The Coega Development Corporation is seeing a construction ascend with seven companies busy with constructions well underway within the Coega Development Corporations Industrial Development Zone (CDC.)
Construction taking place at the IDZ provides job opportunities for residents living in the Nelson Mandela Bay, about 1800 people are benefitting from the construction-related jobs.
Construction expansion of existing businesses is sign of current investors business growth and an improving economic climate, said CDC head of marketing and communication, Dr Ayanda Vilakazi.
Companies currently under construction include leading gas suppliers Air Product (R300m investment) and Afrox (R300m;) electricity generator Dedisa Peaking Power Plant (R2.2bn;) while cold chain logistics facilitators Vector Logistics investment is valued at (R140m); Digistics expansion (R30m;) ID Logistics (R30m) and UTi Distribution (R30m.)
The slab for the Afrox office building is presently being casted and it aims to have construction completed during the fourth quarter of this year (2014.) Twelve people will be employed once operational.
More than a third of the work is completed on Dedisa Peaking Power Plant. On completion the plant will consist of two open-cycle gas turbines able to produce 335MW of electricity, which is roughly half of Nelson Mandela Bays power requirement. The establishment of the plant will provide value added assistance to a number of growing industries established in the IDZ, estimated to be over 1,000 permanent employment opportunities to be created as a result of the supply of electricity to those industries.
Air Products is firmly on schedule to commission the plant and have gas flowing to customers in the final quarter of 2014. Nine operational jobs and 42 constructions jobs are being created. Vector Logistics started construction in May this year and have created 120 construction jobs and 90 people employed once operational.
Digistics Digital Logistics has outgrown its current 2,285m facility in Zone 1 of the Coega IDZ a space it has occupied for six years in favour of a larger 4,510m facility. Construction of the new Digistics warehouse facility started at the end of May this year. There are 120 construction workers benefitting from the project and once completed 30 people will benefit from permanent jobs.
ID Logistic will create work for 50 people once operational and during the construction phase 200 people would have benefitted from jobs created.
UTi Distribution currently operates from a 2700m building but will be moving to a 2800m building which is currently under construction thus increasing their capacity with a 100m2. The new site is expected to be completed closer to the end of this year.

A window cleaner is suing one of Britain's biggest ever lottery winners over an alleged unpaid bill of 375.
Steve Rix claims 56million jackpot winner Nigel Page withheld payment because a member of the cleaning team took a picture of one of his sports cars.
Mr Rix, 57, says his staff spent four hours polishing mirrors, wiping down glass staircases, and cleaning swimming pool windows in Page's 5million rural eco-mansion.

But an hour after he left he got a call from the estate manager, Danny Baker, who told him that CCTV footage captured one of the workers photographing a McLaren sports car.
Mr Rix, who earns 13,000 a year, says he apologised and ensured the image was deleted - but claims Page refused to pay due to the 'breach of privacy'.
He said yesterday: 'That money is nothing to him but to me it's half a month's wages.

It was just an hour after Countryside Fire Protection District officials had finished serving pancakes at a safety event Sunday when the department received a 911 call from a home with five family members feeling ill.
According to fire officials, it is the season for carbon monoxide incidents, in which the odorless and tasteless gas can sneak up on residents when they crank up the gas furnace for the first time in months. The gas can also leak into a home if a furnace or gas-fired hot water heater is in need of repairs.
Were getting into that time of year, Fire Marshall Michael McNally said. A lot of people dont realize it is the law.
Sundays call came in at 1 p.m. from a home in the 300 block of Sutcliffe Circle in Vernon Hills. The caller told emergency dispatch that everyone woke up feeling sick.
They exited the building to call 911. They did the right thing rather than remaining in the building to make the call, McNally said.
When the first ambulance arrived, found everyone was safe outside. A second ambulance was called to take the family to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
High levels of the gas were found inside, and the gas company responded to cut off the gas to the homes furnace and hot water heater. They indicated the gas source was in the area of the furnace and hot water heater, McNally said.
Illinois residents and property owners have been required to have carbon monoxide detectors within 15 feet of all rooms used for sleeping since January 2007.
McNally didnt say whether the Vernon Hills family had detectors. He did say they are essential.
You never know when its going to happen and you wont know unless you have a detector, he said, reiterating that carbon monoxide has no odor or taste and cannot be seen.

RANDOLPH TWP. -- Mayor Jim Loveys and Library Director Anita Freeman welcomed the community to the library's newly constructed meeting room with an official ribbon cutting on Saturday.
With twice the amount of square footage as the previous room, the room was well received by visitors.
The library's funds paid for the work, which took seven months to complete, at a cost of $285,778.
The past space was 1,000 square feet and had 74 chairs that packed the room. The new space is twice that. Often, adult programs would be filled with attendees from an assisted living facility who would arrive by bus.
Some had wheelchairs or oxygen tanks.
"We had to start removing chairs to get them in. Some really popular programs would book solid. If you didnt register online you didnt get in and some people were not happy about that," Freeman said.
In order to follow fire code restrictions, the library needed to provide more room for their amount of visitors. The new meeting room now has two times the space with built in storage areas as well.
When the building was renovated back in 1985, every space was filled.
There was previously one closet which then became the technology room with computer equipment.
We could still store stuff but not the way we had hoped for, adds Freeman. With the various renovations weve done in the past six years -everything is improved with how we use the space. My maintenance person now has a closet that is big enough to hold her equipment and she has some storage as well which she didnt have before. Now we have more space for everybody.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Obama administration says its launching a makeover for Nursing Home Compare, the government website consumers can turn to when a loved one needs long-term care.
Officials said Monday a key improvement will involve a new electronic reporting system to gather details on nurse and aide staffing directly from payroll records.
Staff-to-patient ratios are one of the most important predictors of quality, and currently the government relies on data reported by the facilities themselves.
Required by legislation, the payroll reporting system will take at least a year to implement. Meantime, more focused inspections and new quality measures will be incorporated into the nursing home ratings.
Separately, the administration proposed an update to regulations for home health agencies, the first major rules change since 1989. Improved quality is the goal.
