Pest control company takes extreme measures to rid house of brown recluse infestation

    - October 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Saturday, October 11, 2014 - 10:07am

Weldon Spring, MO (KMOV) A home in an upscale Weldon Spring neighborhood that has been overrun by brown recluse spiders is finally getting rid of the eight legged creatures.

Crews have covered the house, which is located near Whitmoor Country Club, with a giant tent and pumped in poison gas to kill the spiders.

A family bought the home in 2008 and later found out it was infested with what a spider expert estimated to be 5,000 brown recluse spiders.

The family sued the previous owners, saying they were not informed of the spider problem. The house eventually went into foreclosure. An expert on brown recluse spiders said the creature's bite can be very serious depending on how much venom is injected.

"It's not going to kill you, but it will make you wish you were dead," said Jamal Sandidge with the University of Kansas.

An exterminator said there is particular reason why one home may be infested even though nearby homes have no such problems.

"Many times people bring them in, you can move from a house that has them. You buy things at an auction, you have furniture in storage, many times brown recluse spiders are carried right into the house," said Tim McCarthy with McCarthy Pest and Termite Control.

The family that sued the previous owners accumulated more than $100,000 in legal fees. McCarthy said it will cost around $14,000 to get rid of the spiders.

Cooler weather ushers in fall pests

    - October 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(RNN) Fall is here and summer pests are retreating, but that doesn't mean you can slack off on pest control. When the weather cools down, some insects and rodents start looking for a warm place to stay. If you're not careful, these pests could choose your cozy home as their winter habitat.

There are ways of staving off their encroachment, however. Charlie Jones is a 14-year veteran in the pest control industry and is currently the Senior Vice President of Operations at Arrow Exterminators. He says that in the fall rodents in particular are looking for a warm place to stay, and they can shimmy into some very tight spaces, even a nickel-sized hole.

"If the head will go, the body will follow," Jones said.

Rats, mice, and squirrels often end up in attics during the fall and winter months. That's because attics provide lots of room to roam around, soft insulation to sleep on and plenty of things they can chew. Rodents must chew on things in order to keep their ever-growing teeth from getting too long.

And that's the problem. All that chewing can cause house fires. Jones explains that one way rodents cause house fires is by chewing through a wire, which causes electricity to arc between the two pieces of wire and sparks a fire.

Rodents also bring other problems into your home. They can make you and your family sick. Pests like fleas, ticks, and lice often piggy back on rodents and, as indirect vectors, help spread diseases from rodents to humans.

Mice and rats also carry several diseases that can be spread to humans directly through their feces, urine, and saliva. You don't necessarily have to come into contact with the animals to get sick.

If you have a central air and heating unit in the attic, Jones says that can spread particulates like rodent dander and feces throughout your house via the air ducts. Those particulates can make you and your family sick.

While they are not rodents, raccoons and opossums sometimes make themselves at home in your attic, basement or even in your walls, and are most certainly pests.

Raccoons are worrisome because they are known to carry rabies along with other diseases. Once a raccoon gets into your home, she won't leave because she has a litter of cubs with her. Raccoons are creatures of habit, so a mother raccoon will return time and again to the same attic to raise her babies as long as she is able to gain entry.

Westfield firm uses science in global bug battle

    - October 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - In the simplest terms, Dave Mueller is a bug guy.

He studied entomology and environmental science at Purdue, then moved to central Indiana to launch two companies: commercial pest-control provider Fumigation Service & Supply and the firm he hopes will put it out of business someday, pheromone maker Insects Limited Inc.

Rather than using pesticides to treat infestations, Insects Limited does battle in its Westfield laboratory, developing synthetic versions of the chemicals bugs emit to attract one another.

Its pheromone lures and traps target the creepy crawlers that can threaten stored food, tobacco, timber and fiber worldwide - everything from food-processing plants to pharmaceutical warehouses to museums artifact collections.

More than three decades after its founding, the 10-person company has a global reach. Half of Insects Limiteds 50 largest customers are outside the United States, Mueller told the Indianapolis Business Journal (http://bit.ly/1savSkV ).

