Hot homes: 'Canoe on the lake ... watch the deer'
The estate, on 2.7 acres, is in the northern hills of San Juan Capistrano.
OMAR NAZIF
A loggia with under-lit onyx countertops, a thatched palapa including a pizza oven, and a swimming pool with fire urns and a hidden waterslide give one of the largest homes on the market in San Juan Capistrano the feel of an island resort.
Set on 2.7 acres, the residence is in the Malaspina Ranch community in the citys northern hills. The 11,000-square foot, six-bedroom main house has venetian plaster walls, towering ceilings, two master suites, a home theater, and a formal office appointed in cherrywood, with coffered ceilings, a spiral staircase and loft.
The kitchen looks like something out of a showroom, with a massive island, La Cornue stove and Miele speed oven and speed steamer. The Sub-Zero refrigerator has a glass front.
A 2,500-square-foot guest house on the property boasts another distinct feature that kitchen has not merely a refrigerator, but a refrigerated room.
The estate at 30302 Malaspina Road, built in 2010, is on the market for $8.9 million.
Both the main and guest houses are covered by a solar power set-up that is owned, rather than leased, said the listing agent, Suzi Dailey of HOM Sothebys International Realty.
The estate has 19 flat-screen TVs, inside and out. The multilevel backyard includes a meditation area, an art barn for kids, trees growing apples, bananas, blueberries and figs, outdoor kitchens, and a firepit and seating area.

We each have our little everyday annoyances, things that, although repeatedly experienced, still drive us crazy. Whether its slang expressions, slow drivers or rude salespeople, pet peeves might be defined as slightly petty yet highly individualized, strong reactions to common daily occurrences.
As an interior decorator, I have some home styling pet peeves of my own. They include:
Neutral interiors: Although I can certainly appreciate the quiet beauty of tone-on-tone neutrals, I am referring to rooms in which there are no hints (let alone pops) of color. White, cream or beige walls are the perfect palette upon which to build an interesting room, but please do not fill the space with more brown, beige and cream accents. It is a safe move, but usually yields boring results. Infuse touches of your favorite colors throughout your living spaces.
Matching furniture sets: I once had a friend who needed her new living room furnished, so she went to a brand name store and bought the entire sample room, shelf accessories and all. I understand the desire to furnish a house quickly, but that is no reason to relocate a retail showroom into your home. Creating a new space includes the opportunity to add your favorite colors, collectibles and sense of style.
Wall art: too high, too low, too much, too little; hanging art perfectly requires planning, time and intention. Size, color, material and subject should be considered. More than the specific height, I think art should be hung relative to the things around it: large pieces on large walls, horizontal pieces above long things, and groupings with coordinated materials, for example.
A desk in the master bedroom: the epitome of bad feng shui, there is nothing good about falling asleep and waking up to a visual reminder of work: bills to be paid, papers to sign and documents to file. The guest room, hallway or kitchen corner are better places to relocate this functional yet usually stress-producing workspace.
Window sills: As I have said before, window sills are architectural features, not display areas. An occasional plant or the perfect decorative accent may be appropriate, but overall, I think window sills should be kept bare and clean, and windows accessible.
Mismatched towels: Sometimes bathroom towels are the only soft, clean items in the room, so it bothers me to see a collection of various colors thrown over the rods or hanging from hooks or the back of the door. Towels are a daily comfort and relatively inexpensive to buy. Make the commitment and buy a set of matching towels in various sizes, like a real grown-up.
Last but not least, Kleenex boxes! It always strikes me as a huge miss-step when allergy sufferers have boxes of tissues in every room, in a plethora of wild patterns and bright colors. I love that companies make them to match every possible color or decorating scheme, bit I am peeved that people cant take the time to pick a box that coordinates with their room. (By the way, one box per living space should suffice.)
Oh did anyone solicit my opinion?

