Denton bar owners filled City Council chambers two years ago to voice their concerns about how a proposed no-smoking ordinance might affect their business. Bars with outdoor patios, some claimed, would get an advantage because their patrons could smoke outside.

With the smoking ban, I know my equipment will last longer, but I dont know if my business will, said Lloyd Banks, owner of Rockin Rodeo, a bar without a patio. Can you guarantee that?

The city conceded to business owners pressure and adopted a smoking ban that exempted private clubs and bars that do not employ or admit persons younger than 18.

But now a community of bars in the Fry Street area has decided to voluntarily follow the citys lead and ban smoking indoors at their establishments, all of which have patios.

A bartender named Porter at Lucky Lous said the owners believed the city would be getting ready to go smoke-free in April, so they were just preparing for the inevitable.

Its better [for the customers], Porter said, and it smells better.

More than 40 cities in Texas have enacted smoking bans that include bars and restaurants, while another 38 cities have smoking bans that exempt bars, including Arlington, Fort Worth and Denton.

Alison Ream, the assistant to the city manager, said the city is not planning to force bars to comply with the smoking ordinance in April yet.

But the council might look at the ordinance and make some adjustments, Ream said.

They could consider [amending] the smoking ban. Theres no timeframe.

Oct. 04--The wind is so strong in Iowa and Kansas that more wind farms there could power the country's largest cities if only there was a way to move that electricity to where most people live.

Enter Michael Skelly, a Houston businessman who envisions building five superhighways -- transmission lines -- to carry vast amounts of wind-generated power across more than 3,000 miles, multiple states, hundreds of jurisdictions and thousands of pieces of privately owned land.

The lines, the diameter of a human arm, would be hoisted on 150-foot-tall structures, about the height of the Statue of Liberty foot to top of torch.

The founder and president of Clean Line Energy Partners has two $2 billion lines in the works that would slice through Illinois: Rock Island Clean Line across the top of the state, and Grain Belt Express downstate, each shipping enough electricity to power 1.4 million homes annually. Importing that much cheap wind power has the potential to dramatically cut electricity prices in Illinois and help the state meet its goals of deriving 25 percent of its energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar by 2025.

Skelly's idea is that with high-voltage lines crisscrossing the United States from every area where the wind blows, they would nearly always carry wind-generated power. That's significant because in Illinois and states to the east, wind blows intermittently, which results in electricity generated in fits and starts.

"This is necessary and helpful to a cleaner energy mix, a more diverse energy portfolio," said Skelly, 52. "If it's all connected, then the wind is always going to be blowing somewhere. Not all the time. But with a much higher confidence interval."

His efforts have brought together an odd collection of bedfellows, pro and con, who, under any other circumstance, would be unlikely pals at a Texas barbecue.

On his side is an army of nouveau environmentalists who see this businessman's for-profit transmission line company as a way to save the world, because wind power doesn't produce greenhouse gas or contribute to climate change. They are aging ranchers, whip-smart Rice University graduates, engineers who jumped ship from wind companies, Republican politicians and people like Eleanor Elbert.

Just 24, the soft-spoken 2012 Princeton University grad was in Belize four years ago with other environmentalists fighting offshore drilling. Today, Elbert is fighting on the side of an energy company instead of against it.

"I've always been concerned about climate change," she said. "This could enable so much wind power to get integrated into the grid."

As has often been reported, Ebola apparently cant be spread through the air by coughing or sneezing. But if infected sweat, mucus or saliva gets on doorknobs or countertops, the Ebola virus can be spread for several hours by someone touching the surface and then touching theireyes, nose, mouth or an open cut. Presumably it can be spread by handshaking as well, if the infected person had gotten his saliva or mucus on his hands. Not terribly reassuring, sad to say. Heres the CDC Q&A.

Ebola has been detected in blood and many body fluids. Body fluids include saliva, mucus, vomit, feces, sweat, tears, breast milk, urine and semen.

Can Ebola spread by coughing? By sneezing?

Unlike respiratory illnesses like measles or chickenpox, which can be transmitted by virus particles that remain suspended in the air after an infected person coughs or sneezes, Ebola is transmitted by direct contact with body fluids of a person who has symptoms of Ebola disease. Although coughing and sneezing are not common symptoms of Ebola, if a symptomatic patient with Ebola coughs or sneezes on someone, and saliva or mucus come into contact with that persons eyes, nose or mouth, these fluids may transmit the disease.

What does direct contact mean?

Direct contact means that body fluids (blood, saliva, mucus, vomit, urine, or feces) from an infected person (alive or dead) have touched someones eyes, nose or mouth or an open cut, wound or abrasion.

How long does Ebola live outside the body?

Ebola is killed with hospital-grade disinfectants (such as household bleach). Ebola dried on surfaces such as doorknobs and countertops can survive for several hours; however, virus in body fluids (such as blood) can survive up to several days at room temperature

The old bathroom dividers will become the new countertops. This is no joke. When Bexley moves city hall out of its soon-to-be-demolished building and into the strip mall next door, it will bring along the heavy gray marble slabs that once separated one mans business from anothers.

And people will put food on them.

I have been assured that they will be properly sanitized, said the mayors assistant, Debbie Maynard.

When the hallmark of your project is clever repurposing, this kind of thing happens.

By the end of January, the people who run Bexley will have cleared out of the 65-year-old building at 2242 E. Main St., which will then be demolished to make way for the much-anticipated, two-story Giant Eagle Market District Express.

City Hall is moving just a few yards away, to the back of the Bexley Square shopping center. It will fill up the space that once housed the beloved Bexley Monk restaurant, a $790,000 repurposing project that presented its own special challenges.

Well, (the mayor) told you about the smell, didnt he? said architect Andrew Rosenthal.

Grease. Overwhelming, dense, clinging-to-the-walls grease, the byproduct of years of frying and sauteing and baking. The grease stench was so entrenched that displacing it involved replacing some heating and cooling equipment, Rosenthal said.

The smell is gone now. So is the restaurants bar and all of the well-built features that made it distinctly a place to serve and eat food. Clearing it out proved harder than anticipated. In some cases where workers might have expected wood, they found concrete.
