Area Education Agency 267 hires architect for conference center remodeling

    - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CEDAR FALLS | Plans to remodel Area Education Agency 267's conference center are expected to improve workflow in the building.

The agency's board of directors Wednesday approved contracting with Struxture Architects of Waterloo to design plans for the first phase of remodeling the facility at 3712 Cedar Heights Drive. Work stations will be updated for employees, which AEA 267 spokeswoman Beth Strike said will improve workflow.

"We have folks who just logistically aren't in the right place together to make their work conducive," she said. The remodeling is "something that's been needed for a very long time."

Construction costs are estimated at $783,300, or $950,000 when fees and contingencies are added. The board "approved up to $1 million of an expenditure for that," said Strike.

The board is expected to award a construction contract for the work at its February meeting. The first phase would be completed in the fall of 2015.

The board also approved an agreement with the Cedar Falls Community Schools to operate River Hills School, which serves students with significant cognitive disabilities. The agreement establishes a consortium of school districts that send students to River Hills to administer instructional programs. Superintendents of those more than 20 districts sit on a consortium board, including the Waterloo and Cedar Falls schools.

"The superintendents are on a board that facilitates the general operations" of the school, said Rod Ball, assistant director of special education for AEA 267. "What the consortium does, it ensures that we can fund the program properly as the (Iowa) Department of Ed has given us instruction to do."

'Joe the Plumber' Leaks Political Support for Idaho House Candidate

    - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

His real name is Sam Wurzelbacher, but he's better known as "Joe the Plumber."

Wurzelbacher had his moment in the political limelight in 2008 when he confronted then-candidate Barack Obama about business taxes during a campaign stop in Ohio. Wurzelbacher wasn't a plumber; he says he wanted to buy a plumbing business. Obama's challenger, John McCain, started using "Joe the Plumber" in campaign events and Wurzelbacher tried his own hand at politics, losing to an Ohio state representative in 2012.

Wurzelbacher has, on more than one occasion, been caught with foot-in-mouth. In June 2012, he tied gun control to the Holocaust, made some controversial remarks about immigration ("For years I've said put a damn fence on the border going to Mexico and start shooting.") and wrote an inappropriate letter to the parents of victims of a mass shooting in California ("As harsh as this soundsyour dead kids don't trump my Constitutional rights").

On Oct. 4, the "plumber" was leaking some political hyperbole in Lewiston, where he campaigned for Republican House candidate Mike Kingsley, who is challenging Democratic Minority Leader Rep. John Rusche. Kingsley sailed onto the November ballot when he was unopposed as a write-in candidate during May's Republican primary.

After taking man to hospital, firefighters finish patients yard work

    - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CORONA, Calif. After a California fire crew treated a man who collapsed while mowing his lawn, firefighters sent him to the hospital. But then they finished the yard work themselves on Wednesday morning.

The sweet story was posted to the Corona Fire Departments Facebook page with a photo of two crew members sweeping up grass clippings on a residential sidewalk.

Serving our City with Pride, the Facebook post read.

KTLA reports that the crew from Engine 1 was responding to a call about a resident who lost consciousness while mowing his lawn, according to the post. First responders provided ALS treatment and sent the male patient to the hospital in an ambulance, the post stated, apparently referring to advanced life support service.

Firefighters stayed while the mans wife and baby prepared to go to the hospital, cleaning up and putting away the lawn mower, Fire Departments spokeswoman Lynn Mata said.

Local Corona resident loses consciousness while mowing his lawn.

We do that a lot. We look after our community its pretty tightly knit, Mata said.

The patient lost consciousness for unknown reasons then fell, injuring his nose and bloodying himself in the process, Mata said. He was treated and transported but was in pretty good shape after the 11 a.m. emergency response, she said.

The incident followed a similar heart-warming in Santa Barbara over the weekend.

In that incident, firefighters trimmed an elderly womans vegetation after she was injured by tripping over shrubbery.

New Lenox community rebuilds brothers' home

    - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

From the outside, the little white house looked abandoned. Set back from the quiet residential road and surrounded by towering trees, the place was the picture of neglect, with crooked front steps, a broken railing and a door that had been hung upside down and backward.

Inside lived three elderly brothers who, for decades, kept to themselves and rarely saw a visitor. Then, one day last November, a county building inspector pulled up in the gravel driveway. He gently explained that the brothers would have to bring their property up to code or the home could be condemned, and the brothers would be put out.

Their roof leaked, and wind blew through holes in the walls. More than a dozen cats roamed the yard, which was scattered with piles of junk. Still, it was home the only one the brothers had ever known. They could remember how their father, an immigrant from Italy, used to sing and play piano in the front room. One of his favorites was "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'."

    Oh, what a beautiful mornin',

    Oh, what a beautiful day,

    I've got a wonderful feelin',

    Everything's going my way.

"Year after year, we'd listen to him practice and sing," said Ray Sabec, 67, the youngest brother. "I am very sentimental. To me, everything is feeling and memory.

"That music is still there in the house."

Indeed, when the brothers looked at their dilapidated home, they could remember how it used to be.
