Blizzard look-back: Tree repair continues for local arborist

    - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Arborist Dave Johnson had just one day off of work in the two months following the Oct. 4, 2013 blizzard the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Otherwise, he and his crews at Johnson Tree Co. worked long hours seven days a week, often high up in the trees with a chainsaw doing dangerous aerial tree trimming and removal in wet, slippery conditions.

People have this idea that tree companies sit back and relish these types of natural events, said Johnson. Thats not the case.

He doesnt remember what finally allowed him to feel it was OK to take a breather, but he does remember the extreme fatigue that plagued him and his crews during those months.

He also remembers the emotional devastation that could have easily become commonplace.

I have never seen so many people with tears in their eyes as I saw last autumn. People really do develop a relationship with their trees, especially memorial trees. People who arent in the industry dont understand the attachment, he said.

Now, one year later, Johnson Tree Co. still has a list of about 100 people who need storm clean-up done.

After 35 years in the tree business, Johnson is sure that the blizzard that caused so much tree destruction and heartache was a rare event.

I dont believe for a second, in my lifetime, that I will ever see it again, said Johnson. It was the perfect tree storm.

Corporate law specialist has thumb in many pies

    - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    LAWRENCE SMITH/Fairfax NZ

A STAYER: Chapman Tripp chairman Roger Wallis stayed in Auckland when many of his legal peers left, quickly building a reputation for his expertise in company law.

Companies law expert Roger Wallis has helped most of the businesses now listing on the NZX, writes Tim Hunter.

The stony grey floor tiles in law firm Chapman Tripp's sleek Auckland lobby, described by its designer as a "mixture of brutal and delicate textures", are etched with words of inspiration.

"Vigour", says one. "Energy", says another. Nearby a tile reads "Insight".

Standing upon them most days are the proprietorial feet of the firm's chairman Roger Wallis, a specialist in corporate and securities law who has had a hand in seven of the last 10 company floats to hit the NZX.

He has also acted as legal adviser to Hanover Finance, a role with somewhat less cachet owing to the considerable losses suffered by its investors after its collapse in 2008.

That work could yet provide Wallis with a bit part giving evidence in one of next year's biggest civil cases when the Financial Markets Authority's lawsuit against Hanover's directors and promoters hits the High Court.

Wallis describes it as "a strange piece of litigation".

He's happy to discuss the merits of the case, even if his views appear to favour his client, but he also sees in it a feature of New Zealand law that has worked against investors seeking compensation for finance company losses.

D'Angelo sheds his 'naked guy' skin

    - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

For many here in New Zealand, the inaugural Soulfest will be a highlight of 2014's live schedule.

It brings together Maxwell, Common, Mos Def, Anthony Hamilton and Musiq Soulchild to Western Springs Stadium on Sunday, October 26. Though the bill is absolute quality, there's only one man that matters.

D'Angelo, the reclusive soul giant with only two LPs to his name, is the big draw card.

The man is a legend, not only to the fans, but to his fellow acts on the Soulfest bill. He was the pioneer of a unique brand of soul - some called it 'neo-soul', others said it was simply good music.

People say he's not relevant, but comb through the prominent artists of today, ranging from Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, James Blake, Frank Ocean and Pharrell to Panic! At the Disco (meh) and Chris Brown (ugh) and they'll tell you different.

He's made an impact on Aotearoa too: Six60, Fat Freddys Drop, Sola Rosa and basically any reggae or soul band consider D'Angelo a god. He's even been referenced him on American Dad and Perez Hilton, and butchered him on the The Voice.

Looking at various promos for Soulfest, there are blatant snapshots of D in the raunchy, seductive 'Untitled (How Does It Feel) video, a 25 year old with abs, white teeth and corn rows.

It's obviously tacked on to sell tickets and I don't blame the promoters, but that's not him anymore. He was, for a time, the archetypal, cliched sexy R&B guy. As far as today's general music consumers are concerned, D hasn't done anything noteworthy since the video, which is true.

Instead, he's become notorious for motivation issues, arrests, delays and no shows.

Besides Common, the Soulfest line-up seems based on nostalgia, a golden Mai FM era, afternoons spent watching Juice TV at the start of the millennium. When was the last time you heard a D'Angelo song on the radio outside of the occasional George/bfm weekend mix?

Residents' noise fears over college's change of plans

    - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A COMMON room and kitchen at a West Oxford tutorial college could cause unwanted noise pollution, residents fear.

Neighbours of the Cherwell College in Mill Street, off Botley Road, want reassurance over last-minute changes to plans for the college development at the end of their road.

A planning application has been submitted for the college building, due to be completed in December, which now includes the communal room and kitchen facilities.

Due to be home to 55 students aged 16 to 18, the buildings use has always been welcomed by residents, but they are concerned by the latest amendments.

    Our top stories

Planning has been approved and the application regarding a common room and kitchen facilities is a variation of the planning permission.

The proposed addition of the communal areas has caused uncertainty about noise levels and extra traffic on the West Oxford street.

Rosemary Preston, of Mill Street, said: We want it to work but not at a great cost to us the residents, and we are very concerned about when there will be service vehicles coming down our road.

The plan did not originally include provision for a common room or kitchen facility.

I am also concerned about noise levels.
