CHICAGO -- The nation's air travel system slowly began to recover Saturday after an alleged act of employee sabotage at a large regional air traffic control center brought Chicago's two international airports to a halt.
At the height of the travel misery Friday, more than 2,000 flights in and out of O'Hare and Midway airports had been canceled, sending waves of travel disruption rippling across the country.

Authorities say a contract employee started a fire Friday morning in the basement telecommunications room of a control center in the Chicago suburb of Aurora and then attempted to commit suicide by slashing his throat. Brian Howard, 36, of Naperville, was charged with destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities, a felony. The FBI said Howard remains hospitalized and no court date has been scheduled.
As of late Saturday afternoon, total Chicago flight cancelations for the day stood at more than 780 - still a damagingly high number, but an improvement. Southwest Airlines, the dominant carrier at Midway, had hoped to resume a full flight schedule Saturday, but had to cancel all flights between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. CDT.
Lines remained long at O'Hare, which is a major U.S. hub. Many travelers stranded overnight slept on cots provided by the airport, in scenes reminiscent of winter storm disruptions.
The Federal Aviation Administration facility in Aurora, about 40 miles west of downtown Chicago, handles planes cruising at high altitudes through the air space as well as those just beginning to approach or completing a departure from airports in the Chicago area. It remained shut down Saturday, and its responsibilities have been transferred to centers in Cleveland, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Minneapolis. The FAA's command center in Warrenton, Virginia, was also working to increase the traffic flow.

Tye Angland is hoping a week of sweat can create further spring Group One opportunities beyond a lightweight Epsom Handicap mount on Saturday.
Angland has taken the Epsom ride on Star Rolling, a Victorian-trained miler who has 53kg in the $500,000 race.
Given he has ridden around 55kg since returning from Hong Kong a few months ago, Angland is preparing for a week of diet and exercise to make Star Rolling's weight.
"It's not going to be easy. It's going to be a long week," Angland said.
"But it's about trying to push myself and seeing how low (in weight) I can get if something pops up in the big races coming up."
Trained by Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison, Star Rolling has been campaigning in Melbourne weight-for-age races, winning the PB Lawrence Stakes before finishing midfield in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes and the Underwood Stakes.
Apprentice Winona Costin is waiting for trainer David Payne to make a decision on Honorius to find out if she will have her first Epsom ride.
"Because he's got a light weight and I've ridden him before there's a chance I could be on him if he runs," Costin said.
Costin's most recent ride on Honorius resulted in a close fifth to Entirely Platinum at Rosehill last month.
She also rode the five-year-old when he last figured in the placings before a spell.

Angland sheds the kilos for Epsom ride
CEDAR POINT | The Croatan National Forests most popular campground is getting a facelift.
The U.S. Forest Service announced it would spend about $700,000 in renovations to the Cedar Point Campground on the southwest corner of the Croatan National Forest near Cape Carteret.
Its exciting to know that they are renovating this place. Well definitely come back next year, said camper Aleah Schoengut, of Clarksville, Tenn.
She stayed two nights recently at the campsite with her husband and dog. She said the family likes the Cedar Point site because of its proximity to the beach and its forested setting.
The campground, located on the White Oak River, will close on Tuesday for the five-month renovation project that involves replacement of an aging and failing sewer system, relocation of a sewer dump station for recreational vehicles, an upgrade of electrical systems at campsites from 30 amps to 50 amps, renovation to the campsites and renovation to the bathroom and shower building with water-saving fixtures.
This project is a substantial investment in the Croatan National Forest and the community as a whole, Croatan District Ranger Jim Gumm said. The large dollar figure reflects the amount of work thats needed at the site and the important role this premier recreation destination plays in North Carolina.
The campground has 40 camp sites with nearby bathroom and showers, electrical hookups and available potable water.
Im glad theyre doing the work on it, said camper David Bobbitt, of Littleton. It took a long time.
Bobbitt said he has been coming to the campground for the last four or five years with his wife Grace.
It got so the septic system needed work on it, Bobbitt said. We didnt come much this year simply because they said they were going to be closing it. Its a fantastic park and its usually filled up. We really enjoy it.
