GOSHEN, Ind. -- WNDU surprised Goshen High School teacher Jordan Willsey with the news that he was the winner of this years 16 Curb Appeal Project. He teaches kids to stay in school and set high goals.

Service to me is paying back for what others did for me, said Willsey. I had a lot of stuff done for me in the past. So it's paying it forward to students and future soldiers.

Jordan served two tours in Iraq and is currently a staff sergeant with Grissom Air Reserve base.

He had one request of the landscape makeover: a place where he could fly his flag at his Mishawaka home. A storm took down his flag pole last year.

Mark Linton from Lintons Enchanted Gardens inspected Willseys front yard.

Right now we've got this huge Sycamore in the way, said Linton. It's probably the most ideal place to fly a flag.

The tree came down thanks to the quick work of Big B's Tree Service of Elkhart that donated their work to our 16 Curb Appeal project.

With a clean slate, the Linton crews went to work following exciting blueprints that not only extended the landscaping down the sloping yard, but added stone terraces for beauty and function.

The old front porch landscaping had timbers and tired shrubs. The new look features the stone wall and a flower bed for annuals.

16 Curb Appeal: The final reveal

If youre thinking about adding a swimming pool to your property, or if youre already the owner of a pool and want to make it more attractive, here are a few landscape design ideas that will help you make your pool a visual asset to your home.

Want to make a landscape plan for your pool? Consider your swimming pool to be a bullseye in the center of a dartboard with four rings. Even if your in-ground or above ground pool isnt built in the shape of a circle, the landscaping surrounding your pool should radiate outward. If you think of these layers around the perimeter of your pool as "rings," you can draw up a plan that treats each ring as a distinct part of a whole. Your first ring is the immediate area around the pool. The second ring is a transitional area. The third ring can hold gardens or plants, and the fourth ring can be a separate space such as patio or deck or it could be left natural.

Get design ideas for all your outdoor spaces.

If youve got an in-ground pool, this first "ring" around your pool is probably a hardscape area such as a concrete border or patio that immediately surrounds the pool. An easy way to beautify this space is to use two or four dramatic, oversized potted succulents that require little maintenance and wont shed loose leaves or other debris into the pool water. As your radiate out to the second "ring" around your pool, keep in mind what you use this space for: Is this a concrete or brick area where your lounge chairs and umbrella table reside? Or is this space natural yard, woods, trees, etc.? If youre looking to organize or emphasize this space, you could plant blue sapphire cypress trees in this ring to create a wall of privacy. Or perhaps youd prefer to have this ring transition to a formal garden.

Above-ground pools dont have to be an eyesore. The key is to integrate the pool into its surroundings and tie it into the style of your home and landscaping. For example, if you can afford to add hardscapes to the first "ring" around your above-ground pool, you might consider constructing a deck that covers the exterior of your pool and also acts as a transitional area to which the rest of your yard can connect. If dealing with a limited budget, consider painting the outside of your pool walls to blend better with the environment and plant short shrubs around the outside of the pool to minimize visual intrusion.

Use the bullseye approach to landscape your pool and remember to keep bushes, flowers and grasses away from the first ring around your pool to minimize debris. Whats the point in having a beautifully landscaped pool area if all of your plants end up in the water?

WASHINGTON A giant portrait of a man has emerged in the landscape of the National Mall in the first such public artwork commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery.

Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodrguez-Gerada created the piece as a compilation of American faces after photographing 30 young men on the National Mall this year, he said Wednesday. The piece is titled Out of Many, One, the English translation of E pluribus unum from the U.S. seal.

The six-acre portrait is made of 2,500 tons of sand and 800 tons of topsoil and can be viewed from the Washington Monument or from space. At ground level, the artist said its like a Zen garden. All the materials were donated.

The artwork adds a new element to the mall, the stretch of green space, museums and memorials from the Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capitol, known as the nations front lawn.

Rodrguez-Gerada said he set out to create one of millions of possible faces of America, and he said men between 18 and 25 need to be embraced. It doesnt represent a particular race, he said, but was a compilation of faces that were black, brown and white.

