Those who frequent downtown Winslow may have noticed a few less signs in the window of Bainbridge Floor Covering & Supply Inc., traditionally a site of so many entertainment and charitable events posters, as of late. Instead, in their place is a large banner proclaiming that the store is closing and that Steve Shawley and Judy Dulay are retiring.
Though several works in progress will continue to completion, with smaller-scale new jobs still being done, Shawley said that he expects to be completely finished and closed before the end of the year. The business, meanwhile, will operate out of a smaller warehouse location.
Shawley, who moved to the island from Seattle in 1951 with his parents when he was only 8, took over the downtown staple flooring and carpet installation business from Allan Burns McCoskrie, son of the stores original owner, in 1972.
Dulay, Shawleys friend from their days together at Bainbridge High School, has been the stores long-time accountant and general manager.
Though the business would become his lifes work, Shawley said he did not start out with the intent of owning the place when he first came to work there.
I used to be the bookkeeper here; I was studying to be an accountant, Shawley remembered.
I dont do it any more, Ill tell you that, he laughed. Judy does all that.
As he quickly found himself more interested in the business than the books, Shawley said he set about acquiring the shop he had become so fond of.
I bought it out with a couple of investors, he explained. Then Ive since bought them out, so basically Im the owner. It owns me, I own it. Whats the difference?
It was the process of construction and refinement, Shawley said, that drew him to the work.

Sunny skies and a row of smiles reflected the friendliness and optimistic mood among team executives and civic leaders Saturday as the Cubs celebrated their "1060 Project" groundbreaking ceremony at Wrigley Field.
More than 350 people attended the event on the Wrigley infield, with the backdrop of drilling and other construction noise underway.
That noise was music to the ears of Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts, who admitted he had doubts that this long-awaited four-year project would start.
"The fact is there were a lot of days I was concerned that we would never get to here," Ricketts said after the event attended by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, community leaders and project team officials.
"Absolutely. But ultimately, the mayor stepped up and we worked it out and found a way to make sure we could get this ballpark saved, and today I feel great.''
So, apparently, did everyone involved in the ceremony, which was dotted with humor and concluded with ceremonial digs with shovels.
"I do want to echo what (President of Business Operations) Crane Kenney said," Emanuel said. "I'm so proud this is privately financed."
That drew a round of chuckles that grew to laughter when Emanuel added: "That's probably the only thing I've echoed that Crane has ever said."
Kenney, whom Ricketts praised for his relentless work in pushing the renovation through layers of bureaucracy and threats of litigation, replied, "I can definitely say I will enjoy not being on the receiving end of some of the mayor's pointed comments."
Emanuel touted the benefits of the $575 million project (that includes a hotel), which is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs and generate $1.2 billion in new net revenue over the next 30 years.

County Registrar of Voters John Tuteur walked through the hallways of a former Dey Labs building where the elections office is temporarily located and pointed to a rod extending from the ceiling.
Pull the rod and the result is an emergency body wash, Tuteur said.
Parts of the sprawling, former Dey Labs campus at 2751 Napa Valley Corporate Drive still look like places designed for doing pharmaceutical research. Thats true even though Napa County is using the location as temporary quarters for 150 of the more than 300 employees who had downtown offices damaged by the Aug. 24 earthquake.
Napa County bought the former Dey Labs campus in 2013 for $25 million to become the home for its Health and Human Services Agency after remodeling the buildings. Now the campus has become a home-away-from-home for county employees awaiting earthquake repairs.
The Registrar of Voters office is storing ballots in a lab room that has an eyewash station. The adjacent hallways have insect zappers. One room is unusually cold, apparently a useful climate for some of the Dey Labs activities.
This was a manufacturing room, I think, Tuteur said Tuesday as he stood in a space that will be used to sort ballots on Election Night.
In a nearby warehouse bay where forklifts once worked, the county has 360 boxes full of building records for the county Assessor Division.
Plenty of space, Tuteur said.
In another former Dey Labs building, the supervisors on Tuesday held their first meeting in a makeshift Board of Supervisors chamber. Its a no-frills setup in what was a Dey Labs training room, with supervisors sitting behind tables draped with black cloth. Wires for the sound system are taped to the carpet near the tables.
But the temporary chamber is fancier than what remains of the earthquake-scarred permanent chamber on the third floor of the County Administration Building in downtown. Plastic ceiling tiles are missing. Broken water pipes for the heating-and-cooling system caused water damaged.
The rest is here:

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Construction companies and contractors are gathering in Springfield this weekend to convince people to gut kitchens and bathrooms.
The Homebuilders Association of Greater Springfield is putting on its remodeling expo. The association told KOLR10 Friday there is more interest in the show this year than in the past.
Although the construction industry has not climbed back to where it was in the past, it's adding jobs again because people are more confident they can invest in new projects.
When times get lean like they did during the recession, homeowners in the Ozarks have to trim the fat.
Scott Bracy of Steward Construction is someone customers can call when they want a kitchen or bathroom makeover. Bracy said during the recession, remodeling was popular because people were staying in their homes. However, the scope of the projects was limited.
"During the recession there were lots of small remodels where now we're seeing lots of larger projects, just more money being spent by the consumer," Bracy said.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, sales at building and garden supply stores increased by nearly 7 percent from August 2013 to August 2014.
Charylce Ruth, the president of the homebuilders association, says these kinds of signs have brought businesses back out to shows.
Back in the heyday of course we were sold out and then everything got a little tighter and unfortunately some people went out of business, Ruth said. We're seeing people come back in the industry. Theyre more excited to be at a trade show. They have those advertising dollars."
Bracy said this year in particular has been a good one, helping him put more people to work.
