HYDERABAD: Reclassified as a "very severe cyclonic storm" by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hudhud continued to gather force ahead of reaching Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh by Sunday. The cyclone will persist for nearly six hours post-landfall in the morning and peak by noon. It is expected to subsequently weaken over the next six hours while moving north-westwards across south Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
Andhra officials said they will temporarily relocate 5 lakh people, who will be accommodated across 370 relief camps by Sunday morning. Srikakulam and East Godavari, expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone's fury, account for the maximum number of evacuations. By Saturday afternoon, officials claim over 1.1 lakh people had already been evacuated.
Though not a "super cyclone", the Met on Saturday night upgraded the possible wind speed of the cyclonic storm from 155kmph to 195kmph. Met officials warned that strong winds and heavy rainfall were likely to disrupt electricity and telecommunications services as well as road and rail traffic along the coast.

As the severity of the storm is expected to intensify, the weather department says all nine coastal districts may be affected. Allaying concerns, Union earth science minister Jitendra Singh said Hudhud is "very severe" in scientific terms, but certainly not a "super cyclone". He appealed to people "not to get unduly alarmist" because the concerned departments are already geared up for any eventuality.
Modi briefed
In an emergency high-level meeting to review preparedness on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed on evacuation and other precautionary and preparatory measures being undertaken for coping with the cyclone. The PM asked home minister Rajnath Singh to remain in touch with the chief ministers of the states likely to be affected by it.
The official statement said, "He (Modi) instructed senior officers of the union government to maintain close contact and coordination with officers of the affected states to ensure that relief and rescue operations proceed smoothly. He said suitable arrangements should be made to inform people about the cyclone on a real-time basis."
With Bonda Ghati being expected to be the worst sufferers for the cyclonic storm Hudhud, as a precautionary measure, the Malkangiri district administration evacuated primitive Bonda tribe to Mudulipada school. (PTI photo)
The measures include deployment of teams from the armed forces and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), depletion of reservoirs to accommodate cyclonic rainwater, positioning of boats, swimmers and relief camps and standby systems to restore power and telecom services, the statement said.

Sources told the publication that the show will air in a primetime slot, but it doesn't yet have a premiere date, nor is it clear how frequently the regular series will broadcast.
Since departing the 'Tonight Show', Jay has toured the US with his stand-up comedy show, hosted an awards show in Jerusalem and also seen his web series 'Jay's Garage' air on NBC.com, while CNBC aired a special, 'Jay's Garage: The Ultimate Car Week' recently.
The veteran broadcaster was reportedly courted by a number of other stations, including CNN, A&E, History and the Tribune but wanted to stay loyal to NBCUniversal.
CNBC - which, like NBC, is owned by NBCUniversal - is mainly known for financial news but has been trying to broaden its viewership with new additions to its programming such as financial game show 'Shark Tank' and reality programmes 'The Profit' and 'Restaurant Startup'.
NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt had previously expressed his desire to have Jay remain with the network after he departed his long-running late night show, which is now fronted by Jimmy Fallon.
He said: "Nothing would make us happier than for him, a la Bob Hope, to still be a presence on the network."

Coming across a little pocket of literary joy in the Broadmoor-Broadway Village Neighborhood is a bit like discovering a special hiding place or a secret clubhouse.
But the Little Free Library in the timeless Tucson neighborhood is no secret. Its one of more than 15,000 tiny libraries and one of about a dozen in Tucson that are part of the worldwide Little Free Library movement, created by lovers of books and builders of community.
In Tucson, neighborhoods are creating their own little public libraries places where neighbors can gather, drop off a book and take one home. The motto is take a book, return a book.
The movement started in 2009, when Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, built a model of a one-room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former teacher who loved reading. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard, with a sign that read Free Books. Neighbors and friends loved it, and he built several more and gave them away.
Today, the number of registered Little Free Libraries across the world grows daily, overloading the map at the nonprofits website, littlefreelibrary.org
Among the newest additions is the Broadmoor-Broadway Village Little Free Library, which was planted in a neighborhood pocket park Sept. 21, said Joan Thomas, who spearheaded the project with neighbors and her daughter, Debbie Weingarten, who maintains the library as steward. The neighborhood is southwest of Broadway and Country Club Road
This all started a year ago, Thomas said. I was walking with a neighbor and we got on the subject of this box with books and what a fantastic idea it was for a neighborhood.
After months of research and conversations, she got in touch with Meg Johnson, who helped start a Little Free Library in Tucsons Garden District Neighborhood a couple of years ago.
With tons of information and motivation, Broadmoor neighbors first looked in thrift shops for a cabinet they could repurpose. The perfect cabinet appeared as neighbors launched a remodeling project and donated a kitchen cabinet to the effort.
Tapping into the talents of neighbors, the project took on a life of its own. Neighbor Ryan Brown, a woodworker, took a plain kitchen cabinet and created a weatherproof Little Free Library, adding an attic space, Thomas said.
