to a view of a quaint garden fountain, the ocean or a mere peek at a mountain range. If you are a family that enjoys staycations, there should be just as much value placed on any open space and what lies beyond your own yard.

I am reminded while traveling around our county how fortunate we San Diegans are to have an impressive assortment of extraordinary views from a wide number of neighborhoods.

Near Balboa Park, you might have expansive views east of canyons, rooftops and the Cuyamaca Mountains, the same mountains visible from Mission Bay high-rise structures. South Park offers views of the same eastern geometry, but also an interesting angle on San Diego Bay.

From the rim of Fashion Valley or City Heights, you peer straight down the San Diego River bed and see where the Pacific meets our sadly anemic river. Ridge lots in eastern-facing parts of Encinitas hover over the San Dieguito River bed and all of Rancho Santa Fe. And no one needs to remind those homeowners hugging Mount Soledad on both sides of the amazing blue-water views.

Its all a classic California landscape dotted with eucalyptus, sage, palm trees of every variety and tempting azure waters from Imperial Beach up to Encinitas.

Which brings me back to the subject of views and what to do about yours. The example in this photo is nothing if not exotic. Taken at the Qasr al Sarab resort nestled on the edge of the Liwa Desert in Abu Dhabi, rooms here are the epitome of luxury. But what strikes me more is that when you experience an interior that is clearly tapped into the feeling and sensation of the view, a magical experience can result.

Now you dont have a backyard in Abu Dhabi, I know. But perhaps your yard overlooks the amazing Mission Trails Regional Park. Are not those canyons and hills spectacular? Could you not pull colors from nature to extend your living space into your backyard or onto your deck? What would a color scheme based on a moss green, tan, charcoal gray and black do for you, with pops of red or a buttery gold? Look at your blooming shrubs for inspiration.

It is notable that this serene exterior room blends into the color of sands beyond. This is the precise reason that the view pulls you out into that fading landscape. Is it really so different from looking down Peasquitos Canyon from Carmel Valley homes or backyards in the Santa Luz development? We are, in case you didnt notice this past summer, really living in the Southern California desert, and that means that we all should be rethinking how we use our exterior spaces.

    ........................................................................................................................................................................................

DEAR BARRY: In some of your articles, you advise people to hire home inspectors who have errors and omissions insurance (E&O).

Ive been a home inspector for 15 years and have avoided E&O insurance for four important reasons: 1) Insurance does not prove that a home inspector is qualified; 2) Insurance covers the inspector if he is sued, but it does not insure the homebuyer against financial loss for an undisclosed defect; 3) If a home inspector does his job well, he doesnt need insurance; 4) Having insurance attracts frivolous lawsuits. What do you think about these objections? Jeff

Dear Jeff: Regarding errors and omissions insurance, there are two schools of thought among home inspectors, and both have some merit. In response to your four arguments against E&O, here are some points and counterpoints:

On two of your points, we can agree: E&O insurance is not essential to every home inspection company, and E&O coverage does not indicate whether a home inspector is truly qualified.

In fact, some of the best home inspectors work without insurance for one of the very points that you made: namely, that insurance can be a magnet for baseless lawsuits.

As most people know, we live in a litigious business climate in which attorneys name as many defendants as possible in order to get as many settlements as possible. The deep pockets provided by an insurance company can definitely attract that kind of trouble.

On the other hand, frivolous lawsuits can be filed against a home inspector, even when there is no E&O insurance. Case in point: There was an ongoing lawsuit against a termite inspector for failure to disclose damaged wood in a home.

The plaintiffs attorney decided to name the home inspector in the suit. The home inspector, by law, was not required to disclose termites, so there was no basis for the complaint against him.

Nevertheless, he had to hire an attorney and eventually settled for thousands of dollars. With E&O insurance, he would have paid the deductible and walked away from the problem.

Home Security Camera Video Shows Deadly Police-Involved Shooting

    - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Glenn McEntyre Saturday October 11, 2014 11:00 PM UPDATED: Saturday October 11, 2014 11:33 PM

Home security camera video captured the confrontation between Columbus police and robbery suspects that left two people dead.

The video emerged Saturday as police released new information on the deadly confrontation.

Police said the incident started with an armed robbery Friday night at the Dollar General store on Alum Creek Drive. Police confronted and killed two of the suspects as they were trying to get away.

They are withholding the names of the two people killed by officers while they notify their families. Officers have identified the two suspects in custody as 20 year old Aarin Clinkscale and 17 year old Savon Dearmond.

Security camera video obtained by 10tv shows the suspect vehicle parking on Greenery Drive, one block away from the Dollar General store. Two figures get out of the car, and walk away. The car then pulls forward, turns around, and re-parks across the street. Approximately five minutes later, the video shows two figures returning to the car. They walk just past it, then turn around and appear to get in the back seat. Before the car door is pulled closed, police move in from behind and in front, penning in the suspects' vehicle. Officers emerge from their vehicles, the back door of the suspects' vehicle opens, and a suspect runs toward the rear of the car. He suddenly drops to the ground, presumably the moment he was shot by police.

The shooting happened just outside Sharon Prilaman's home. She and her 9 year old son were in their living room when she said they first heard intense yelling. "My son went to go to the window. I said, 'Bobby get away from the window! Something could be going on.' And by the time I go to get up, I hear buh-boom buh-boom boom-boom. I immediately grab my son, pull him to the floor. I got over top of him. We crawled to the bathroom." said Prilaman.

She called 911, and the operator told her police were on the scene.

That's because they had staked out the store after a series of hold-ups at Dollar Generals. They were already in place when they said the suspects held employees and customers at gunpoint. And when the suspects tried to escape, they were surrounded.

Prilaman saw one of the bodies lying in the street covered with a sheet. "It's just heartbreaking and it's sad and you wonder, what made them do this? What made them go this way? Why?" Prilaman asked.
