Designs for an eyecatching development on one of the last remaining riverside sites in Newcastle have been released.
The plans for Malmo Quay, close to the Ouseburn, include a viewing platform giving views over the Tyne and come after three internationally-renowned architecture practices won a competition to develop the area.
Paris-based AWP Architects will work with London practices Mikhail Riches Architects and Featherstone Young Architects on the designs for the site, beating practices from Newcastle, London, Edinburgh, Paris and Berlin.
The development will include 60 apartments along with a new home for the Cycle Hub, which will be publicly accessible from the riverfront.
Work is now under way to create a development brief, which will outline the possibilities for the site.
David Roberts, director at regeneration specialist igloo, said: We have held an initial workshop with all three winning architects and they are now working as a team to bring a hugely exciting scheme to Newcastles waterfront.
This is a fantastic opportunity to develop the site and create an inspiring, innovative area in a spectacular location.
We are now hoping to quickly conclude our negotiations with Newcastle City Council for the quay wall, so we can begin development as soon as possible at what will be a key site for the city.
The new designs planned at Malmo Quay, Ouseburn including the new ramp and observatory at the Cycle Hub
Landowners Newcastle City Council and the Homes and Communities Agency are now preparing the conditions requirement for development at Malmo Quay, in partnership with developers Carillion igloo Ltd (CiL).

SINGAPORE: Architects in the Republic have been urged by the Senior Minister of State for National Development Mr Lee Yi Shyan to innovate in their town planning and design strategies, while rejuvenating older towns and adding newer towns with tighter space constraints.
Speaking at the opening of Archifest Conference 2014 on Monday (Sep 29), Mr Lee said innovation is important amid technological advances, evolving demographics and changing social habits. "We have to create the space and environment to sustain future economic activities as much as social interaction, amongst other critical functions of a city state. It is in this context that research and development and innovation play an instrumental role in our next phase of urbanisation, he said.
The conference, which was held in conjunction with the inaugural edition of the Archxpo 2014, aims to bring together the best minds in architecture to share and showcase the latest technologies. Archxpo 2014 is an international exhibition for architecture and the built environment.

WASHINGTON
Marylander Thomas E. Perez, who has served as secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor for a little more than a year, is now being eyed for an even more prominent position in President Barack Obama's second-term Cabinet: successor to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.
Perez, a former Maryland labor secretary and Justice Department official, is emerging as a candidate in part because of his extensive legal background but also because he has a close relationship with the president and shares a similar political worldview, supporters said.
White House aides declined to discuss the process publicly, but an official familiar with the effort confirmed Perez is one of several people under consideration. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. and Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney in New York, are among others whose names have been floated for the job.
Perez, a 52-year-old Takoma Park resident, joined the Justice Department in 1989 and was named head of the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation under Gov. Martin O'Malley in 2007. He returned to Justice in 2009 to lead the department's civil rights division.
He also served on the Montgomery County Council and worked for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat, who died in 2009.
"He understands the importance of fairness and opportunity," said Victoria Schultz, associate dean at the University of Baltimore School of Law, who worked for Perez at the civil rights division. "He doesn't make decisions lightly, and he likes to listen to everybody around the table."
Despite many strengths, Perez's selection also would pose serious challenges for the Obama administration. As a practical matter, shifting Perez from one Cabinet post to another would require two confirmation battles in the Senate one for Perez at Justice and another for his replacement at Labor.
And if Perez's confirmation to lead Labor last year is any indication, he would likely face resistance on Capitol Hill. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell referred to him then as a "crusading ideologue," and he was confirmed only as part of a broader deal to avoid wholesale change to Senate rules.
Republicans, led by Sen. Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, criticized Perez over what they described as a "shady" deal in which the Justice Department allegedly dropped a lawsuit against the city of St. Paul, Minn., in 2012 in exchange for the city dropping separate civil rights litigation against the federal government.

A new Bud Light ad stars Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp dressed as a pirate and focuses on remodeling the living room of a Tampa Bay fan into a Buccaneers man cave.
The home makeover, part of the beers Up for Whatever campaign, also includes a backyard pirate ship replete with working cannons.
The Bucs-themed ad, which started running nationally Sunday, features Alex, who is indeed a huge fan of the team, says Lindsey Herzog, who handles Anheuser-Busch accounts for the Weber Shandwick public relations firm.
The Buccaneerd spot begins with Alex, wearing a Bucs T-shirt, loading a case of Bud Light into his car at a store, which means hes up for whatever, says the narrator.
In an instant, Alex is surprised with a newly furnished living room that is more cove than cave, with Bucs gear, head-to-toe skeleton and even a Captain Fear mascot knickknack. Friends in Bucs apparel are already relaxing inside, enjoying their Bud Light.
Then Sapp adorned in tri-cornered hat, frock coat and shoulder-perched parrot barges in to greet the No. 1 Buc fan. Sapp leads Alex to the backyard galleon, Alex yells, Im going to fire the cannons, and the commerical closes with a loud blast from the ships faux artillery.
Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev, which brews Bud Light, began a six-year sponsorship deal with the NFL in 2011.
