Dow sheds 335 points in biggest drop of 2014

    - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

The Dow plunged 335 points on Thursday, its worst day of the entire year on a point basis.

October is shaping up to be a scary month for anyone with money in the market, but for now investors are just trying to catch their breath. Already this month, there have been five days with major market moves where the Dow has swung up or down more than 200 points. Wednesday -- mere hours ago -- was actually the best day of the year so far for stocks.

What's behind all of this volatility? Market moves aren't always logical, but it's clear that investors are growing increasingly nervous about the fate of the European and Chinese economies. And they don't know how that will change the Federal Reserve's plans to remove the easy-money punchbowl.

The violent swings in the market confused professionals and retail investors alike.

"Everyone who thought they were in the clear yesterday walked in today and got punched in the face," said Michael Block, chief strategist at Rhino Trading Partners. "Just when you think have it figured out, you don't. This is a very tough market."

Jitters about Europe's slumping economy were amplified by new numbers revealing German exports shrank dramatically in August. Investors are now losing sleep over the threat that Germany -- Europe's economic engine -- could slip into a recession.

CNNMoney's Fear & Greed Index is now flashing "extreme fear," compared with just run-of-the-mill "fear" a month ago. The wild market moves are also reflected in the VIX volatility index, which spiked 21% on Thursday.

"The only thing I'm currently bullish on is volatility," said Stocktwits user shogunofharlem78 wrote.

Apollo Theater sheds light on Harlem's South African roots

    - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Harlem's roots run as wide as they are deep.

The Apollo Theater is producing a four-day festival this weekend to highlight the neighborhoods longstanding affinity with the motherland.

The event, which kicked off Thursday, will run in conjunction with a citywide celebration of the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandelas historic inauguration as South Africas first black president.

The legendary freedom fighter, who died last year at the age of 95, likened Harlems bond to South Africa to ...an umbilical cord that ties us together, and praised the neighborhoods legacy of battling for civil rights behind the likes of Sojourner Truth, Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X.

Mandela, who led the fight against apartheid and then encouraged reconciliation as his countrys president, made a special visit to Harlem in 1990 shortly after his release from the South African prison in which he spent 27 years.

In his fight against apartheid, Mandela drew on Americas civil rights movement and the Pan-African movement led by Garvey, who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Harlem in the 1920s.

For South Africans, this black world in Harlem gave them hope that there was a road and possibility for them as well, said Harlem historian John Reddick, who will participate in a panel that wraps up the festival on Sunday.

The Uptown Hall will include former Mayor David Dinkins, actor and activist Harry Belafonte, Black Star News publisher Milton Allimadi, National Black Theatre CEO Sade Lythcott, South African Consul General George Monyemangene and Voza Rivers, whose New Heritage Theatre produced a groundbreaking series of plays in the 1980s including Woza Albert!, Asinamli! and Sarafina! that educated Harlemites about the apartheid struggle.

These shows were able to raise the consciousness of what was happening in South Africa, recalled Rivers. It motivated us to want to do more, be active or write checks to assist the movement.

NSE index sheds 1.03% as equities slide worsens

    - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The equities segment of the Nigerian Stock Exchange witnessed a weak bargain on Thursday as equities declined for the fourth straight session.

The NSE All Share Index fell by 422.77 basis points or 1.03 per cent to close at 40,572.25 basis points, its biggest loss in over a week. The index had declined by 0.26 per cent or 108.92 basis points from 41,103.94 basis points to close at 40,995.02 basis points on Wednesday.

In the same vein, the market capitalisation of the listed equities fell by N139bn or 1.03 per cent to close at N13.397tn impacted majorly by losses recorded by Dangote Cement Plc.

The cement producer, which is the most capitalised company on the Exchange, shed 2.12 per cent or N4.65 to close at N215.15 per share.

With the exception of the NSE Consumer Goods Index which rose by 0.3 per cent to close at 1,019.45 basis points and the NSE Alternative Securities Market Index that close flat at 951.09 basis points, all other indicators declined on Thursday.

The result of todays trading is quite appalling; the market losing over one per cent is quite worrisome, the Chief Executive Officer Enterprise Stockbrokers, Mr. Rotimi Fakayejo, said.

The major decliner is Dangote Cement, which lost about N4.65. That translates to about N79bn drop in the market capitalisation.

According to him, although there is currently a lot of apprehension in the market, the position of the market at the end of Thursdays trading had a lot to do with Dangote Cement.

He, however, expressed optimism that the release of the third quarter, 2014 results would help change the market trend.

Investors exchanged 698.841 million shares valued at N6.069bn in 4,833 deals with 18 stocks rising and 35 equities declining.

    - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NORTHWOOD | Construction crews are making progress on an addition to the Northwood Public Library.

The approximately 2,200-square-foot addition will be used for a public meeting room. Benefactors Gregg Olson and his wife, Sandy Olson, are paying for construction.

The exterior is up and enclosed. Crews are working on the sidewalk leading to the building and the addition's brick exterior.

When completed, the addition will have a separate entrance and also be accessible through the library, 906 First Ave. S.

Officials are hopeful the project will be completed by the end of the year, said Library Director Connie Kenison. Construction began in early June.

The space also will contain a kitchenette and restroom. It will be handicapped-accessible.

Reservations will be made through Northwoods city offices.

