Mold forces family to flee home

    - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Two stories sit on a grassy, corner lot that overlooks a pond, just a short walk to the community's pool. Stucco is adorned with decorative window shutters, and tropical landscape fences off the neighbors. Muffled shouts from young children playing can be heard throughout the small gated community.

Two ceramic garden gnomes still stand by the front door, their grins reminding Shaun and Jennifer Carlson of better days.

In the garage, a mountain of white trash bags store the couple's belongings, and a young girl's metal scooter leans against a wooden kitchen table darkened by mold.

Blotches of mold also can be seen throughout the abandoned house.

For the past two years, the Carlsons and their three children have battled constant illness, financial distress and emotional turmoil as mold overtook their home.

We didn't think we could afford a new house. It was a nice step up, Jennifer Carlson said. We thought we were making a good decision, but then very quickly, it all crashed down on us.

For that, they blame builder D.R. Horton, which they claim failed to remediate the mold spores quickly enough.

In a written statement, the national homebuilder stands by its response to the outbreak. The company says it has taken appropriate steps to find a solution and that most of the mold has since been remediated.

We did not develop the lots in Palmer Oaks; however, we are committed to resolving the drainage issue for our homeowners, the company's statement said. The satisfaction of our homeowners is a top priority, and we are committed to superior customer service and providing families with quality homes and neighborhoods in the Sarasota area.

Top Senate Republican Barrasso warns against lame duck Holder replacement

    - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published September 29, 2014

The simmering bipartisan battle over whether the Senate will try to swiftly replace retiring Attorney General Eric Holder heated up Sunday, with a top Senate Republican saying such a move would show the desperation Democrats feel about possibly losing control next month of the upper chamber.

It does need to wait, Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, chairman of the Senates Republican Policy Committee, told Fox News Sunday." I am opposed to any successor during the lame-duck session.

Political analysts essentially give Republicans a slightly more than 50 percent chance of winning a net total of six seats on Nov. 4 to take control of the Senate. However, the GOP would not officially take over the chamber until January.

Barrasso said if the Democrat-controlled Senate appoints a President Obama nominee it will mark the first time since the Civil War that an attorney general has been appointed in a so-called lame duck session -- the period between when new senators are elected and the other party takes control of the chamber.

Though Republicans are no fans of Holder, Barrasso said any attempt by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to swiftly replace him would be the final act is his failed leadership of the chamber.

Holder, who resigned on Thursday, is the countrys first black attorney general and is considered an unflinching champion of civil rights in enforcing the nation's laws.

He led the Justice Department since the first days of Obama's presidency and is the fourth-longest serving attorney general in U.S. history.

However, he has faced strong criticism during his tenure -- at times bipartisan -- for a succession of controversies including a failed plan to try terrorism suspects in New York City, the botched gun-running probe along the Southwest border that prompted Republican calls for his resignation, and what was seen as a failure to hold Wall Street accountable for the financial system's near-meltdown.

The Republican-controlled House voted two years ago to make Holder the first sitting Cabinet member to be held in contempt of Congress -- for refusing to turn over documents in the gun-running operation known as Operation Fast and Furious. The administration is still fighting in court to keep the documents confidential.

Homebuyer assistance grant moves into final year

    - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In August, Western Egyptian Economic Opportunity Council moved into the second year of a two-year grant for its Homebuyer Program. The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) awarded the council $700,000 in assistance funding, which is still available to eligible low-income applicants.

According to Robert Schroeder, Western Egyptian's housing coordinator, program funding assists residents in Jackson, Perry, Randolph and Monroe Counties with down payment and closing costs, home repairs and homebuyer education.

The program provides assistance up to $10,000 in down payment and closing costs, which is forgiven over a five or ten year period and becomes a grant. There are no payments and no interest charges for this assistance.

The program also provides funding for repairs to the home, typically up to $24,000. The kind of rehabilitation homes may receive includes needed repairs or replacements to roofing, siding, installation, windows, doors, electrical, furnace and plumbing. Rehabilitation helps bring homes up to at least the Section 8 Housing Quality Standards.

To be eligible applicants must have a household income at or below 80 percent of the area median income, must be able to qualify for a loan from a participating lender, and must occupy the property to be rehabilitated as their main residence.

Western Egyptian is a not for profit service organization which was chartered in 1965, with an 18-member board of directors, serving Jackson, Monroe, Perry, and Randolph Counties. The board consists of public officials, low- income representatives and members of major organizations and groups of the community.

Western Egyptian provides a range of services, other than its Homebuyer Program, which utilize available resources to deal with problems of low income and disadvantaged residents.
