PITTSBURGH (KDKA) Do you find yourself fighting for outlet space as your familys collection of electrical gadgets grows? If youre tired of juggling three or four different chargers on a two-socket outlet, theres a new and simple solution.
Angies List has some tips for making the switch to USB outlets.
If your home seems to be running out of outlet space, maybe its time to give your outlets a reboot.
USB outlets are a new trend and they have been available for about a year now. Electricians expect that they will continue to become more popular, Angie Hicks from Angies List said.
By adding one or two USB ports right alongside the standard plugs in your electrical outlet, you can plug your devices straight into the wall and eliminate the need for bulky USB adapters that typically hog valuable outlet space.
As peoples countertops get [busier], their islands in their house get [busier], its a convenient spot. Beside your bed because you got two outlets there. One of them is usually a switch plug, which is half hot, so you need a place to plug in your USB or your phone to charge it while your alarm clock and all thats still working, general contractor Greg Wells said.
While this may seem like a swap you could do yourself, Wells has a word of warning for homeowners.
There are a lot of do-it-yourselfers out there these days that normally end up calling us to come fix it. But, I always say stick with what you know and call somebody that knows what they know, so you dont lose your phone, wire it up wrong, lose your phone, your laptop, what have you, Wells said.

WILKES-BARRE For Noel George Miller, the demolition of a neighboring building is a little too close to home literally.
Crews from Brdaric Excavating Inc., of Luzerne, were tearing down a building at 31-35 North Welles Street. City spokeswoman Liza Prokop said the property suffered fire damage on two occasions most recently, she said a three-alarm fire damaged the building on Nov. 20 of last year.
The city had a professional engineer look at the property, and determined that the property was structurally unsound and demolition was the best option, she said.
Along with the damages, Prokop said that the building had been vacant and broken into more than a dozen times, and members of the public complained about its condition.
Miller, 71, stood outside and watched as heavy equipment tore down the building. He said it already began to collapse before the demolition, which sent bricks and other material into his yard.
The demolition, however, resulted in even more bricks coming into his yard and destroying a storage shed on his property. Crews had what appeared to be a large tarp between the two properties, but the tarp only covered a portion of the demolition site Millers house and backyard remained exposed.
He wasnt too worried about the minor structure, but was more worried about another storage building in his backyard and his house itself.
I asked them to stop and they refused, Miller said. What am I supposed to do?
Mere feet separated the crumbling building from Millers house. Along with the damaged shed, Millers gutter nearest the building being demolished was seemingly damaged.
Miller called police, who encouraged him to take pictures of his property before and after the demolition. Miller said he contacted the building code officer, who told him that the demolition was advertised in the newspaper.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. Demolition of the K-31 Building at Oak Ridges East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) began today, marking the removal of the fourth of five gaseous diffusion buildings at the former uranium enrichment site.
The two-story building covers 750,000 square feet and spans a 17-acre footprint. The K-31 facility began operations in 1951, and it was used to enrich uranium for defense and commercial purposes until it was shut down in 1985. In 2005, EM removed most of the hazardous materials from the buildings interior.
This project is possible because of the project managers and crews that completed the K-25 Demolition Project under budget and ahead of schedule, said Sue Cange, acting manager of the Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (EM). DOE and UCOR have established a model partnership that is allowing us to maintain momentum, complete additional cleanup work, and retain skilled workers.
URS | CH2M Oak Ridge LLC (UCOR), EMs cleanup contractor for the Oak Ridge Reservation, is responsible for demolishing the facility. The company prepared it for demolition this past summer by conducting asbestos abatement, removing the facilitys exterior transite paneling, disconnecting the buildings power sources, and completing pollution prevention efforts, such as filling interior and exterior storm drains.
EM and UCOR worked together to accelerate K-31s demolition five months ahead of its original proposed baseline schedule. The early start was achieved through EMs oversight and the hard work and safety focus of UCORs skilled workforce, supporting subcontractors, and labor partners.
Demolishing K-31 will bring us another step closer to our Vision 2016 initiative removal of all gaseous diffusion facilities from ETTP by 2016, said Ken Rueter, UCOR president and project manager. Achieving this vision will mark the first-ever complete cleanup of a gaseous diffusion plant and facilities. Removal of K-31, and afterward K-27, will eliminate a nuclear hazard and open up more ETTP property for reindustrialization and regional economic development.
Once the K-31 demolition is completed next year, the 383,000-square-foot K-27 Building will be the only remaining gaseous diffusion building at ETTP. It is scheduled for demolition in 2015.
Under DOEs reindustrialization program, property at ETTP is being transferred to the private sector as the agency works to make the site a private sector industrial park. Cleanup at the site is paving the way to achieve DOEs goal and creating a safer environment.

TEMPLE -
A viewer posted a question on our News Channel 25 Facebook's page regarding the demolition timeline for a vacant property that had four fires in two months in Temple.
The viewer questioned why the city did not demolish the home on 1313 N. 2nd St. after it determined the house was inhabitable on Aug. 4.
According to the City of Temple, the city has no plans to take possession of the property.
The city has the understanding the owner already made the decision to demolish the property. On November 3, the Building and Standards Commission will set a deadline for that to happen, which could be between 30 and 90 days.
If the owner misses the Commission's deadline, the city will demolish it and bill the owner for the cost.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The four fires that occurred at a home at 1313 N. 2nd St. are still under investigation. However, Temple Fire and Rescue suspect at least one of them was intentional.
Owner Loralyn Seay had not lived at that home for two years, but she planned to repair it and sell it.
She now plans to demolish the $70,000 house and sell the lot. Seay said she is sad to lose this house because she lived here for 40 years.