Miami WorldCenter to begin construction soon

    - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MIAMI -

While standing about a block away from the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. federal courthouse in Miami, Jose Rios said "having no money" made him feel "invisible."

Rios was setting up a sleeping area early Friday morning on a sidewalk next to an empty parking lot. He said he had been living near Miami's Overtown neighborhood for the last year, because he was running away from "step dad sex abuse and no one gave a f---."

A few blocks away, there was a line in front of Club Space, a nightclub that remains open 24 hours. Another Jose, also known as Joe Ramirez, was also running away. He was there for "EDM acoustics" and was "already drunk and ready for $7 water" bottles.

"We're space cadets. That side has [the] Terremark conspiracy. You have strip club pervs, Grand Central hipsters [and] bay yuppies," Ramirez's friend Tatiana Alvarez, 22, said. "One day, cops will send homeless crack heads running. Dollar bills gonna come. It'll be like newspaper bomb turn[ed] into rich opera [expletive] glass."

That was Alvarez's description of Miami's Park West neighborhood, an area west of Biscayne Bay, north of downtown Miami and east of Overtown, formerly known as Colored Town.Developers have been talking about a Miami Worldcenter vision in the area for about a decade. This year, Miami commissioners have been giving the 28-acre mixed-use $1.5 billion project the green light.

What the city wants in the area is "substantially similar, if not identical, to that of plans that have been approved for Brickell City Center, River Landing and the Design District," Nitin Motwani, Miami Worldcenter developer, said in a statement.

Developers want to start construction this year. The project -- a partnership between Boca Raton based The Falcone Group and Marc Roberts Companies -- faced bitter litigation against commercial broker Edie Laquer who wanted to be a partner in the project. They also faced opposition on their management of public streets.

According to the Miami Worldcenter plan Northeast 7th and 9th Street would be closed to traffic. Seventh from North Miami Avenue to Northeast 2nd Avenue would become a pedestrian-only promenade, and 9th Street would turn into retail space. Northeast 8th Street would be open for traffic.

"Miami Worldcenter has earned the support of the Miami Entertainment District Association as well as the owners of Mekka, Will Call, E11even and others," Motwani said.

Residential firms turn to mall, other projects to boost sales

    - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Amid an intensely competitive property market, leading developers have had to create a new business model in order to boost demand for their residential projects by building community malls and other facilities close to their projects.

This new type of approach has been adopted by companies aiming to sell out their residential projects and meet their targets, according to property experts.

For example, Sansiri has introduced a community retail project, Habito, at Sukhumvit 77, located close to several of its residential projects worth Bt8.7 billion in total.

The nearby projects are Blocs Sukhumvit 77, The Base Sukhumvit 77, The Base Park East Sukhumvit 77, The Base Park West Sukhumvit 77, Garden Square Sukhumvit 77 - an upscale townhouse development with prices starting at Bt10 million - and its latest condominium project, Hasu Haus.

These projects comprise more than 1,000 units in Sansiri's portfolio.

We Retail, the retail arm of Property Perfect, is investing Bt20 billion to develop four new community malls from last year through to the end of 2015. They are also located close to the developer's residential projects.

Two of the mall projects, worth Bt1.5 billion, commenced construction last year, with operations scheduled to begin in the final quarter of this year. They are Metro West Town, located at Kalapapruk, and Metro East Town, located at Sukhumvit 77-Lat Krabang.

One of the other projects will be situated on Ram-Indra, with retail space of 150,000 square metres and an investment cost of Bt6 billion, and the fourth on Ratchadaphisek, with retail space of 300,000 square metres at a cost of Bt12 billion.

Construction of these two projects is scheduled to commence next year.

Besides its community-mall development programme, Property Perfect has also sold land on Bang Na-Trat road to The Mall group for the development of a shopping mall, which will be located close to its Sky Sukhumvit condominium project.

Andy's Restaurant Scorecard: Havana's Pilon, plus scores

    - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - It was down to Boston versus Memphis.

Marialys Gonzalez and Pedro Pena ran their Cuban restaurant for two decades in Puerto Rico until they decided it was time to move it to the mainland.

"We had friends in both cities, but it was the weather that brought us to Memphis (in May 2013)," Pena said.

A year and a half later, their restaurant, Havana's Pilon Authentic Cuban Cuisine, 143 Madison Ave., is our High Score of the Week with a near-perfect 99 on its Sept. 26 health inspection.

"She's very jealous with the kitchen," Pena said. "She only allows me to wash dishes, French fries ... she only allows me to do that!"

"It's called 'shredded clothes.' That's what it translates to," said customer Ian Read of Byhalia, MS. The Ropa Vieja is shredded beef with olives, carrots, brown rice and black beans -- with a flavorful Cuban marinade. "They have a marinade called 'mojo,' and it's garlic and olive oil ... it really adds flavor to it."

Add a side of yucca (think sweet and smooth potato with onions and garlic) and the strongest, tastiest coffee this side of Havana, and you have a Cuban's favorite Memphis Cuban restaurant.

WHAT ANDY LIKES: Cuban Cafe (coffee), Ropa Vieja, Cuban Sandwich, Fried Marinated Red Snapper, Guava & Cheese Empanada

    OTHER SCORES OF THE WEEK:

    T.G.'s, 3870 Macon Rd., Gaisman Park/East Memphis, 98 on Oct. 1
