Now that this whole Internet of Things zeitgeist has really stated to take hold, simple DIY security systems are becoming increasingly common. Dozens of different companies have developed their own take on the idea, and while normally the announcement of yet another entrant into thiscategory wouldnt be particularly noteworthy, this new one from San Diego-based startup Pilot Labs has managed to catch our attention.
Its called CoinGuard, and while the tech inside of the system isnt all that groundbreaking, the design of it definitely is. Despite being equipped with motion sensors and some advanced networking tech, each CoinGuard module is no bigger than a half dollar coin.
This tiny size means that you can place CoinGuard practically anywhere, on anything that you want to monitor be it your windows, keys, jewelry, front door, refrigerator door, medicine cabinet, or even your cookie jar. Whenever the embedded accelerometer senses movement, the module beams an alert to the accompanying network hub, which then serves you a notification on your mobile device no matter where you are in the world. And because the system runs on ZigBee, you also dont need to worry about range the modules work together to create a mesh network and relay signals across long distances.

This isnt the first motion-based security system weve ever come across (check out Notion), but its definitely the smallest, which ultimately gives it a broader range of potential uses. Since CoinGuard can fit just about anywhere, its not limited to the same locations that bigger, more sophisticated monitoring devices are.
Obviously, this system has some big limitations compared to full-fledged security systems outfitted with cameras, but not everybody wants such robust security, and for those simply looking for an easy and affordable way to make their home safer, CoinGuard would likely be an excellent option. If you back the Pilot Labs Kickstarter project, you can pre-order yourself a set of three (plus network hub) for around $80 bucks. The project is still a long way from achieving its 100K funding goal, but its still got about a month left in the campaign, and if all goes well the company expects to ship the first units to backers as early as December 2014.

Link-Union
Link-Union's founder, Andy Benatti, travels a lot. He tried out a variety of webcams to stay connected to his family while on the road, but felt that they all came up short in one way or another. So, he created his own version: the Link-U Hybrid SmartCam.
Most DIY home security cameras offer either local or remote storage. Samsung's $190, 160 SmartCam HD Pro (SD card local storage; not yet available in Australia, but converts to about AU$215) and Dropcam's $200, 190 Dropcam Pro (cloud server remote storage; not yet available in Australia, but converts to about AU$230) are two such examples. The Link-U comes with both -- an SD card slot (up to 32GB) and cloud access via Google or iCloud Drive.
The Link-U has another intriguing feature: Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, thanks to an internal 3G/4G modem. This hybrid camera also has two power sources, a standard plug adapter and an 8-hour backup battery. That means that your camera should still function and the feed should still be accessible on the Android or iOS app even if your Wi-Fi cuts out and you lose power.
It also has Bluetooth LE. So, you should be able to connect a variety of smart home gadgets, although there aren't any specifics on third-party integrations just yet. This list of features sure seems astounding, especially when you consider that none of the models we've reviewed offer quite as many contingencies in case of spotty Wi-Fi/power outages/both.
The Link-U Hybrid SmartCam recently launched on Indiegogo and early backers can snag one for just $100, which converts to about 60 or AU$113 (the camera is expected to retail for $250 eventually, which converts to 155 or AU$285). The very first batch of production-ready models should ship in January 2015. Find out more on Link-Union's Indiegogo page.

On two occasions, it has taken months for the same sidewalk on Main Street to be fixed.
Times-Herald photo by Lisa Goudy
Councillors vote on a motion at the Oct. 6, 2014 council meeting at city hall.
As of Mondays council meeting, the portion of the water service line from the curb and gutter to the water main line in front of 132 Main St. N. isnt finished.
There had been a water line break in the winter time. It was left as a pile of rabble and holes well into, I believe it was July, said Coun. Brian Swanson. The enquiry does point out for at least April, May, June, part of July, we had a main street sidewalk that was treacherous.
The enquiry, submitted by Swanson, stated because of the location of the work and how much work was remaining, the property owners requested a temporary installation of paving to be done in the 2014 tourist season.
The repair that did occur at 132 Main St. N. was initiated first of all as a repair on the service line, said Duane Grado, public works manager. Thats between the building and the control valve thats just onto the pavers that are located in front of that building.
He said that happened around June and the business owner didnt want to disrupt customer flow for the summer.
The main contractor couldnt be scheduled in, so we got a local contractor to do a temporary repair, said Grado. Were actually scheduling right now for this week or for next week to do that one and the one in front of Timothy Eatons.
After the service relay is completed, all concrete, pavers and asphalt will be repaired permanently.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- Gates are now unlocked and tape has been taken down in much of northern Arizona's Oak Creek Canyon with the reopening of many areas that were closed nearly three months because of a major wildfire.
That's good news for visitors and businesses alike, the Arizona Daily Sun reported.
The threat of flooding prompted the Forest Service to close its land within the canyon in July, but most developed recreation sites, vehicle pullouts, swimming holes and hiking trails reopened last week.
The heaviest monsoon rains skirted the area during late summer, so there was little flooding.
Operators of businesses serving visitors are pleased to have the canyon reopened.
"It's starting to feel like a normal fall," said Frank Garrison, owner of The Butterfly Garden Inn and a critic of the closure.
Much of the canyon located between Sedona and Flagstaff wasn't scarred by the nearly 33-square-mile Slide Fire, but thousands of acres inside the canyon and above its rims were.