Following ground breaking Sept. 17, a July 2015 completion is scheduled for the expansion of Karndean Design Flooring in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, which will double the current 35,000-square-foot building and add 38 new jobs over three years to the 69 currently employed there. Karndean, a United Kingdom-based floor covering company known for its vinyl product that can be manufactured to look and feel like marble, slate or wood, has been at its current location corner Pontiac and Randall courts in the Bushy Run Corporate Park since 2004 when it relocated from North Versailles. This is Karndean's U.S. corporate location. The state Department of Community and Economic Development provided a $75,000 grant, $17,100 for skills training and $76,000 in job-creation tax credits to the project which Landau Building Co. of McCandless is construction manager. Earlier this year the area was designated for a temporary tax-abatement program.
When the Salvation Army opened its new South Side store on Sept. 18, it brought 10 new jobs to the neighborhood. The store, which occupies 15,000 square feet at 855 E. Carson St., offers clothing, household items, books, toys, furniture and collectables. The location also accepts donations, and during after store hours, clothing donations can be made by placing them in bins in the parking lot. Tax receipts are provided donations during store hours.
Sota Construction Service, will seek approval Thursday from the Pittsburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment for a three-story 23-unit housing development at 2139 Wharton St., South Side. Ponte Vista Lofts LLC is the property owner. Also that day, two applicants will seek approval to establish clubs. Mixtape LLC wants to use a one-story structure at 4907 Penn Ave., Garfield, and Clarence E. Porter wants to use a one-story structure at 15 Wooster St., Middle Hill. New Grace Baptist Church wants to construct a one-story structure at 7711 Tioga St., Homewood South, for use as religious assembly with 12 parking spaces and Calvin and Pamela Sheffield seek approval for a rear addition to an existing funeral home at 225 Beltzhoover Ave., Allentown, for use as a crematorium.
The Economic Growth Connection of Westmoreland County has received a $430,000 Pennsylvania First grant to renovate and remediate the Mount Pleasant Glass Center. The funds will be used to eliminate lead and arsenic contamination found in three units within the Center, which when completed, will allow WATT Fuel Cell to enter the Center. WATT, a manufacturer of solid oxide fuel cell systems, has leased 24,000 square feet and will relocate from New York. It will create 33 new jobs over three years.
Three projects in Pittsburgh will share $2.3 million in state grants from the Commonwealth Finance Authority, State Rep. Jake Wheatley, D-Hill District, reports:
Almono LP will receive $400,000 toward construction of the 1.5 mile Signature Boulevard streetscape in the 178 acre development by the Regional Industrial Development Corp. of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The $6.05 million project includes a storm water system, installation of sidewalks to handicap standards, street lighting and directional signs for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.
Smithfield Oliver Partners LP (McKnight Realty and Millcraft Investments) will receive $1.1 million toward construction of the Smithfield Street Multimodal Transportation Center at the site of former Saks Fifth Avenue department store building, Downtown. The project includes construction of a 585-car parking garage, 60 bicycle parking spaces and an electric car charging station, sidewalk enhancements and improvements to the crosswalks surrounding the project site. Also, the project proposes to convert Oliver Avenue into a two-way street.
Three Crossings LP, will receive $800,000 toward building an intermodal transportation facility in the Strip District. Plans include 575 public and private parking spaces, 100 bicycle spaces, a bicycle repair station, electric vehicle charging stations, kayak storage and to accommodate a transit center for future development of the Green Boulevard transit line. Half of the parking spaces will be for the public and half for office workers and residents of the Yard, the 299-unit apartments planned by the developer, Oxford Development Co. The McCaffery Interests of Chicago will manage the apartments. The three-story 52,946-square-foot office building, which already has Rycon Construction leasing about 30,000 square feet, will be located at 2501 Smallman St. Ground breaking for both buildings is scheduled in October.

Terri Hibbard, director of Wings of Grace Relief Center, left, Alison Boutwell, Rebeccah York and Laine Norris, of Forest Lake Baptist Church's Young Married Couples Group, paint a railing as they volunteer at the Wings of Grace Relief Center next to Forest Lake Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.
Jennifer Jackson-Bolden has been dislocated from her Alberta home since the April 27, 2011, tornado felled two trees onto her house. Unable to afford to live somewhere else because she was paying a mortgage on a house she couldn't live in, Jackson-Bolden has lived in multiple places since then. Saturday, she was one step closer to getting her home back.
Screams from saws filled the air as a group of people worked at her house Saturday, tacking up siding, painting trim and laying floors.
Jackson-Bolden's home was one of more than 70 projects volunteers worked to complete Saturday as part of the first Day of Hope, a volunteer service day where people around the community work on cleanup, restoration and maintenance projects at homes and facilities in need throughout Tuscaloosa County.
I was just reaching out to anybody that could help me. This was not something planned. It was something wanted, Jackson-Bolden said. I didn't know it would happen. I just prayed it would happen.
A Day of Hope is a spin-off project of the Hope Initiative created by Mayor Walt Maddox in 2009 as a partnership between the city of Tuscaloosa and the faith community. The initiative's focus is making short-term and long-term improvements in crime-ridden areas in the county.
The Day of Hope is just a way to rebuild Tuscaloosa in areas that are in need of help, said Linlee Karn, coordinator of the event.
Karn said the Hope Initiative plans to do a similar event every year.
Members of more than
50 churches of varying denominations participated in service projects Saturday.
