AN Albury woman who lit a fire that went on to burn about 30 hectares of bush on Nail Can Hill has mental health issues, a court has found.

The womans car quickly became engulfed by flames after she set fire to grass near Nail Can Hill.

When asked why she had lit the blaze, the 56-year-old woman told police: Want to make smoke for symbol of Olympic Games.

It was at 2.41pm on December 29 last year that the woman used a cigarette lighter to set fire to grass and leaves in Rosedale Drive, West Albury.

She parked her car about 150 metres from the end of a bitumen road, where the landscape is native bushland.

The fire spread quickly towards Nail Can Hill, and also engulfed the womans car.

She became frightened and ran from the area, waving down a woman passing by in a car.

My shoe is broken and I just set my car on fire, she told the witness.

NO MAN is an island. So is a building or space. Building and the rooms inside them must be designed in such a manner that it maintains that vital connection with the outdoors. The way an architect or interior designer would zone rooms and spaces is not just to satisfy efficiency of function in terms of user activity but also to maximize entry of outdoor natural light and ventilation, frame breathtaking views and keep the user of the man-made realm constantly in touch with the natural environment.

This interconnection between building interiors and natural exteriors spurred the design approach of young Cebuano interior designer Jan Iben Amper in his entry to this years Metrobank Art and Design Excellence interior design competition. Entitled Bale, which is a native Ifugao house, the design was given a special citation by the jurors.

The challenge was to create an observation deck on the 61st floor of the Metrobank Financial Center inside the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

Afforded with a 209-square-meter area for the deck, the interior designer weaved into it the character of the indigenous structure. The bales pyramidal space on sturdy, high- post construction seems to jive well with the decks location on top of a high-rise building. This gives the visitor a good panorama of the bustling city. The one-roomed interior allows for flexibility of movement and opportunities for creating openings where visitors can look at both the tranquil and dynamic scenes below.

To fully highlight the obstruction-free space, Amper made a strategic play of lighting in the space.

(sic) The ceiling lighting fixtures are in an inclined position, angled away from the glass walls in order not to put a direct sharp reflection from its illumination to the glass walls that may interrupt the overlooking views of the outside, explains the interior design graduate from the University of San Carlos.

The designer made sure that floor lightings were minimized since people look outside for the view; they are likely to look down, therefore (they might) see reflections from (their) background, mostly at the lower portion. Furniture was kept low and carefully placed. Seats with backrest were placed at the back part and away from the glass walls, while those without backrest were given space at the central area.

Lastly, dark and neutral colors are incorporated for the permanent and major architectural elements of the interior such as the ceiling, walls and floors in order to produce a seamless or almost invisible background when people look at the view outside through the glass walls at night, he continues.

The deck welcomes all the necessary elements that are supposed to enhance the spatial openness and outdoor appreciation. This is another intangible Filipino quality of space that reminds an individual about the deeply admired Filipino hospitality. The welcoming aspect of the space also reinforces the decks function as a public area.

Architecture and its interiors are not supposed to be insensitive elements in the environment that isolates the person from the realities of the outside. A building being grounded on the earth is enough reason for it to interact positively with nature, andzzmv allowing its users to feel its soothing caress even if they are partly enclosed by concrete, steel and glass.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a home security video has turned out to be priceless for a Hancock County family.

Cameras at Dustin Davis' home captured two burglars ransacking his family's home.

"It disrupts your life. Your sense of security is gone," Davis said.

The two men are first recorded outside the Davises' home by exterior cameras. After climbing through a living room window, thieves spend more than 30 minutes grabbing everything they can carry. Strategically-placed interior cameras even recorded the thieves going up and down the stairs, carrying the family's belongings.

The video shows the burglars stacking their stash at the back door.

"With technology the way it is and social media and everything else, nine times out of ten you are going to get caught," Davis said.

"A picture is worth a thousand words," said Hancock County Sheriff's Captain Jeff Rasche.

So is home security video for investigators, who say just like the Davis break-in, the same kind of crime could be happening at a home near you.

"The same people that are doing these crimes in Hancock County are also doing them in Shelby County, Johnson County, Marion County and Hamilton County," Rasche said.

After a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised $250,000 and a first-generation product that promised remote viewing of anyone coming to your front door over your home network, Doorbot is rebranding as Ring, and introduced redesigned hardware with more of a focus on home security, and a design that should help it better fit in with its surroundings and compliment existing house design choices.

Ring founder and CEO Jamie Siminoff admits that while Doorbot was mostly a success, it was also very much a first-generation product, complete with its own flaws and shortcomings, the feedback from which went into informing the design of Ring. Ring as a brand is designed to encompass more than just a telepresence solution for your front door; the intent was to create a company image that could apply to total home security, with a view to the future and connected home treatment of home protection.

With the Ring doorbell, early on when we were designing it, we decided what we were really doing was designing the alarm system literally turned inside out, Siminoff said. Not an alarm system that copied what ABT is doing, what Canary is doing, or even what Dropcam was doing with its window and door systems, but actually building some kind of pre-crime system.

Ring can alert users to motion as soon as its detected, in addition to recording video, alerting users to any potential crime before it even happens. Often this means they can remotely answer the door even if theyre on the other side of the world, which can be enough to prevent something before its even happened. Two-way communication on the device works like a phone call, instead of the push-to-talk features of the Doorbot, which makes it easier to communicate with whoevers at the door, and wide-angle video is also recorded to the cloud in HD resolution.

Whereas Doorbot was designed primarily as a doorbell, Ring is conceived of as a security measure first, and Siminoff admits that in addition to its functional evolution, the hardware has also gotten much better in terms of design.

The Doorbot, I think it turned out in the end to be a good product, but I certainly wouldnt say it was the best product, Siminoff said in an interview. We now sort of looked at the world with, we have to compare our products to Apple, regardless of whether we compete with them or not, and I dont think we succeeded at that level.

Siminoff says that regardless of whether a gadget theyre creating is something that Apple is also currently selling, it behooves any hardware maker out there to compare themselves to Cupertino, because thats what years of iPhone sales have done to consumer expectations. Even Apple, to some extent, is battling with its own good reputation, Siminoff points out, and general consumers now expect that level of quality and design from all their various electronic devices.

But the main selling point, Siminoff says, will still be its role in adding another layer to a sense of security. Thats because it fits into a role where a large portion of daytime crime is happening anyway.

We started to see with [Doorbot] very quickly, that the appearance of being home or being home was one of the best preventative measures for daytime crime, Siminoff said. Over 1 million burglaries [per year] just in the U.S. alone occur during the day when no ones home. Its one of the most likely crimes for you to be affected by from a statistical side, and 80 percent of those crimes start with the front door.