Fumigation Service, meanwhile, has six locations and a full-time staff of about 40 that delivers more traditional treatment to commercial clients throughout the Midwest. It occupies a separate Westfield facility where wood products from the region are fumigated before they can be shipped overseas; an on-site U.S. Department of Agriculture office provides required inspections.

Small and midsize firms dominate the nearly $12 billion U.S. pest-control industry, accounting for more than 70 percent of revenue, according to a June report from research firm IBISWorld Inc. Sales have increased about 2.5 percent in the past five years, the report said, and the trend is expected to continue.

Mueller declined to share his family-owned firms financial results, but he said the businesses are debt-free and have increased revenue every year since 1981.

He credits a business strategy divined from an unlikely source: his daily adversary.

Theres a lot we can learn from the insect world, said Mueller, 61.

Jailed, the getaway driver for gang of house raiders

    - October 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The getaway driver for a gang of burglars has been jailed after he admitted being involved in raids on homes across Worcestershire netting a total of 100,000.

The gang targeted empty properties during the day and broke in through back windows and doors, Worcester Crown Court heard. Many of the homes were ransacked as the burglars carried out searches for jewellery and other valuables.

In one raid, they stole jewellery worth more than 45,000 and in others, they took a number of items of sentimental value including a young mum's engagement and wedding rings and a grandmother's locket containing family pictures, the court heard. Few of the items have been recovered. One woman victim said she felt "violated" after discovering clothes strewn all around her bedroom as they hunted for valuables and some said in impact statements they were considering moving home.

Wyngrave Allen, of Hadley Court, Edgbaston, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to rob and was jailed for three years and nine months.

Nazreen Sultan, prosecuting, said he had been involved in 14 burglaries and one attempted burglary on various dates in November and December last year. On one day, the gang had driven to carry out raids on four homes in the Worcester area.

They made sure the property was empty to avoid confrontation and to give them more time and the victims only discovered they had been burgled when they returned from work or, on one occasion, from a two-week holiday. The raiders gained entry by breaking windows in back doors or conservatories or by forcing patio doors.

Targets included homes in Dilmore Lane, Lansdowne Crescent, Winchester Avenue, Bicton Avenue and Bevere Close in Worcester. On the last of these, they were disturbed when neighbours spotted two men acting suspiciously.

They also struck at homes in Upton Road, Powick and Leigh Grove in Droitwich, two cottages in Ombersley and one in Hindlip and houses in Elm Road, Evesham and Defford Road in Pershore. A raid on a home in Mason Ryde, Pershore, netted more than 45,000 worth of jewellery, almost half the total haul. They also struck at two homes in Stratford upon Avon.

The value of items taken ranged from several hundred to several thousand pounds, mainly made up of jewellery and electrical items including computer consoles, TVs and games, Miss Sultan told the court.

Allen was caught when he took some of the stolen computer games to sell at a store in Birmingham and his Ford Fiesta was spotted on number plate recognition systems around the areas of the burglaries.

The Bristol Post commented First there was BUP stop – now there's the Bristol bus stop that…

The bus stop on Crow Lane, Henbury Picture: Michael Lloyd BRML20141009C-003_C

FIRST city council contractors managed to misspell the word 'bus' when painting road markings in Old Market, now they have painted a bus stop in Henbury the size of a car parking space.

The busy bus stop, opposite Henbury Library in Crow Lane, has been recently repainted to make it so small that only half a bus can fit into the space.

The lay-by originally designated for the bus stop, could comfortably accommodate a bus as it pulls in to let passengers on and off.

But it has now been cut in half, making it impossible for a bus to fit into the designated area.

And not only have the workman miscalculated the length of buses in Bristol, but also the width, as when buses pull out from the Henbury stop, the new bus lane markings running along the road are no wider than a standard cycle lane.

This is not the first time there has been a problem with bus stop markings in the city. In August, blundering workmen managed to misspell the word 'bus' while undertaking road works in Old Market.

"Bup stop" was painted onto the road surface in large yellow lettering, with the stencilled letter P used instead of S.

Chris Evans, from Henbury, was the first to spot the mix up in Crow Lane and sent his pictures into the Bristol Post.

He said: "Following the recent "Bup Stop" farce, Bristol City Council and its contractors or associates seem intent on producing yet another bus stop howler outside of Henbury Public Library in Crow Lane.
