ATTRACTING CRITICS: The "disappointing" Spark Park on Hereford St.
A new central-city park built by telecom company Spark has been called unappealing and harsh by one of New Zealand's leading landscape architects.
The Spark Park was built on the site of the company's former Telecom exchange building in Hereford St. The building was demolished after the February 2011 earthquake.
The small park features some grass planters, four lamp-posts, free wi-fi and the royal crest that used to adorn the original building. At the back of the park is a new piece of street art by Christchurch artist Wongi.
Do you live near an ugly park? Tell us about it at reporters@press.co.nz.
However, Christchurch landscape architect Di Lucas said the park looked unappealing.
"The rest of it looks unfinished, like the spark is yet to arrive. It looks like it is more for vehicles than for people," she said.
"It is very hard and harsh and an unusual colour. It is not friendly. It is disappointing and it looks unfinished."
Christchurch writer and designer Barnaby Bennett was also critical of the space.

Andrew Lefevre was an artist and interior designer whose curtains, bedspreads, tablecloths and drapes were valued by clients across Western Pennsylvania.
He was very artistic and talented and sensitive, said his business partner, Francis Simko Jr. of Swissvale.
Andrew Lefevre of Swissvale died of kidney failure Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014. He was 79.
Mr. Lefevre was born in Adamsburg and graduated from Jeannette High School in 1954.
In 1976, he and Simko Jr. opened Originality Plus in Youngwood, a consignment shop that sold the work of local artists.
When the shop was moved from Youngwood to Swissvale, Mr. Lefevre started to receive many requests to design and make custom bedspreads, curtains and other textiles.
He learned his trade as a young man by installing draperies for JCPenney and by working with interior designers, Simko said.
By the mid-1980s, his design work took up all of his time.
It got so busy that we actually closed the gift shop, Simko said.
When he was at his busiest, Mr. Lefevre had eight to 10 employees, according to Simko.

VILONIA, AR -- It's a big step for neighborhood hit hard by the April 27th tornado that devastated parts of central Arkansas. The first rebuilt home is currently under construction in the Parkwood Meadows subdivision of Vilonia.
Crews were busy Thursday putting in electrical wiring and working on the roof. A developer bought up 25 lots. He plans to build homes and put them on the market. For one of the guys working on the build its an extra special job. He's an electrician and also a volunteer firefighter -- one of the first to respond after the tornado.
"This is my home town and just to see the destruction , the life lost, it still gets to you a little bit," said Clay Heslep. "To be rebuilding the first house, it's just a testament to what this community is all about.
The developer says all the homes will be build with anchor bolts to better secure the walls to the foundation. Each will also have a safe room.
The builder says the plan from here out is to do two homes at a time. He hopes to have the first home on the market within the next three weeks.
