The cost to rebuild the century-old swimming pool at Ottawa Township High School could top $1 million, Superintendent Matt Winchester reported at Monday's school board meeting.
Informally known as the Pirate Puddle, the pool was closed before the start of the school year after cracks, corrosion and crumbling brick and concrete walls that have broken loose from one another were discovered during a maintenance inspection.
Winchester said the engineering firm which evaluated the pool recommended the pool's glazed brick liner be removed and replaced with a concrete liner. The drain gutter also would be removed and replaced with a new gutter overflow system. Those improvements plus a new pump and filter systems would cost an estimated $156,000.
However, additional necessary work including plumbing, ventilation, mechanical, controls, electric and structural changes would boost the total cost from $800,000 to more than $1 million, Winchester said.
Even then, the rebuilt pool would still not be regulation size and possibly be slightly reduced, he said.
Winchester said the reconstruction would need to be evaluated to see if it qualified as a "life safety" project. Those projects typically are financed by selling bonds, which are paid off through property tax revenue.
He said if it did not qualify for life safety funds the project would be a huge undertaking for the district, which already is operating at a $3 million deficit. That deficit is being covered by the sale of other bonds which are funneled into a "working cash" fund.
Winchester asked the board to discuss the options.
Instead, Board President Tim Creedon delegated the issue to a subcommittee of the Deficit Reduction/Revenue Enhancement Committee that will begin meeting again starting in October.
Winchester said he was thankful that in the meantime, the swim team is able to practice at the Ottawa and Streator YMCAs.

Fall Grass Seeding and Aerating the Lawn with the Garden Tiller - September 20, 2014 - Video

Q: My lawn has several spots that Id like to re-seed. Can I do that job now? R.P., West Side
A: Perhaps. It just depends on what type of grass you have for a lawn.
If you are dealing with warm season grasses like native buffalo, blue grama or bermuda, I doubt the soil will stay warm enough, long enough for the re-seeded spots to gain a foothold.
If your lawn is made of cool season types of grass like Kentucky blue, any of the fescues or rye grasses then, yes, this is a grand time to do the re-seeding! One of the pluses, too, since the weather is cooling, is your chances of growing a crop of weeds at the same time is lessened.
First, youll want to scratch away any dead thatch out of the area down to dirt. If you need to bring the soil level up to grade, then spread top soil on the spots. Dampen it just a bit and spread the seed, then tamp it down firmly. You want the spots dampened so the seed is more apt to grabbing hold and sitting still, so to speak.
After tamping, cover the area with a slight -to -inch layer of top soil. Thatll keep the seed in place, assist in keeping the seed moist, and out of view of hungry birds!
For the next several weeks you will need to keep those spots sprinkled. Water at least twice a day and, maybe if the afternoon temperatures stay toasty, more often. Your goal is to not let those spots dry out. Within 10 to 15 days, the seed should have germinated and youll be seeing green.
Now, I will suggest you do not fertilize the lawn, spots and all, with a high-nitrogen content established lawn fertilizer. The young grass is still far too tender to deal with a full-strength feeding. If you feel the need and the established lawn would love it invest in a starter-style fertilizer making sure that it has a high level of phosphorus.
Its the phosphorus, the middle number of the fertilizer calculation, which is used by plantlife to feed and create healthy root. With cooler temperatures, adequate water and loving care from you, its a great time to re-seed your cool season grass style lawn.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The planned installation of new turf at Kyle Field has progressed more rapidly than expected and will allow the process to begin on Saturday, Sept. 27.
Carolina Green, assisted by Texas A&M University personnel, hopes to start laying the sod late on Saturday and should have the installation completed by Tuesday, Sept. 30.
The sod is being shipped from North Carolina and will arrive in 24-28, refrigerated semi-trailer trucks.
There will be no public access to the stadium during the installation, but it can be viewed via the Kyle Field webcam at http://www.kylefield.com.
The Texas A&M Football team is planning to practice on the new turf sometime before they depart to play Mississippi State on Oct. 4. The first home game on the new field will be on Oct. 11 versus Ole Miss.

There are new sidewalk additions in Kakaako and they may be showing up elsewhere in downtown. Its a feature that has shown up in a number of urban settings on the mainland.
These gazebos are cute cute enough to be called parklets. Its the citys first venture into reclaiming more space for pedestrians in downtown Honolulu.
These two parklets happen to be in front of Hanks Haute Dogs on Coral Street in Kakaako.
What parklets do is that, essentially, it extends the people zone into the street, and thats an important thing, and it does that to activate the street, said George Atta, director of the citys Department of Planning and Permitting.
Its all part of an overall urban plan to make downtown more livable for residents.
With the rail coming through, they are part of our transit-oriented development, Atta said.
The parklets are a cooperative effort among Kamehameha Schools, Honolulu and private merchants.
This was a long conversation both with our merchants here, with government, and within our own organization, said Kekoa Paulson of Kamehameha Schools. This is new as far as the kinds of things Kamehameha Schools does, so partnership is key. Its important that whoever is being touched by it has a voice in it.
The idea is not novel it has been used successfully in San Francisco and Chicago.
The idea is to have these structures be a part of the community and the sidewalk and enhance the overall pedestrian experience throughout Kakaako, said architect Scott Harada.