Diversity is the backbone that makes this country great, he said. This is a great way of celebrating that.

He used GPS technology to mark 10,000 points with tiny pegs on an empty field and then linked them with twine to create precise lines for the portrait made of dirt.

From start to finish, the work took six months, with the installation taking only a few weeks. Key to the work is seeing different things from different angles, with the emergence of a face only visible from a distance.

Asked if the portrait was meant to be Latino because of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and his own background, Rodrguez-Gerada who was born in Cuba and raised in New Jersey said he was not creating a Latino face and his connection to the project was serendipity.

THEFT On the 300 block of Oxford Valley Road, reported at 1:30 p.m. Complainant reports that sometime between Sept. 18 and Sept. 24, unknown person(s) removed a landscaper trailer and two mowers from the location. Approximate value is $2,000.

THEFT On the 1500 block of Big Oak Road at Hair Cuttery, reported at 3:49 p.m. Complainant reports unknown person(s) removed a pair of Meko 5.5 professional shears. Approximate value is $150.

UNDERAGE DRINKING At River and Mt. Eyre roads, reported at 10:48 p.m. Police on patrol observed suspicious vehicles at the location. Further investigation led to the discovery of underage drinking. An 18-year-old male from Levittown and an 18-year-old male from Fairless Hills were cited for underage drinking.

LOCAL tensions are running high ahead of the parliamentary debate on the divisive native vegetation bill that's expected to take place in the next fortnight.

The controversial Shooters and Fishers Party amendment was formed in consultation with NSW Farmers and was introduced in May this year.

The bill has faced repeated delays, divided the National Party and inflamed emotions in the wake of the alleged murder of environment officer Glen Turner over a land-clearing dispute in July.

Walgett farmer Cameron Rowntree said NSW Farmers was eager for changes to the "ridiculous" existing land-clearing laws.

"The definition of broadscale clearing has to change one tree is not broadscale clearing,"he said.

He said there was a disparity where residents of Mosman could take chainsaws to their trees because of a bushfire risk, while farmers were heavily restrained by legislation.

"We can't even take out one tree now that's a joke," he said.

Land-clearing debate tensions run high

GOFFSTOWN Devriendt Farm, located at 178 South Mast Road in Goffstown, is preparing to expand onto a nearby 140-acre property, the latest evolution of the family-owned business.

Were trying to build the next generation [of our family business] and to have the capability to support that generation, said Lea Devriendt, who owns the farm with her husband, Dan. Finding that was awesome. You just dont find land like this around here anymore.

The family has been in the market to acquire new land for about five years, Devriendt said Tuesday. She and her husband finalized the sale of their new property last Friday. The property is on Story Road, adjacent to the Stonebridge Country Club, and was originally established as a farm in 1797.

Devriendt said that the land is mostly flat, making it ideal for farming. However, the property is mostly forested, and will require clearing before the land can be used for farming.

The Devriendts started their business in 1986, shortly after the births of their twin sons, Jesse and Jason. Both sons and their daughter, Erica, work for the farm with their parents.

We just grew tomatoes, and I peddled the tomatoes to the local delis and a couple of pizza places and stuff like that, Devriendt said. The couple would later have a portable farm stand near Goffstown High School and eventually bought their eight-acre property on South Mast Road in 1995.

In the Devriendts time in business, they have seen ups and downs.

Business 10 years ago was a lot better than it is today, Devriendt said. When we first started, we were doing a lot of produce and not so many flowers, and now were doing way more flowers than produce. We had a lot of wholesale accounts back then, and dont do hardly any wholesaling anymore, because we just dont have the product.

With their new land, the Devriendts hope to expand their operation, getting back into wholesale of their products, growing more chrysanthemums and having pick-your-own strawberries and pumpkins.

(Wed like it to be) more of a family destination, Devriendt said, adding that they would also like to have a corn maze on the new property. The strawberries are going to be the most important thing for us to get in right away, because thatll be the quickest turnaround for us.
