St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman will be the first to break in the freshly-laid sod on Wednesday morning when he plays catch at the new regional ballpark in Lowertown.
The $64 million, city-owned CHS Field will be home to the independent league St. Paul Saints and Hamline University's Piper Baseball team when it officially opens off 5th and Broadway in May 2015. Contractors affiliated with the Ryan Companies will begin laying sod on the ball field at 8 a.m. The mayor is expected to take the mound around 11 a.m.
The Saints recently ended their 22-year run at Midway Stadium on Energy Park Drive. The 12-acre site will be converted by the St. Paul Port Authority and United Properties into an office and light manufacturing center. The building, which will measure up to 200,000 square feet, could open in 2016.

FIFA officials will be taking a closer look at BC Place today in light of the controversy surrounding turf conditions for the Womens World Cup that will be held in Canada next year.
A total of six stadiums around the country will be inspected.
BC Place will host the World Cup final on July 5 as well as a number of other matches in the group and playoff stages.
At the beginning of this month, a group of elite female players filed a lawsuit against the Canadian Soccer Association and FIFA claiming gender discrimination because their male counterparts have always played on natural grass surfaces.
They say playing on fake grass impacts game dynamics and can result in a greater risk of injury.
The players alsosuggest that tournament venues replace their turf with permanent or temporary grass pitches.
A lawyer representing the players says it would cost $2 million to $3 million at most to install real grass.
So far, FIFA has said it has no plans to reconsider using artificial turf and there is no plan B.
Players say they will not be boycotting the World Cup over this issue.
A number of celebrities weighed in on the debate.

TRADERS are celebrating after the first phase of the new Wickford Market opened for business.
Work on the specially created Market Avenue, which runs alongside the 99p shop, has finished, and the three permanent kiosks were unveiled for the first time on Saturday.
The florist and gift shop, Vickys Cafe and Jac in a Box hairdresser, formerly Graffiti Barbers, are thriving after bagging the sought-after spaces.
Trevor Day, who runs the market, is confident the new location will be a big hit after a difficult, declining few years.
He said: Even though it was raining on Saturday things seem to be going well so far, so were really pleased.
The council has spent some serious money and it shows because the kiosks look fantastic.
The new market is looking very professional, its certainly a big improvement.
Its a shame we couldnt all move en mass, but were just waiting for finishing touches before we can all follow. It should be any day now.
We will have to wait until then to see just howmuch better business is, but Im feeling really positive.
Contractors are finishing repaving the High Street to make way for 17 gazebos, with a further 11 set to go down Market Avenue, alongside the kiosks.

Video will begin in 5 seconds.
Fence jumping at Australian music festivals are a common occurrence but recent examples of organised mass gatecrashing has at least one security firm calling for an overhaul.
It was all for one and one for all when large groups jumped fences at two electronic dance music festivals in the past month.
Groups at the Listen Out festival in Sydney and Perth rushed and jumped perimeter fences to avoid paying, leaving event security guards helpless.
Fence jumping has occurred at Australian festivals for years, and both successful and unsuccessful attempts are now regularly posted online from events such as Future Music Festival, Soundwave and Big Day Out.

In Sydney on September 27, a group was filmed charging the temporary fencing at Centennial Park en masse. The video was later uploaded to social media. The jump left a 29-year-old security guard with a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding after a person landed on him.

Fuzzy Events, the presenter of Listen Out, said mass group fence-jumping is by no means a new trend and that it comes in and out of fashion.
"We assume it is likely at every event ... and we keep our eyes and ears open for groups organising on social media," director of Fuzzy Events John Wall said.
